Researching Organisational Change And Learning: A Narrative Approach, Carl Rhodes Dec 1996

Researching Organisational Change And Learning: A Narrative Approach, Carl Rhodes

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores a qualitative research approach to organisational change and learning based on the gathering and reporting of stories. Particular emphasis is placed on reporting research findings in the "voices" of the organisational actors involved in the research. The paper starts by identifying learning, socialisation and diversity as a context for research and goes on to examine the power relations implicit in organisational learning. A pluralistic approach to the use of storytelling in organisational analysis is discussed and a research process is described. Issues of how research findings are represented are examined as are some unresolved and potentially unresolvable …

The Creation Of Theory: A Recent Application Of The Grounded Theory Method, Naresh R. Pandit Dec 1996

The Creation Of Theory: A Recent Application Of The Grounded Theory Method, Naresh R. Pandit

The Qualitative Report

This paper outlines a particular approach to building theory that was employed in a recent doctoral research project (Pandit, 1995). Three aspects used in conjunction indicate the project's novelty: firstly, the systematic and rigorous application of the grounded theory method; secondly, the use of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data; and, thirdly, the use of a qualitative data analysis software package to aid the process of grounded theory building.

In Search Of A Dissertation Committee:Using A Qualitative Research Approach To Study A Lived Experience, Laurie L. Hernandez Dec 1996

In Search Of A Dissertation Committee:Using A Qualitative Research Approach To Study A Lived Experience, Laurie L. Hernandez

The Qualitative Report

This paper tells a personal story of one student's experience. I am a doctoral candidate and qualitative researcher in a Family Therapy program located in South Florida. In this project, I discuss how I took a qualitative research posture toward the making of an important decision in my life, and in my academic career: Choosing a dissertation committee. The paper is a narrative of how I went about using qualitative research methods and sociological introspection (Ellis, 1991) to "study" my way through the process of this unique experience.

Representative Research: A Qualitatively Driven Approach, Mark P. Combs Dec 1995

Representative Research: A Qualitatively Driven Approach, Mark P. Combs

The Qualitative Report

Research methodologies represent complex sociohistorical evolutions within the social sciences ranging from reductionist to reflexive sensibilities (Tuchman, 1994). These inquiries each emphasize dissimilar variations of data analysis as found in their subsequent conclusions obtained from and during the research process. Unlike quantitative methodology with its explicit formulaic constructions, qualitative research includes a veritable cornucopia of methodologies, paradigms and methods. This paper briefly reviews those experiences encountered and processes which unfolded during a pilot project for a research class. Although Miller and Crabtree (1992) proposed a research roadmap with associated typologies within qualitative research, this paper focuses on the process of …

Semiotics And Qualitative Research In Education: The Third Crossroad, Gary Shank Dec 1995

Semiotics And Qualitative Research In Education: The Third Crossroad, Gary Shank

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, I would like to show how qualitative research in education and semiotics can be brought together for the benefit of each field. Starting with attempts to define both qualitative research and semiotics in ways that can inform both disciplines, I hope to accomplish this task by mapping a series of three crossroads that define the past, present, and hopefully the future of the field.

Presenting Qualitative Data, Ronald J. Chenail Dec 1995

Presenting Qualitative Data, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

After all the data have been collected and the analysis has been completed, the next major task for qualitative researchers is to re-present the study in the form of a paper or a lecture. The challenge of converting mounds of data and analysis can be quite overwhelming even for the experienced researcher. To help you with your efforts at presenting qualitative research in your papers and in your talks, I ask you to consider the following ideas: Openness, Data as Star, Juxtaposition, and Data Presentation Strategies.

A Pragmatic View Of Thematic Analysis, Jodi Aronson Apr 1995

A Pragmatic View Of Thematic Analysis, Jodi Aronson

The Qualitative Report

Ethnographic interviews have become a commonly used qualitat ive methodology for collecting data (Aronson, 1992). Once the information is gathered, res earchers are faced with the decision on how to analyze the data. There are many ways to anal yze informants' talk about their experiences (Mahrer, 1988; Spradley, 1979; Taylor & Bogdan, 1984), a nd thematic analysis is one such way. Although thematic analysis has been described (Benner, 1985; Leininger, 1985; Taylor & Board, 1984), there is insufficient literature that outlines the pragmatic process of thematic analysis. This article attempts to outline the procedure for perform ing a thematic analysis.

In Pursuit Of Aesthetic Research Provocations, Barbara A. Kaufman Sep 1992

In Pursuit Of Aesthetic Research Provocations, Barbara A. Kaufman

The Qualitative Report

In keeping with new narrative metaphors in the family therapy field and new epistemological approaches to clinical interaction, literature as a paradigm for qualitative inquiry and evaluation is discussed. Description of a research project that explores how fictional literature can be integrated into graduate programs reveals a multi-layered, aesthetic approach to family therapy research and training as well as the design of project-specific methodology (Chenail, 1992a).

A Case For Clinical Qualitative Research*, Ronald J. Chenail Sep 1992

A Case For Clinical Qualitative Research*, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

For the most part, that which is called qualitative research has been developed, understood, and justified within scientific and quantitative contexts. Sharing common interests (e.g., description, interpretation, criticism, subjectivity, etc.) with this scientific qualitative research are two contrasting traditions of research and practice, which have originated and evolved in domains of inquiry other than science and technology, namely those methods and ways of knowing from the arts and humanities, and from the clinical fields. This latter type, clinical qualitative or practitioner-generated research, is defined and contrasted with the scientific and artistic varieties. A number of clinical qualitative research projects are …

When Research Interviews Are More Therapeutic Than Therapy Interviews, Jerry Gale Sep 1992

When Research Interviews Are More Therapeutic Than Therapy Interviews, Jerry Gale

The Qualitative Report

This brief report presents some preliminary results of part of a study currently being conducted (Gale, 1992, May). The study is a qualitative analysis of a couple's and therapist's perspective of meaningful moments in therapy using Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) (Elliott, 1986). The methodology of this study involved the collaborators (aka: subjects) in a manner that was self-reflexive and recursive (see Steier, in press). The impact of the study was such that the research interviews themselves were reported to have greater therapeutic impact than the therapy. Following eight sessions of marital therapy, the couple reported that therapy was not helpful, …

Qualitative Research: Central Tendencies And Ranges, Ronald J. Chenail Sep 1992

Qualitative Research: Central Tendencies And Ranges, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

It is always interesting to listen closely when someone says, "Qualitative research is..." or curious to read intently an article or book which prominently features "qualitative research" in the title, and then experience a strange, defamiliarization process as the words of the conversation, lecture, article, or book don't seem to fit your notion of what "qualitative research" is and isn't. Well, you are not alone in your confusion. As far as I know, no one has copy rights on the term so it ends up meaning a variety of things for a variety of people. As a matter of fact, …
