A Study Of Veterans Readmitted To Nichols Veterans Administration Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky, After Having Been Discharged "Improved" And Received "Maximum Hospital Benefits" From April Through December, 1946., Jeanne Lacourse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of patients readmitted to Nichols Veterans Administration Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky during the period of April through December of 1946. This particular project was undertaken because on general observation, there appeared to be an unusual number of patients being readmitted to the hospital after having received "maximum hospital benefits" at a previous hospital admission and having been discharged "improved". To bear out this observation, a sample study was made over a ten day period and it was found that 14 percent of all the patients being admitted were readmissions. Since this was true, the question arose …

This study is an attempt to follow the development of the group of children who attended the Mental Hygiene Clinic Nursery School of Louisville, Kentucky in its first three years, September, 1939 through May, 1942. The children were studied on a comparative basis of their behavior in the two school situations - nursery school in 1939-1942 and elementary school in 1946. The Problem Of The Chronically Ill In Louisville, Kentucky, 1946., Dinard S. Carr May 1946

The Problem Of The Chronically Ill In Louisville, Kentucky, 1946., Dinard S. Carr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the problems and implications of chronic illness will be discussed in their broader outlines, the purpose of this study is to see more specifically how chronic illness affects a particular group of patients. The questions, what are the problems and the needs of the chronically ill, what is the community doing to meet those needs, what are the facilities and what should they be, will be related to a representative sample of Louisville General Hospital patients. Many civic groups in Louisville have been articulate in expressing the need for planning for better convalescent and chronic care, among them the …

A Study Of German-Austrian Refugees In Louisville, Kentucky., Lina K. Wolff Jan 1945

A Study Of German-Austrian Refugees In Louisville, Kentucky., Lina K. Wolff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper will deal with the adjustment of refugees in an American middle-sized city, Louisville, Kentucky. It will attempt to touch the background and past of the group, but it will be pointed to a question which indeed is vital to each refugee: What does he make of his life after immigration? Can what was in origin compulsory, become constructive for the future? Will America for him be more than a haven of refuge after a harassing persecution - will it be a home for him and his children? And the answer to these questions is inextricably tied up with …

A History Of The Financing Of The Private Family Agency, Louisville, Kentucky., Verna Schwab Will Jun 1944

A History Of The Financing Of The Private Family Agency, Louisville, Kentucky., Verna Schwab Will

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Finances play an important part in the operation of any business or organization. Quite often, it is a part that is little understood or studied except by the specialists in the financial field. A large proportion of the general public pays little more than a passing glance at the published financial papers of an organization. Particularly is this true of the welfare or social service organizations. Yet such agencies are usually the ones which come in for a greater share of criticism in connection with the expenditure of money. The purpose of this study, however, is not to attempt to …

History And Development Of The Mental Hygiene Clinic Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary-Elizabeth O'Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the field of Mental Hygiene and psychiatry has been stimulated by tensions of World War II. As in other communities there are mental hygiene and psychiatric facilities in Louisville. Kentucky. Since there is no available history compiled of this development such a study seems especially valuable at this time. How the community has gone about meeting the needs in this area of work in the past may be seen through such a study and may in turn prove a guide for future planning. The purpose of this dissertation is to trace the history and development of the Louisville …

A Study Of Forty-Three Patients Who Left Waverly Hills Sanatorium Against The Doctor's Advice During The Period September 1 Through December 31, 1942., Frances Fanelli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Why do patients leave tuberculosis sanatoria against the doctor's advice? This study of home conditions of patients who left Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Waverly Hills, Kentucky, against the doctor's advice is an attempt to answer that question. We believed that by studying data regarding age, sex, occupation and marital status of the patients who left against the doctor's advice, the Sanatorium and the community could come to some understanding of the reasons for the patient's actions. How many patients were leaving against the doctor's advice? What was the size of the problem? Did these patients have active or arrested cases of …

A Follow-Up Study Of Thirty Eight Single Unmarried Mothers., Rose Migdal Apr 1944

