Influences Of Cultural Similarities And Differences On Coworker Relationships And Perceived Levels Of Workplace Psychological Stress, Natalie Hidaka

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

One of the most important environments for many adults is the workplace, and we increasingly find co-workers with a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. Different cultural backgrounds must communicate and collaborate for an effective team to meet the common goal for a workplace. However, different cultural values and practices in one place often create misunderstandings and fraught challenges. One of the significant differences in culture is how people interact socially and their primary motivation when interacting with others. When independent and interdependent cultural backgrounds are considered, it is suggested that interdependent cultures tend to focus on relationship-preserving while independent cultures …

The Fear Of Missing Out Phenomenon On Belongingness In Secondary Students, Minnie Mcbride

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

The popularity of social media use by teens has come into question with the 2013 discovery of a phenomenon called the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). FOMO is defined as “a pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent” (Przybylski, Murayama, DeHaan, & Gladwell, 2013). According to the literature, FOMO can impact learning, health, and safety. The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine how FOMO on social media impacts students of color at one independent secondary school in Northern California. The researcher conducted personal interviews with six students of color in grades …

Corporate Social Responsibility And Minor League Baseball: The Pacific Association, Rachel Blackman Apr 2019

Corporate Social Responsibility And Minor League Baseball: The Pacific Association, Rachel Blackman

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Attendance at all levels of baseball is the lowest it has been in 15 years (Kessler, 2018). And with decreasing levels of and social capital, communities are losing trust and civic engagement (Putnam, 2000). Sports teams foster higher levels of trust within their communities (Walker & Kent, 2009). Corporate Social Responsibility provides a way to foster this trust through activities led by sports teams in a community. This includes players visiting schools, libraries, or hosting camps and clinics. This makes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) much more effective with the inclusion of sports teams (Walker & Kent, 2009). Previous studies addressed …

Coolhunting: Marketing Tools & Techniques, Lillian Fuhrman Apr 2017

Coolhunting: Marketing Tools & Techniques, Lillian Fuhrman

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Technology and the rise of mass media has made marketing and connecting with consumers more valuable than ever before. In order to reach consumers, many companies have employed coolhunters to predict trends, identify key influencers, and translate what they observe within subcultures into a tangible product. Coolhunters are individuals that observe different aspects of society, such as fashion, and use what they see to outline what is up and coming in terms of products, ideologies, and attitudes. These trend observations can then be used by companies in a multitude of ways; to develop products, to guide brand expansion, to develop …

The Phenomenon Of Teacher Burnout: Mitigating Its Influence On New Teachers, Kaila Sanford

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Teacher burnout is a well-known and researched field. It has been documented in the literature that teachers experience high levels of stress and emotional exhaustion, which leads to high levels of burnout and professional attrition. This study examined the incidence of burnout in new elementary school teachers and makes recommendations for changes to organizational structure that may reduce professional burnout.

High School Student Concussion Recovery Program: Teacher Involvement In Student Academic Transitions To Classroom And To Sports, Brittany Diego

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Many symptoms of concussions can greatly interfere with the cognitive abilities and skills students use in school. Although students may have similar symptoms, they experience concussions differently. Students returning to the classroom from a concussion often have different needs and abilities.

Research shows that a formal, individualized protocol to treat suspected concussions, both academically and physically, is vital to the successful recovery of each student. Much research is available on concussions for professional athletes, specifically related to recovery and returning to their sport. However, there is little research about high school students regarding concussions. Concussion recovery programs for high school …

The Power Of The Student In University Crisis Management Policy Development, Drew Reid Apr 2017

The Power Of The Student In University Crisis Management Policy Development, Drew Reid

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

There are many forms of policy that University administrators create; a main portion of which addresses crises such as sexual assault violations, school shootings and suicide. The federal government has a role in the development of policy, which Title IX and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) demonstrate. Crisis Management Teams (CMT’s), comprised of teachers, administrators, and other university faculty are committees who, on behalf of the university, implement the policies written by the government. Where the issue occurs is the lack of student involvement on these committees. Why are the people who the policy is written for …

Given the similarities between Stalin and Putin one may lead to speculate that the former is a strong influence on the latter. Stalin has become a major influence in the manner in which Putin developed his leadership style. By adapting Stalin like tactics, Putin developed characteristics that have been manifested in the manner in which he leads Russia in the present today. The focus specifically is on how their governing styles …

The Domestic Conditions And Influence Of U.S. Foreign Policy On Guatemalan Emigration., Monica Spohn Apr 2017

The Domestic Conditions And Influence Of U.S. Foreign Policy On Guatemalan Emigration., Monica Spohn

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Guatemalan emigration to the U.S. is largely motivated by domestic conditions including corruption, impunity, land rights, drug gangs and the 2008 economic recession. Guatemala’s living conditions and development trajectory interact with past and current American policy to the detriment of the population in poverty. Some Washington policies favor development in Guatemala (e.g., USAID funded projects) but others such as the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), anti-drug, and immigration policies may unintentionally hinder development and encourage emigration. Scholars identify economics, ethnic inequality and weak government as motivating people to leave Guatemala, but it is unclear how Washington’s policies might interact …

