University of Arkansas Libraries implemented a new library system, OneSearch, that became fully operational in July 2022. In the planning for this transition, collaboration among colleagues outside the committee and preliminary user-feedback became necessary as decisions were finalized. Participants were requested to perform searches on several material types, narrow or broaden their retrieval, and provide general observations. This poster provides information and analysis of the feedback gathered.

a. The impact of students’ use of technology for extracurricular purposes during instruction sessions and its effects on their learning and retention of information.

This poster presentation highlights successful planning that has allowed a special collections without dedicated classrooms or galleries to utilize limited exhibit spaces in the reading room for rotating and long-term exhibits that align with library-wide initiatives while also focusing student and visitor attention on curatorial strengths, cross-disciplinary opportunities, emerging research trends, and hidden collections.

Making a connection between digital repositories and library catalogues is an issue many libraries and archives face, especially when dealing with items that traditionally received full cataloguing records. This paper explores different workflows for reusing metadata to create catalogue records, connecting the two resources together. This contributed paper details a project involving the creation of a mobile instruction ‘classroom in a box’, which consisted of twelve iPads, a laptop and a charging cart. What went well, what was changed, some recommendations, and how the tablets have been most commonly used, in a competitive exposure to library resources called Library Rally in the first year Communication and English classes, are covered.

Embracing Geek Culture In Undergraduate Library Instruction: The Til Subreddit For Resource Evaluation And Qualitative Assessment, Michelle Gibeault

A case study of a library instruction teaching experiment using the “Today I Learned” forum on the website reddit.com, this article addresses teaching and assessment methods intended to promote self-monitoring in both the library instructor and student. After experimenting in the context of one-shot, lower-division, library instruction sessions, the TIL structure demonstrated strong opportunities for (a) eliciting declarative feedback from students about what they learn in library instruction sessions, (b) discussing how appropriate resource selection can effectively support a claim, and (c) modeling behaviors of lifelong learning while introducing unfamiliar students to an online forum founded in that spirit.

Using Ipads To Facilitate Library Instruction Sessions In A Scale-Up Classroom, Michelle Gibeault

This study details a trial in which three undergraduate library instruction sessions were conducted on a class set of iPads, within a SCALE-UP classroom. The iPads suggested strong potential as replacements for desktop computers and demonstrated support for key active learning approaches: instant polling, content sharing, and navigation of web pages and databases. The SCALE-UP classroom has made notable contributions in promoting undergraduate learning, and its advantages were found to be extensible to library instruction. The pedagogy which the space is designed to reinforce, collaborative learning segments interspersed with lecture components, seemed to promote student engagement in library instruction sessions.
