ChatGPT and AI technologies present novel and unforeseen challenges to the academic community, ushering in an intriguing era where the distinction between plagiarism and academic integrity can become less clear for many students. In response, the Cal State LA University Library created three new digital initiatives published on traditional and social media teaching platforms to help students understand how to avoid plagiarism and their use of ChatGPT in higher education. In the fall of 2023, librarians developed a new module focused on ChatGPT in higher education. The module enhanced the existing “Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism” self-paced Canvas student tutorial, which …

Supporting Text And Data Analysis Across Campus From The Academic Library, Amy Kirchhoff, Hejin Shin Phd

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The ability to comprehend and communicate with text-based data is essential to future success in academics and employment, as evidenced in a recent survey from Bloomberg Research Services which shows that nearly 97% of survey respondents now use data analytics in their companies and 58% consider data and text mining a business analytics tool (https://www.sas.com/content/dam/SAS/bp_de/doc/studie/ba-st-the-current-state-of-business-analytics-2317022.pdf). This has fueled a substantial growth in text analysis research (involving the use of technology to analyze un- and semi-structured text data for valuable insights, trends, and patterns) across disciplines and a corresponding demand on academic libraries to support text analysis pedagogy and text analysis …

Federal Reserve Bank Of Chicago Circulars: A Case Study Of An Early Career Librarian’S Approach To A Full-Scale Digitization Project, Delaney Mccoy

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Each Federal Reserve Bank distributes circulars to their member banks which contain information regarding bank supervision and regulation, services, policies, and district relations. The early circulars of a Reserve Bank, those issued after the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 and before the general regulation of the twelve Reserve Banks through the Banking Act of 1935, illuminate the idiosyncratic nature of the policies and procedures of each district.

In the summer of 2023, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago sent their circulars from the years 1914 to 1979 to the Digital History and Archives team at the Federal Reserve Bank of …

Effect Of Instruction Language On English-Spanish Bilinguals’ Speech Perception, Alexa Andrade, Laura M. Getz Phd

Research Month

Abstract: Compared to monolinguals, bilinguals have an advantage in faster reaction times during task switching (Hernández et al., 2013). However, it is not known how switching task language affects basic perception of speech sounds. The goal of this project was to determine whether Spanish-English bilingual participants respond to auditory stimuli differently based on the language in which they receive task instructions. Participants were randomly given experiment instructions in English or Spanish, and then were presented with minimal pairs of words varying in voice onset time (VOT) along a continuum (e.g., belly/peli). Both endpoints of the stimuli were words in Spanish, …

From Paywalls To Public Works: Information Policy Infrastructure For More Inclusive And Impactful Scholarship, Will Cross

Digital Initiatives Symposium

As the academy is increasingly invested in making scholarship open, many practitioners have focused on open licensing as the defining legal mechanism for openness. While licenses are critical for removing many barriers of cost, open scholarship requires much more in order to meet its mission as ethical, inclusive, and impactful. Open and public scholarship requires intentional design for public engagement that leverages the full suite of permissions, exceptions, and limitations built into the law. In this session we will explore the legal and policy tools available to scholars and the opportunities they create to build a system of scholarly communication …

Stepping Back To Move Toward A More Equitable Future For Digital Library Users And Workers, Jennifer Ferretti Apr 2022

Stepping Back To Move Toward A More Equitable Future For Digital Library Users And Workers, Jennifer Ferretti

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Libraries were actively set up to be inhospitable to racialized individuals including barring them from physical buildings, structuring rules and systems to value and uphold whiteness, and evidenced by the lack of racialized individuals in the library profession. Digital libraries, while comparatively newer, suffer from the legacy of these structural inequities and the same lopsided demographics. We need to take a step back and examine these legacies so that this avenue of library work has a chance to become more equitable. This discussion on examining the profession with race and power embedded is relevant for anyone in the profession whether …

Closing Keynote: Academy-Owned Non-Profit Open Access Publishing: An Approach To Achieve Participatory And Sustainable Scholarly Communications, Arianna Becerril García

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The prevailing science communication system has showed little success in making science a global, participatory and equitable conversation. At the same time, a very robust ecosystem of science communication has been built in the Latin-American region, one that is intrinsically open, non-commercial and academy-owned. However, this “regional” approach has remained outside the legitimated channels of scholarly communication.

AmeliCA’s and Redalyc’s approach is based on the fact that scholarly communication in control of the academy is a strategy much healthier and sustainable for the development of science and society. Why is it that commercial publishers are a pivotal actor in science …

What If We Get Open Access?: A New Case For Undergraduate Scientific Literacy, Aj Boston

Digital Initiatives Symposium

For the educators among us who care about the Open Access Movement, are we prepared for what comes in a post-OA world? Suppose that Plan-S (or another initiative with similar objectives) succeeds in making vast quantities of previously paywalled scientific literature openly available to anyone with an Internet connection.

On one hand, it's the utopia we've fought for: our best ideas, set free to circulate among the minds who will incorporate them toward solving the big issues humanity faces. On the other hand, what if scientific literature becomes weaponized in the same way that journalism has in recent years, where …