The Effects Of Gender, Age, And Duration On Motivations To Exercise, Kimberly Murrietta Apr 2017

The Effects Of Gender, Age, And Duration On Motivations To Exercise, Kimberly Murrietta

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

There are a variety of factors that motivate people to engage in physical exercise. The Self-Determination Theory identifies and categorizes the main reasons that people usually give when asked to explain why they exercise (Markland et al., 2014). Some of these factors are experienced as autonomous, meaning that people are independently driven to exercise. Other factors are controlled forms of motivation, causing people to exercise with the means of attaining some sort of outcome other than internal satisfaction. In order to measure and compare the extent to which individuals are motivated to exercise, this study required participants to fill out …

Is It Cheating?: Examining Parenting Styles And Attitudes Towards Infidelity, Ica Cabral Apr 2017

Is It Cheating?: Examining Parenting Styles And Attitudes Towards Infidelity, Ica Cabral

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

As one enters adolescence and emerging adulthood, the attitudes and identity formed by our earliest relationships come to the forefront. During this developmental stage, the attitudes and beliefs that we have internalized based on the relationships we observed in our early life may contribute to the health of a relationship. Successful maintenance of a monogamous relationship may be impacted by the behaviors and attitudes we have internalized from our earliest relationships.

Attitudes toward infidelity may be one such inheritance from our caregivers. Past studies suggest that attitudes toward infidelity are linked to both intentions to cheat, and cheating behaviors (Jackman, …

The 1930s Repatriation Of Mexican And Mexican-Americans May Have Similar Consequences With The New Donald Trump Administration, Erika Rosales-Shelfo Apr 2017

The 1930s Repatriation Of Mexican And Mexican-Americans May Have Similar Consequences With The New Donald Trump Administration, Erika Rosales-Shelfo

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

In the early 1930s, government officials from the local, state and federal level of the United States deported up to half a million Mexican and Mexican-Americans. How did government officials justify these repatriations? Beginning with the onset of the Great Depression, these deportations were designed to provide employment to out-of-work whites and to free up resources being spent on unemployed people of Mexican descent. Some of the deportees were Mexican citizens, and others were American citizens of Mexican heritage. Regardless of citizenship, many repatriados experienced similar adversities in the forced journey to Mexico and trying to integrate into the Mexican …

Examining The Relationship Between Hawaiian Cultural Practices And Moral Development, Christina Rezentes Apr 2017

Examining The Relationship Between Hawaiian Cultural Practices And Moral Development, Christina Rezentes

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Both cultural engagement and moral development are essential elements of human development. Moral development plays a key role in human development because it is how a person learns the rules within a community, starting with self and family, and then extending to a larger society. Our exposure to morality begins with our interactions with our family and culture of origin. Cultural engagement, for the purposes of this study, I have defined as “active participation in the cultural practices of, identification with, and loyalty to, the indigenous society of one’s birth or adopted homeland.” Cultural engagement has been found to be …

Opinion Of Homosexuality In Relation To Preferred News Outlet, Kathleen K. Wortham Apr 2016

Opinion Of Homosexuality In Relation To Preferred News Outlet, Kathleen K. Wortham

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

America is rapidly becoming more accepting of homosexuality. This is not only seen by more public acceptance of gay people in media, but also according to a PEW Research study conducted this year, the majority of Americans now support gay marriage (PEW Research Center, 2015). It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what factors have contributed to this change in perception despite numerous studies. Past research has found that traditional media outlets including television and magazines, among other outlets, does not significantly influence opinions of homosexuality (Becker & Scheufele, 2011). The purpose of the present study is to determine if there …

Intersectional Feminism And The Latino Man, Donovan E. Hernandez Garcia Apr 2016

Intersectional Feminism And The Latino Man, Donovan E. Hernandez Garcia

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Various groups of people exist, each with their own religions, cultures, and practices that show the ingenuity of humanity. Yet, because of major events throughout human history, such as colonization, a certain societal structure was created to maintain power. Due to colonization, the prolonged exposure to numerous cultures, and the continuation of oppressive systems, people have been forced to band together based on characteristics similar to theirs, be it race, gender, or sexual orientation, creating divisions within society. It is because of such colonial mentality, subliminal and apparent, political and cultural movements, such as Feminism, have been created to combat …

The Power Of A Secret: Ireland’S Secret Societies Involvement In Irish Nationalism, Sierra M. Harlan Apr 2016

The Power Of A Secret: Ireland’S Secret Societies Involvement In Irish Nationalism, Sierra M. Harlan

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

The Irish Republican Brotherhood (I.R.B.) and the Irish Volunteer Force (I.V.F.) altered Irish Nationalist tactics from Parliamentary supported Home Rule to a republican movement for Irish Independence. The actions of these secret societies between the years of 1900 through 1917, before the Irish Revolutionary period,[1] are the reason that Ireland gained independence from United Kingdom in 1921. The change from political negotiations by the ineffective Irish Parliamentary Party to the republican movement would never have happened without the Easter Rising of 1916. The centennial anniversary of this Easter Rising makes The Power of a Secret: Ireland’s secret societies involvement …