A Follow-Up Study Of Thirty Eight Single Unmarried Mothers., Rose Migdal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study of thirty eight unmarried mothers known to the Children's Agency of Louisville, Kentucky is an attempt to find out what happens to these girls after the agency has terminated its contact with them. The study is not concerned with the problem of unmarried motherhood as such, but rather with the individual girl who gives birth to a child out of wedlock. The study, further, is not concerned with causal factors, the why and wherefore but rather with those conditions which brought the girl to a social agency when she finds that either she cannot help herself or her …

A History Of The Council Of Social Agencies Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary Trueheart Williamson Nov 1943

A History Of The Council Of Social Agencies Of Louisville, Kentucky., Mary Trueheart Williamson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Community social planning has recently received the spotlight of attention under the impacts of war and its related demands for a united nation and community. But to those who have had a more intimate contact with the field of social work this is not a new development. For more than twenty years there has been in urban areas a steady growth of organizations known as councils of social agencies, welfare councils, or community councils whose job it has been to coordinate and plan the social welfare programs for the communities of which they are a part. As in other cities, …

Convalescent Care In Louisville, Kentucky., Grace B. Caswell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is undertaken to survey and evaluate the adequacy of convalescent facilities available for indigent persons who have been under the care of the surgical service at the Louisville General Hospital. The adequacy of convalescent care will be measured first, in relation to its scope, second, in relation to its help to the patients, and third, in its interaction with other community agencies. The study is prompted by the recognition of the fact that convalescence is a sadly neglected field of medical care. Convalescence will be defined for the purposes of this study as the more or less gradual …

A Study Of Day Care Particularly In Reference To Louisville, Kentucky., Nancy Lee Johnson Jun 1943

A Study Of Day Care Particularly In Reference To Louisville, Kentucky., Nancy Lee Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A problem of great concern to many communities in the United States is that of day care of children of working mothers. Since the beginning of the defense program and particularly after the United States entered the war, wide publicity has been given to the problem of children left without supervision while their mothers worked. Communities that were affected by increases in population began to establish committees to cope with the situation. Numerous surveys were conducted in an attempt to measure the adequacy of existing facilities and the extent of the need for additional day care centers. Congressional action made …

A Study Of Twenty-Eight Working Mothers And Their Problems., Marianna E. Lawson May 1943

A Study Of Twenty-Eight Working Mothers And Their Problems., Marianna E. Lawson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

What are the problems of working mothers was the question that was uppermost in our minds when we began our study of twenty-eight working mothers and their families. We felt that through examining data regarding ages, occupation, education, marital status, number of dependents, et cetera that we would be able to ascertain at once some of the difficulties these mothers were facing. We wanted to know how much of the financial burden the mother carried and whether she was showing any signs of strain because of her double duties of wage earner and housekeeper. What help did she have from …

Tuberculosis In Louisville And Jefferson County., Anna J. Haines Jan 1942

Tuberculosis In Louisville And Jefferson County., Anna J. Haines

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is an easy complacency in Louisville about tuberculosis. Some years ago the city and Jefferson County jointly built a beautiful and spacious sanatorium at Waverley Hills. Visiting physicians praise its adequate equipment and staff. Hospital statistics prove that it supplies the city and county with more than the standard number of beds for tuberculous patients; its provision for Negro patients is unusually generous. These pleasing truths tend to dull anxiety over tuberculosis as a local menace. Other social and health problems may be admitted, but it is not generally considered that tuberculosis presents any difficulties. To what extent is …

On the first day of his first administration, President Franklin Roosevelt announced: In the field of world policy, I would dedicate this nation to the policy of the Good Neighbor -- the neighbor who resolutely respects himself and, because he does so, respects the rights of others -- the neighbor who respects his obligations and respects the sanctity of his agreements in and with a world of neighbors. Although Roosevelt's verbal touch was needed to give this foreign policy a name, definite changes in the Latin American policy of the United States had already appeared during the preceding Hoover administration. …
