Negotiating The Archive: Redefining The Event Of The Book Through Collaborative Engagement, Annie Smith, Christa Albrecht-Crane

This collaborative paper draws on Jacques Derrida’s philosophical notion of the “archive” to argue that reading in the classroom becomes a historical and institutional activity that animates the archive as a method of organizing and referring to texts. Thus, instruction centers on intertextuality between and among texts—as in close reading, citation, quotation, and cross-referencing. The paper argues that undertaking library research means looking beyond the book to emphasize the contingent nature of the archive, focusing on the methods of information transmission and the cultural production of knowledge. The Utah Valley University Library provides information literacy instruction via online tutorial, class workshops, and a for-credit course (CLSS 1050). In Fall 2014, CLSS 1050 was paired with a general psychology course (PSY 1010) in a learning community. Student performance on three assignments was assessed in comparison to the work of students who were not members of the learning community by a team of three librarians and two UVU staff members as part of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Assessment in Action project. Librarians have collected database usage statistics for as long as they have been available. But other than using them to decide whether or not to renew a database subscription, what can we use them for? The session will begin with a brief overview of COUNTER compliance and what kinds of reports are available from vendors before discussing how to mix, blend, and splice your usage numbers to get the most out of your statistics. The session will include group activities to give you some hands-on experience.

Games offer an engaging and effective way to orient students to the library and library services. Using a self-paced game approach, Utah Valley University created two unique games to introduce students to the physical layout of the library as well as to the electronic services available from the library’s website. In this program, attendees will learn the foundations to educational gaming, information for developing basic orientation games and assessment data showing that games are valid method for learning.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe how Utah Valley University Library staff created two games to orient students to the library and library services.
Design/methodology/approach – Library staff developed and marketed the Get a Clue game, which used clues placed throughout the building at the beginning of the Fall semester to orient new students as they solved a mystery. During the Spring semester, the library staff introduced library services through LibraryCraft, an online game where students used library resources to slay a dragon.
Findings – In post-game surveys, students found the games entertaining and informative. The …