Gender Differences In The Attitudes Towards The Homeless, Brittney Lee Biagi Apr 2016

Gender Differences In The Attitudes Towards The Homeless, Brittney Lee Biagi

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Differences between male and female attitudes towards the homeless There are many negative stigmas of the homeless. For example, it is a negative stigma that most homeless people are misusing drugs. Attitudes towards the homeless population can be influenced by these negative stigmas. There has been little research conducted on the public’s perception of the homeless and even less research done on the differences between male and female attitudes. In past research, researchers have noticed gender differences even when they did not seek them out. They found that female respondents demonstrated attitudes that were more sympathetic than males towards the …

People Outlook On Life, Aundray T. Rogers Apr 2016

People Outlook On Life, Aundray T. Rogers

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Attending college can be challenging for students and even more for veterans returning from deployments on military duty. When returning to college, student veterans’ psychological well being and outlook on life may make them feel uneasy. College professors and administrators need to understand that this special population has different needs than that of traditional college students. It has been found that student veterans report feeling alienated compared to other college students due to their military service, but this could be improved with seminars to educate the general public (Rumann, Rivera, & Hernandez, 2011). The purpose of the present study is …

Fear Of Missing Out In Relationship To Emotional Stability And Social Media Use, Jacqueline N. Germaine-Bewley

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

The purpose of social media is to share information and connect with other users online. In recent years, extensive social media use has begun to emerge among users and can be related to increased time on social media outlets. Increased time on social media platforms has raised concern about a new phenomenon called the Fear of Missing out (FoMO; Przybylski, Murayamab, DeHaanc, and Gladwelld, 2013). FoMO is defined by an individual’s anxiety or worry that other people are having more rewarding experiences than they are. FoMO is characterized by an increased desire to constantly stay connected with online friends on …

Movies With Meaning: Crossing Disciplines In Cinema, Ashley Cotter Apr 2016

Movies With Meaning: Crossing Disciplines In Cinema, Ashley Cotter

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

One might not realize that blockbuster movies can be used as an educational tool in the classroom setting to enhance the learning process. While these types of movies are not crafted as pedagogical tools, like animated, demonstrative video clips, there is educational value to be found in them. In more recent years, this is a practice that has been used in many classrooms. However, it is within the social sciences primarily that these blockbuster films are used to augment the understanding of concepts. Big films are rarely, if ever, used in the hard sciences to provide examples of concepts. How …

The 2016 Presidential Primary Election: The Issue Of Higher Education, Crisha C. Carlos Apr 2016

The 2016 Presidential Primary Election: The Issue Of Higher Education, Crisha C. Carlos

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

National student loan debt reached $1.2 trillion in 2015. With forty million Americans carrying an average student loan debt of $27,000, many are demanding change to the current system, and are looking to the 2016 Democratic and Republican presidential primary candidates for a solution. When candidates campaign for office they address many public policy issues in their speeches and frame these issues in particular ways to attract support. How do the 2016 Democratic and Republican presidential primary candidates frame the issues of higher education and student debt? Using content analysis to analyze candidate websites and speeches, this study found that …

Terrorist Black Holes: The Case Of Northern Ireland, Melissa Divens Apr 2015

Terrorist Black Holes: The Case Of Northern Ireland, Melissa Divens

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

What factors within a region contribute to the host of a terrorist group? Rem Korteweg and David Ehrhardt begin to answer that question with the publishing of what they call “a first step in research aimed at uncovering terrorist sanctuaries”. Terrorist Black Holes: A Study into Terrorist Sanctuaries and Governmental Weakness (2005), identifies the concept of a Terrorist Black Hole, which is an area within a region that houses a terrorist group. While Korteweg concentrates on regions outside of NATO territory, I challenge his assumption for the absence of Terrorist Black Holes in the West by asking: What are the …

Self-Esteem Issues In Facebook Users, Derry E. Gutierrez Apr 2015

Self-Esteem Issues In Facebook Users, Derry E. Gutierrez

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Social networking sites (SNS) like Facebook provide several social comparison opportunities. College students use several methods of social media to communicate and stay in touch with friends and family around the world. Although Facebook allows its users to post pictures, plan social events, meet new people, sustain relationships, and observe others’ lives, it also traps its users into a world where they (consciously and unconsciously) compare their lives to those of others. Facebook users self-evaluate and self-enhance their lives by socially comparing themselves with the detailed information they receive from other users. This frequent comparison indicates that social network sites …

The Rise Of Adhd And Effects Of Alternative Treatment In Adolescents, Jennifer Villarina Apr 2015

The Rise Of Adhd And Effects Of Alternative Treatment In Adolescents, Jennifer Villarina

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a syndrome that makes it difficult for people to focus, control behavior and regulate activity. Many with ADHD move constantly and are impulsive. They cannot seem to follow directions and are easily bored or frustrated with tasks. Although these behaviors are normally observed in children, they are more severe in those with ADHD. The symptoms of ADHD make it difficult for children to function at school and home. Exposure to toxins, injury to the brain and imbalance of neurotransmitters can affect the development of the brain (LeFever, Arcona & Antonuccio, 2003). The most common …
