Beyond Litigation : The Behavior Of Cause Lawyering Organizations In The Lgbtq Movement, David Lawrence Trowbridge Jan 2018

Beyond Litigation : The Behavior Of Cause Lawyering Organizations In The Lgbtq Movement, David Lawrence Trowbridge

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Scholarship tells us that cause lawyers, including those in the LGBTQ movement, are likely to avoid non-litigation tactics in favor of court-centered strategies (Klarman 2005; Rosenberg 2008; Scheingold 1974). Other research suggests that lawyers are likely to steer the LGBTQ movement’s agenda away from both grassroots interests and its more radical agenda (Leachman 2014; Levitsky 2006). However, more recent scholarship shows an increased reliance on non-litigation tactics in the LGBTQ movement and publicly available evidence indicates cause lawyers are working on diverse sets of issues within the movement (Cummings and NeJaime 2010; Marshall 2006).

Social Control, Family Structure, And Juvenile Delinquency In Fragile Families, Alison Van Glad Jan 2018

Social Control, Family Structure, And Juvenile Delinquency In Fragile Families, Alison Van Glad

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Families come in many different structures and sizes, therefore; it is critical to examine how families impact children. Empirical research has shown that a child’s upbringing has the potential to influence delinquent behavior. However, existing literature using Fragile Families has not tested this association at the most recent wave. This thesis examines the relationship between family structure, relationships with parents, conventional beliefs, parental incarceration and juvenile delinquency at age 15 using Hirschi’s social control theory. Data from year 15 of Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing is employed to test these relationships using ordinary least squares regression models. Models one through …

Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek Jan 2018

Expanding Our Vision : An Empirical Examination Of Security Sector Reform, Andrew Vitek

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation contributes empirical analysis on the dynamics of security sector reform and aims to establish an understanding of the interplay between civilian governments, security forces and international actors in attempts to reform the security sectors of transitioning or reconstructing states. The need for reform programs aimed at boosting civilian control over state security forces has gained increased attention following the end of the Cold War, especially for states during regime transitions or post-conflict reconstruction. The record of success for these programs however remains inconsistent, and empirical scholarship aimed at the process at the time of writing is problematically sparse.

The Promotion Of Teacher Agency In New York State's Teacher Evaluation Policies : A Critical Discourse Analysis, Lawrence Tyler Waite Jan 2018

The Promotion Of Teacher Agency In New York State's Teacher Evaluation Policies : A Critical Discourse Analysis, Lawrence Tyler Waite

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This qualitative research study provides a critical analysis of New York State’s teacher evaluation policies to document and understand how teacher agency is promoted in these policies over time. Between 2009 and 2014, the United States Department of Education under its national Race to the Top education reform initiative incentivized significant changes to teacher evaluation policies and systems as a key strategy to enhance the quality of the teaching profession. During this same period, a growing body of research recognized teacher agency as an important capacity in improving student and teacher learning, suggesting that teachers achieve agency, both by their …

An Investigation Of Implicit And Explicit Memory In The Survival Memory Paradigm, Allison M. Wilck Jan 2018

An Investigation Of Implicit And Explicit Memory In The Survival Memory Paradigm, Allison M. Wilck

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Robust support has been found for a survival processing effect on memory when information is encoded for its fitness-relevance (Nairne, Thompson, & Pandeirada, 2007). However, support for this effect has been limited to forms of memory that require intentional, explicit retrieval processes. Thus far, the literature has failed to identify the effect in implicit, automatic memory using conceptual and perceptual production tasks (McBride, Thomas, & Zimmerman, 2013; Tse & Altarriba, 2010). In the current study, an alternative implicit memory test that employs different memory processes was employed in a further attempt to examine the survival processing effect in implicit memory. …

Asymmetric Loss, Informatics And Forecast Uncertainty, Wuwei Wang Jan 2018

Asymmetric Loss, Informatics And Forecast Uncertainty, Wuwei Wang

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this thesis I estimate the asymmetry of forecasters’ loss functions and uncertainty of forecasts. Continuous distributions are fitted into histogram density forecasts. Of the two candidates of distributions used for the fitting process, generalized beta / triangular distribution is preferred to the normal distribution for its better fit and flexibility in accommodating excess skewness. Time varying loss function asymmetry is obtained by combining the fitted density distribution and the point forecasts of the same forecaster. Utilizing generalized beta distribution and triangular distribution, I find that forecasters tend to provide more favorable forecasts in their point forecasts than in their …

Making Sense Of The Mix : Understanding The Role Of Family Dynamics In The Racial Identity Experiences Of Black-White Emerging Adults, Crystal Austin Jan 2018

Making Sense Of The Mix : Understanding The Role Of Family Dynamics In The Racial Identity Experiences Of Black-White Emerging Adults, Crystal Austin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

As a population, Black-White (B-W) biracial individuals have been relatively overlooked and underserved in the psychological literature. Although some theoretical attention has been paid to the racial identity development of biracial individuals, research is lacking on the psychological processes influencing the identity experiences of these individuals (Rockquemore et al., 2009). Specifically, little is known about how adults’ family-of-origin dynamics influence the racial identity construction process of B-W individuals.

