Human Relations Resources: A Guide To Extension- Oriented Publications, James L. Satterlee Dr.

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

The bibliographic information provided in this pamphlet is the first step in a potentially larger project being undertaken by the Department of Rural Sociology at South Dakota State University. The ultimate objective of the overall project would be to compile a detailed annotated bibliography of extension social science related materials available nation-wide. It is the feeling of the department that the communication network within and between Regions is not sufficient at this time to allow Extension personnel to be aware of the multitude of support materials available to them. Such awareness may allow us to make use of materials already …

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

Since the first printing of a publication in 1956 entitled Acculturation of the Dakota Indians, a steady demand has been made upon the Department of Rural Sociology for copies. Since the original, two more printings have taken place (1968 and 1970) so as to meet demands of the public for this information. In the last two years, with increased interest in the Indian situation in South Dakota, students, agency officials and the public in general have indicated a need for more information pertaining to the culture of the Dakota people prior to white contact and the assimilation process. Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

The students in the Intermediate Sociology class, Fall Semester, 1971, decided that a worthwhile class project would be to up-date the 1964 “A Guide to Periodical Publications in Sociology and Related Disciplines", in view of the fact that there had been a significant increase in University Library periodical acquisitions since 1964. The students believed that an up-to-date annotated guide to periodical literature in the field of Sociology and related sciences would be a useful research tool for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the social sciences, and, more particularly in the field of Sociology. The class felt that a much …

The Migration Of Young Adults 1950-1963: South Dakota Counties, State Economics Areas And States In North Central Region, Deaprtment Of Rural Sociology, South Dakota State College

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

South Dakota was the second most rural state in the North Central Region1 in 1960 with 61 percent of the state 's population living in rural areas. Only North Dakota, with 65 percent rural population, surpassed South Dakota within the North Central Region. Throughout the United States, rural areas have been experiencing a definite loss of people through out-migration. South Dakota is no exception. Even though the state gained four percent in population from 1950 to 1960, there was a total net out-migration of slightly over 14 percent. There were 121,736 more births than deaths in South Dakota between 1950 …

South Dakota Population 1950-1960: State And County Population Gains And Losses, Agricultural Experiment Station, South Dakota State College

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

The general trends of change in South Dakota's population have continued during the 1950-60 decade. The State's total population was enumerated in 1960 as 680,514 persons, a 4.3% gain during the ten year period. This total gain in the South Dakota population was greater than those which have occurred during each of the previous three decades. This 1950-60 increased total growth has led many South Dakotan's to believe that the rate of net out-migration of South Dakota's population during the 1930’s and 1940's must be slowing down or even decreasing. But to the contrary, South Dakota's net outmigration during the …

Acculturation Of The Dakota Indians, Vernon D. Malan Jun 1956

Acculturation Of The Dakota Indians, Vernon D. Malan

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

In this pamphlet the process of acculturation among the Dakota Indians--the change which has taken place in Dakota culture as a result of contact with the dominant Caucasian society--has been analyzed. We may conclude from this study that in general culture change was most likely to occur among the Dakotas when the new culture elements satisfied some basic or secondary drive of the people. Culture change was likewise dependent upon the manner in which the new ideas were introduced to them. If the changes were attempted through coercion, they were not so readily accepted as those made voluntarily. The policies …

Social Implications Of Weather Modification, Orville E. Lanham Aug 1950

Social Implications Of Weather Modification, Orville E. Lanham

Agricultural Experiment Station Rural Sociology Pamphlets (1940-1977)

From the research reviewed, several generalizations may be derived. Some degree of caution is to be used as these generalizations are drawn mostly from the studies of three researchers (Lanham, Larson, Haas). Through personal interaction these researchers have cooperated in the design of the basic interview instrument and sample design. Thus, with some common units of measurement the results of the three studies can be compared across time and space. [1] The studies indicate that the public has little knowledge of weather modification. [2] The studies show favorable attitudes and support for cloud seeding programs. [3] The research findings are …

The fact that 482 common school districts in South Dakota failed to operate a single too small. It may be noted that 25 counties had nine or more districts without schools. The fact that 10 west river counties were in this category is especially significant in as much as most of the districts in this part of the state are a township or more in size.

The suggestion for solving the problems of over-churched and unchurched Areas in Brown County is Town Areas i.e. over churching in towns is partially responsible for an unchurched condition there. The first step, therefore, would be to cut down denominational overlapping by one of the following methods of comity. A) Denominational exchange, b) Undenominational, c) Federated

During Pioneer days most of the farmers’ activities were confined within a radius of three or four miles- a distance commonly known as a” team haul.” In more recent years, improved transportation facilities have permitted farm families to go to village centers for an increasing proportion of their goods and services.
