Teaching Monte Carlo Codes At University: Development Of A Geant4 Course For Students Of Schools Of Physics, Susanna Guatelli, Dean Cutajar, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Catherine Layton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Nowadays, it is important that students of Schools of Physics include the study of Monte Carlo codes in their curriculum as these codes are widely used in research. At the School of Engineering Physics of the University of Wollongong, we designed and set in place a Geant4 course addressed to the Medical Physics domain. In this paper, we illustrate the main features of the course and its development since 2010. The design of this course maybe adopted to teach Geant4 or any other Monte Carlo code, and in general to teach complex software tools to students with limited computing background. …

Mechanics Of Design And Model Development Of Cvc-Plus Roll Curve, Jianzhong Xu, Dianyao Gong, Zhengyi Jiang, Xianghua Liu, Guodong Wang Jan 2012

Mechanics Of Design And Model Development Of Cvc-Plus Roll Curve, Jianzhong Xu, Dianyao Gong, Zhengyi Jiang, Xianghua Liu, Guodong Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The mathematic model of CVC-Plus work roll curve is built. The ratio of the initial shifting value to the target crown is determined, and the mathematical model considering the relationship between the coefficients A2, A3, A4, A5 and is established. According to the theoretical analysis, the distance between the maximum or minimum point of the high order equivalent crown for work roll with CVC-plus roll curve and the rolling central point is the times of the roll barrel length. In general, the initial shifting value of the CVC-plus roll curve is not equal to the initial shifting value of the …

An Ontology Development Methodology To Integrate Existing Ontologies In An Ontology Development Process, Nelson K. Y Leung, Sim Kim Lau, Nicole Tsang Jan 2012

An Ontology Development Methodology To Integrate Existing Ontologies In An Ontology Development Process, Nelson K. Y Leung, Sim Kim Lau, Nicole Tsang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Ontology is defmed as an explicit specification of a conceptualization while a conceptualization is an abstract, simplified view of the world that we wish to represent for some purpose. To build high quality ontologies, developers are required to choose and follow a suitable ontology development methodology in which containing a series of steps, activities and guidelines that are put together in an organized and systematic manner. Literatures show that building ontologies by reusing existing ontologies is more cost effective than building from scratch. However, majority of the methodologies only provide a very limited discussion about how to perform integration or …

Information Systems Development Projects As Complex Adaptive Systems, Karlheinz Kautz Jan 2012

Information Systems Development Projects As Complex Adaptive Systems, Karlheinz Kautz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This research considers information systems development (ISD) projects as complex adaptive systems. We investigate the question whether complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory is relevant as a theoretical foundation for understanding ISD, and if so, which kind of understanding can be achieved by utilizing the theory? We introduce key concepts of CAS theory such as interaction, emergence, interconnected autonomous agents, selforganization, co-evolution, poise at the edge of chaos, time pacing, and poise at the edge of time to analyse and understand ISD in practice. We demonstrate the strength of such a CAS approach through an empirical case study presentation and analysis. …

Ethics In Engineering: Student Perceptions And Their Professional Identity Development, Brad Stappenbelt Jan 2012

Ethics In Engineering: Student Perceptions And Their Professional Identity Development, Brad Stappenbelt

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Professional ethics instruction in engineering is commonly conducted by examining case studies in light of the code of conduct of a suitable professional body. Although graphical presentations of spectacular failures, sobering stories of the repercussions and the solid framework provided by the tenets of a code of ethics may leave a lasting impression, students generally gain their professional identity from relatives and colleagues. Their professional ethics tend to be mostly an extension of their personal ethics. Instruction on ethics generally serves only to reinforce students' inclination to act ethically and provides encouragement to act on these beliefs. In this study …

Development Of Sipm-Based Scintillator Tile Detectors For A Multi-Layer Fast Neutron Tracker, R Preston, J Jakubek, D Prokopovich, J Uher Jan 2012

Development Of Sipm-Based Scintillator Tile Detectors For A Multi-Layer Fast Neutron Tracker, R Preston, J Jakubek, D Prokopovich, J Uher

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We are developing thin tile scintillator detectors with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout for use in a multi-layer fast-neutron tracker. The tracker is based on interleaved Timepix and plastic scintillator layers. The thin 15 x 15 x 2 mm plastic scintillators require suitable optical readout in order to detect and measure the energy lost by energetic protons that have been recoiled by fast neutrons. Our first prototype used dual SiPMs, coupled to opposite edges of the scintillator tile using light-guides. An alternative readout geometry was designed in an effort to increase the fraction of scintillation light detected by the SiPMs. The …

Development And Validation Of A Concept Inventory For Introductory-Level Climate Change Science, Lorna Jarrett, Brian Ferry, George Takacs Jan 2012

Development And Validation Of A Concept Inventory For Introductory-Level Climate Change Science, Lorna Jarrett, Brian Ferry, George Takacs

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper follows on from Jarrett, Takacs and Ferry (2011) which reported the first stage in development of a high school level concept inventory (CI) for the science of climate change: the climate change concept inventory (CCCI). In order to develop a reliable and valid instrument, it is necessary to follow appropriate procedures. This paper details the process of CI item development; reports statistical results of initial field trials and outlines how these will be used to further refine the CCCI. Item difficulty, discrimination, and point biserial coefficient were calculated for each item. Cronbach's alpha and test-retest data were used …

An Inventory Of Landslides Within The Sydney Basin To Aid The Development Of A Refined Susceptibility Zoning, Phillip N. Flentje, David Stirling, Darshika Palamakumbure Jan 2012

An Inventory Of Landslides Within The Sydney Basin To Aid The Development Of A Refined Susceptibility Zoning, Phillip N. Flentje, David Stirling, Darshika Palamakumbure

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The University of Wollongong GIS-based Landslide Inventory is currently being expanded from its Illawarra centric coverage (664 landslides) to include the 31,000km2 geological extent of the Sydney Basin and ultimately all of New South Wales (hereafter this inventory will be referred to as the NSW LI). In 1998, this inventory stood at 319 sites of instability and in 2010 it had grown to 616 landslides. The population of the Sydney Basin in 2006 was approximately 4.9 million people, representing approximately one quarter of the population of Australia. When this current phase of expansion is completed, the NSW LI will include …
