Students are in final paper-writing mode - and this often means researching to find the best sources with which they can engage. While library instruction sessions often help with general overviews of resources, there are so many more tools and strategies that most students (and staff/faculty) don’t discover.
In this month’s newsletter, we’ll highlight a couple of the ones that the librarians really like using. Try them out, and come tell us about your own search tips and tricks!

Libraries are full of stuff including everything from books to study rooms. Access Services is the group that oversees all of the stuff and the space it inhabits. Access Services staff make sure the books are in good order on the shelves, that signage throughout the building gets you where you need to go, they make the checkout process work for our materials and for the things we get for you from other libraries.

Dean's Preface: The semester is underway! Roy O. West Library has reopened and students are finding their place(s) to study, read, and write. It's been fun to see them tucked in every nook and to help several find books on the shelves. While library services remained available, with alteration, during the pandemic and renovation, it is clear how much we all missed the main campus library. This issue highlights our library instruction program and the ways we help students learn to use the many resources and services the libraries provide. We are excited to bring classes into the library (Roy …

Once housed in a single room with materials shelved all the way to the ceiling, DePauw's Music Library is a beautiful two story space with spectacular views (particularly in the fall) of campus. While the space is nice, it's the collections and services provided by Sylvia Yang, Music & Performing Arts Librarian, that make DePauw's music library one of the best.

Like everything else, the reference desk and the way we provide service at it has changed. What hasn’t changed is the need for assistance with difficult information seeking tasks. Libraries receive fewer questions in the background information area (e.g. dates, places) these days but spend time on more complex research questions. DePauw Libraries seek to meet the needs of researchers by staffing the research desk with trained students and making librarians readily available for one-on-one collaboration.

August 2022 Dean's Preface:
One of our most necessary research resources has, in my opinion, the worst name. Database. We subscribe (usually via an annual subscription or an occasional one time purchase) to nearly 200 and despite our best efforts there seems to be no better name for these powerful boxes of information!
Library databases include an increasing range of content from Articles and Images to Videos and Zeitungen and the library website provides a couple of pathways to search for and access this content. Our Databases A-Z list provides direct access to each database which allows you to search …
