Freshmen at Singapore Management University are required to attend library orientation in person before their first term. Traditional workshops were replaced in 2012 by LibQuest, a problem-based activity which received positive feedback from students.

However, due to increasing sizes of each freshmen cohort, we started considering alternatives which were more scalable and sustainable.

In 2015, we collaborated with a student team from the School of Information Systems on a Proof of Concept: a mobile app that allows on-demand library orientation.

In the app, users are tasked to capture “monsters” scattered throughout the library. The app alerts users if there are …

Serials Renewal Cycle: Doing It The Smu (A Different U) Way!, Kai Leong Heng

Research Collection Library

Academic libraries typically renew their serials subscriptions (Individual print and/or online titles) annually by comparing prices, availability and service terms proposed by different subscription agents. In Singapore (and possibly other countries in the region), we have only up to 3 (active and competing) subscription agents to choose from. At Singapore Management University (SMU), the library maintains about 500 serials titles. The “legacy” practice had been to split the order between the two of larger agents and designate a staff each to take charge of related operational matters. This session will present a different approach in the serials renewal cycle which …

The competitive environment in which university libraries operate and provide their services and resources is one of the biggest challenges to engage today’s undergraduate students. There is a limited amount of high quality attention and time students have, to be able to be engaged with what the library offers them. Planning and designing library awareness and information literacy programs, particularly for new students, has presented itself as an on-going challenge for librarians worldwide in recent times. However, the goalpost keeps on moving and the players are becoming more restless, demanding and seeking instant gratification. The purpose of this paper is …
