Legends Of The Library Ninjas: New Frontiers In Library Instruction, Heidi Blackburn, Kate Wise
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Librarians can become disheartened when carefully prepared handouts go in the recycle bin, or are left on chairs and tables when an instruction session ends. The realization that the instruction has become stale is even more discouraging. Recognizing a need for innovative library instruction after reading Matt Upson and Michael Hall’s Library of the Living Dead, and experiencing such student apathy towards their own instruction, the librarians from Kansas State University Salina and Kansas Wesleyan University were inspired to collaborate to create a graphic novel to use as part of library instruction since neither of us felt we could tackle …

Oh, Snap! Using Popular Culture To Reach Undergraduates In Library Instruction, Heidi Blackburn, Cynthia Dudenhöff, Kate Wise
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Tired of boring, run-of-the-mill library instruction? Want to jazz up your information literacy program and connect with students? Many academic librarians struggle with making instruction sessions interesting and interactive while still incorporating all the information students need to know. This interactive webinar will provide a variety of approaches incorporating pop culture themes into information literacy instruction from several different institutions, as well as allow for participants to share their own experiences. We will provide specific ideas about what works (and what doesn’t), how to incorporate learning outcomes while not losing the pop culture hook, and assessing the impact of these …

Freshman And Sophomore Introduction To Manufacturing-Related Engineering Handbooks Using Knovel Databases, Julia L. Morse, Heidi Blackburn
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Graduates’ abilities to find and apply relevant information from engineering handbooks and reference books to their engineering and technology problems can be considered foundational to their abilities to pursue lifelong-learning in their field. Searchable, electronic access to traditional engineering handbooks and reference books as provided by the database Knovel serves as a user-friendly platform to introduce students to both the breadth and depth of reference book information available.
Engineering technology students in a freshman manufacturing processes course and a sophomore materials and metallurgy course were given a hands-on introduction to the Knovel database to promote an early familiarization to relevant …

This article offers a theoretical model of online, graduate student information seeking behavior. The qualitative methodology used to gather data for the development of the model included an electronic survey and semi-structured interviews conducted online using Adobe Connect Pro™. Participating in the study were 238 graduate students enrolled in at least one online course at a mid-western university. Data analysis included use of Zoomerang™ reports to interpret survey data, and content analysis of interview transcriptions. The resulting evolution of the Bates’ (2002) theoretical model includes new two modes of information seeking: scrutinizing (directed, dynamic), and being alert (undirected, dynamic). The …
South-Of-The-Border Boolean: Teaching Search Strategies With The Value Menu, Heidi Blackburn
South-Of-The-Border Boolean: Teaching Search Strategies With The Value Menu, Heidi Blackburn
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
As databases and Internet search engines continue to become increasingly user-friendly, the need for Boolean operator skills seems to have waned but in reality, the amount of online information is skyrocketing as thousands of articles are uploaded each day. Bridging familiar activities with new Boolean operator skills sets the stage for a smooth introduction for students and creates a strong foundation for the retention of those skills. Using the simple task of ordering from a restaurant menu to demonstrate to students they already have the skills to do successful online searching, the South-of-the-Border Boolean lesson plan connects everyday tasks and …

Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James T. Shaw
Learning To Live Without A Statistical Abstract: Thinking About Future Access To Government Information, James T. Shaw
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Twenty-four years ago, in 1987, I made a presentation called “Basic Ready Reference: Documents that a Reference Librarian Cannot Live Without” at a meeting of the Iowa Library Association Government Documents Round Table. My top recommendation was the Statistical Abstract of the United States, that annual compendium of data so familiar and indispensible to American librarians everywhere. Twelve years ago, in 1999, I made a similar presentation at the NLA/NEMA Annual Conference, and again the Statistical Abstract took its place as the preeminent resource.
The title of my presentation today, “Learning to Live Without a Statistical Abstract,” signals …

Where Is The Love? Using The Black Eyed Peas To Reach Expository Writing Students, Heidi Blackburn, Jennifer Molidor
Where Is The Love? Using The Black Eyed Peas To Reach Expository Writing Students, Heidi Blackburn, Jennifer Molidor
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Over the last year, the K-State at Salina Library has created and renovated a project utilizing contemporary music as a way to connect with students and provide research topics in an Expository Writing course. In 2003, the song “Where Is the Love?” by international music sensation The Black-Eyed Peas, swept the tops of billboard charts. With a hip-hop vibe and boundary-crossing critique of war, terrorism, discrimination, and hate crimes, the song’s themes moved fans of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Using this connection, our project emphasizes cross-departmental collaboration, and is grounded in the belief that in Freshman Composition courses the …

Climatequal® And Thinklets: Using Climatequal® With Thinklets To Facilitate Discussion And Set Priorities For Organizational Change At Criss Library, Audrey Defrank, Nora Hillyer
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Criss Library conducted the ClimateQUAL survey during the 2009 fall semester. The library had been experiencing numerous changes due to a three year library renovation, several personnel resignations and library reorganizations. There was an over-riding perception of mistrust, fear and uncertainty that needed to be addressed. Our first step in addressing the negative perceptions was to run the ClimateQUAL survey to gather statistics for a better understanding of staff perceptions. Our next step was to report on the ClimateQUAL data to the library staff and start discussions on goals and solutions for addressing the organization climate. The third step was …

11,000,000 Words: An Avalanche Of Academic Archive Photos At K-State At Salina, Heidi Blackburn, Pam Bower, Alysia Starkey
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Institutional archives have always provided a sense of history and unity for most universities. This is especially emphasized for the K-State at Salina photographic collection. The school has gone through four different name changes in the last fifty years and the library has amassed an ove1whelming assortment of photographs documenting various events on campus, from groundbreaking ceremonies to student social occasions. With an estimated total of over 11 ,000 unlabeled photographs, the K -State at Salina librarians have worked hard to begin the process of providing the university community with a useful resource for historical research in the future. Using …

The Status And Future Of Government Documents, James T. Shaw
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Depository libraries have traditionally enjoyed a pretty sweet deal—we receive free copies of documents in return for space, processing, and staff to help people use them. Depository libraries have served as key players in two areas of public policy: 1) public access to government information for the needs of today; and 2) widespread distribution of documents helps them survive to form a historical record.

Re-Kindling Interlibrary Loan, Joyce Neujahr
Re-Kindling Interlibrary Loan, Joyce Neujahr
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Amazon's Kindle device allows libraries to acquire new titles in three minutes or less. This presentation explores how this capability can be used in two important ways. First, providing an "instant interlibrary loan", by using Amazon's 225,000 available Kindle titles. Loan requests can be filled on-the-spot by downloading a book and lending the Kindle to the patron. Second, patrons gain immediate access to bestsellers, fiction, and new releases that would ordinarily require days or weeks to provide. The presentation details an actual implementation of "Kindle Loan" services. Both the concept of how wireless readers change library services, and the practical …

Bringing Semantic Diversity To The Online Catalog With Librarything, Rachel A. Erb, Melissa Cast-Brede
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
While controlled vocabularies, such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings, are an essential component of bibliographic classification, a controlled vocabulary excludes all possibilities of semantic variance by design. Also, a controlled vocabulary tends to lag behind the organic nature of language and does not account for the introduction of new or discipline specific vocabularies. These limitations present unique challenges for our users searching the OP AC. Can importing social tags in the online catalog effectively address the lack of semantic variance?
As part of the Web OPAC redesign project at UNO, LibraryThing tags were added to matching bibliographic records …
