Ubiquitäres Computing (UbiComp) bezeichnet eine alles durchdringende Informatisierung und Ver- netzung u.a. auch im Arbeitsleben. Es fügt sich in der industriellen Fertigung in die seit langem zu beobachtenden Trends der Rationalisierung und Flexibilisierung ein, beschleunigen diese und ver- stärken zum Teil deren Auswirkungen auf innerbetriebliche Prozesse. Mit Blick auf Tätigkeitsprofile und Qualifikationsanforderungen sind zwei gegenläufigen Folgen von UbiComp zu erwarten: Einer- seits werden bestimmte Tätigkeiten in der industriellen Fertigung eine qualitative Anreicherung und Erweiterung erfahren, während andererseits erweiterte Möglichkeiten zur Automatisierung von einfa- chen Kontroll-, Überwachungs- und anderen manuellen Tätigkeiten bestehen. The success of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) will depend on how secure it can be made, how privacy and other rights of indi- viduals can be protected and how individuals can come to trust the intelligent world that surrounds them and through which they move. This article addresses these issues by analysing scenarios for ambient intelligence applications that have been developed over the last few years. It elaborates the assumptions that promotors make about the likely use of the technology and possibly unwanted side effects. It concludes with a number of threats for personal privacy that become evident.

Im Oktober 2000 hat die Europäische Kommission eine Sondierung zur Patentier-barkeit software-bezogener Erfindungen eingeleitet. Gegenwärtig beraten die Mit-gliedstaaten des Europäischen Patentübereinkommens beim Europäischen Patent-amt darüber, ob die diesbezüglichen Einschränkung für die Patentierung aus dem Patentübereinkommen gestrichen werden soll. Hintergrund dieser Diskussionen ist die Befürchtung, dass das Fehlen EU-weit einheitlicher Rechtsvorschriften die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und das Wirtschaftswachstum der Europäischen Union hemmen könnte [4, 5]. Auch der im Frühjahr 2002 vorgelegte Richtlinienvorschlag der Europäischen Kommission wird kontrovers debattiert; eine Lösung die den In-teressen aller betroffenen Akteure berücksichtigt scheint auch heute noch in weiter Ferne zu sein [8].

The importance of information and communication technologies in everyday life is increasing strongly. The growing penetration of PCs in households and offices and the almost ubiquitous use of mobile communication devices are vivid examples for this development.

Personal Computer sind aus der heutigen Arbeitswelt nicht wegzudenken und haben längst ihren festen Platz als privates Kommunikationsmedium. Die historische Analyse zeigt, dass die Ent-wicklung des interaktiven Computers von 1945 bis 1985 nicht zielgerichtet erfolgte. Der heu- tige Stand der Technik ist vielmehr Schlusspunkt einer eher zufälligen Folge lokaler Gegebenhei- ten und Umstände.