Satisfaction Of Search (Sos) Impacts Proofreading Performance : Evidence From Eye Movements, Eliza Barach Jan 2018

Satisfaction Of Search (Sos) Impacts Proofreading Performance : Evidence From Eye Movements, Eliza Barach

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In multiple-target visual search tasks, the discovery of one target can hinder the detection of another target (i.e., “subsequent search misses”, SSMs; Cain, Adamo, & Mitroff, 2013, which are also known as “satisfaction of search” misses, SOS; Tuddenham, 1962). SSMs errors generalize to both medical and non-medical tasks (Fleck, Samei, & Mitroff, 2010) and using eye tracking methods, and a proofreading paradigm where targets are misspelled words and distractors are correctly spelled words, we document eye movement evidence of an SSM effect. Specifically, typo detection accuracy was reduced in trials containing two typos compared to trials containing a single typo. …

The Influence Of Inversions On The Perception Of Major And Minor Chords, Vincenzo Belli Jan 2018

The Influence Of Inversions On The Perception Of Major And Minor Chords, Vincenzo Belli

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A musical chord consists of three or more simultaneous notes. Of particular importance in Western music are major and minor triads. A root-position major triad consists of a tonic note, a note a major third (4 half-steps) above it, and a note a perfect fifth (7 half-steps) above it—e.g., C-E-G for a C-major chord. Similarly, a root-position minor triad consists of a tonic, a minor third (3 half-steps) above it, and the perfect fifth—e.g., C-Eb-G for a C-minor chord. Even non-musicians reliably distinguish between root-position major and minor triads as “happy” or “sad” respectively. However, there has been little investigation …

The Responsibility To Prevent : Neocolonialism, Poverty And Mass Atrocity Crimes In Africa, Eileen Brino Jan 2018

The Responsibility To Prevent : Neocolonialism, Poverty And Mass Atrocity Crimes In Africa, Eileen Brino

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Responsibility to Protect principle was founded on the premise that sovereignty requires responsibility. The principle establishes the responsibility of states to protect their citizens from mass atrocity crimes and shifts the responsibility to the international community if states fail. This thesis explains how former colonies have had particular difficulty in meeting this responsibility and often fail to protect their populations from things like severe poverty and human rights abuses including mass atrocity crimes. In former colonies the matter of responsibility is complicated by the residual effects of colonial policies that often leave former colonies impoverished, dependent, socially fragmented and …

Exemplary Welshness : The Role Of The Transnational Welsh Heritage Network And Being Welsh In Patagonia, Kimberly Anne Berg Jan 2018

Exemplary Welshness : The Role Of The Transnational Welsh Heritage Network And Being Welsh In Patagonia, Kimberly Anne Berg

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In recent years, the Welsh Diaspora community in Chubut has gained significant visibility in Welsh and other media in light of the 150th anniversary of the settlement’s establishment. In addition to the commemorative sesquicentenary celebrations taking place in July of 2015, the performance of Welshness has become increasingly congruent with homeland displays of the familiar aspects of Welsh national identity. In large parts, Welsh Patagonian language and heritage revitalization efforts have been facilitated by the transnational Welsh heritage network, composed of Welsh national institutions and Welsh Patagonian heritage associations collaborating with the expressed goal of maintaining a distinct Welsh identity …

The Effects Of Pre-Pregnancy Tobacco Use On Food Cravings And Weight Gain In Pregnancy, Lauren E. Blau Jan 2018

The Effects Of Pre-Pregnancy Tobacco Use On Food Cravings And Weight Gain In Pregnancy, Lauren E. Blau

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Smoking cessation is associated with greater frequency of food cravings, even when controlling for body mass index. Recent studies have indicated similarities between obese women and women who smoke tobacco in mood states and food craving frequency. This is consistent with the common substrate hypothesis, which postulates that shared neural pathways mediate craving across multiple domains, and could explain why it is common for women attempting to quit smoking to gain weight. Smoking cessation prior to pregnancy is strongly encouraged due to the adverse effects of tobacco use on the developing fetus. Studies have shown that women who quit smoking …

Relationships Among Community Violence Exposure, Physiological Stress Responses, And Resilience In Children, Cheryl Kayleen Best Jan 2018

Relationships Among Community Violence Exposure, Physiological Stress Responses, And Resilience In Children, Cheryl Kayleen Best

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study seeks to understand how resilience is affected by physiological stress responses in the context of community violence. The hypothesis of this paper is that physiological indicators of salivary cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) would moderate a relation between community violence exposure in children and the expression of resilience. Forty-nine children aged nine to twelve were recruited from an after-school program located in an area with high levels of community violence. Results supported our hypothesis for sAA as a moderator of the relation between community violence and resilience, such that at high sAA reactivity, a negative relation exists between …
