Library Staff Publications

Over the past few years, there has been an increase in libraries recruiting positions such as DEI Librarian, Librarian for Inclusion, and Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Organizational Excellence. The positions are often vague about the job responsibilities but specific about the expectations of promoting EDI- whether in collections, staff, or culture. This article explores this DEI work through an interview with Ione Damasco, the Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence, Engagement, and Operations at the University of Dayton.

Maximizing The Discovery Of Data Sets In The Yale University Library Catalog.”, Rowena Griem, Yukari Sugiyama, Tachtorn Meier

Library Staff Publications

Yale University Library’s Dataset Cataloging Task Force was formed in spring 2019 to address issues raised by the inclusion of data set holdings in the institutional catalog. The paper describes the group’s assessment of existing cataloging practices and the current integrated library system environment; the process of developing cataloging guidelines in the absence of authoritative resources to optimize the discoverability and accessibility of data sets in the online library catalog; and proposed next steps to discuss, establish, and document national guidelines for cataloging data sets so that these increasingly important resources are treated in a consistent manner in institutional, consortial, …

Modeling Black Literature: Behind The Screen With The Black Bibliography Project, Brenna Bychowski, Melissa Barton

Library Staff Publications

The Black Bibliography Project (BBP) plans to produce a bibliographic database of printed works by Black writers from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. With the support of the Beinecke Library and a grant from the Mellon Foundation, project co-PIs and codirectors Jacqueline Goldsby and Meredith McGill collaborated with a team of librarians from Yale to develop the data model for their database. Drawing on Beinecke’s James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection to pull case studies, the team of librarians developed a Linked Data model for BBP in an instance of Wikibase and trained and supported a group of graduate student …

Support Services At Yale University For Teaching With Primary Sources: An Exploration Of Instructor Rationales And Needs, Melissa Grafe, David Hirsch, Bill Landis, Sara Powell

Library Staff Publications

Between October and December 2019, investigators participating in an Ithaka S+R study interviewed fifteen Yale instructors who teach with primary sources in humanities and humanities-leaning social science disciplines. The conversations focused on the interviewees’ background, training, and experience utilizing primary sources in their undergraduate teaching at Yale, as well as their pedagogical goals, strategies, successes and challenges, and perceived needs as practitioners of primary source-based instruction.

Interviewees were eloquent in articulating the wide variety of pedagogical goals that motivate their work to incorporate primary sources in all formats into their syllabi and teaching practice. Very few cited any formal training …

Jean-Étienne Despréaux, Bibliophile, Dominique Bourassa Jan 2019

Jean-Étienne Despréaux, Bibliophile, Dominique Bourassa

Library Staff Publications

This paper delves into the life and career of Jean-Étienne Despréaux (1748-1820), as read through a catalogue of his library. The catalogue, the earliest known detailed record of books owned by a dancing master, was printed after Despréaux’s death to announce the sale of his library in a 3-day auction. It reveals Despréaux’s wide-ranging reading interests and his desire to build a comprehensive collection of books about dance—a collection that would anticipate the modern notion of a canon of historical dance monuments. The most interesting book in the collection is a copy of the 1589 edition of Thoineau Arbeau’s Orchésographie …

Of The People, By The People, For The People: Critical Pedagogy And Government Information, Melanie Maksin

Library Staff Publications

This chapter focuses on pedagogical frames and techniques that encourage student engagement and problematize the process-and-product model of government information. These strategies reflect four interconnected ideas, namely

• that government information is political,

• that access to government information is political,

• that government information has value both in scholarly contexts and in individuals’ daily lives, and

• that we can intervene in the production and dissemination of government information.

Library E-Book Platforms Are Broken: Let's Fix Them, Joelle Thomas, Galadriel Chilton Jan 2016

Library E-Book Platforms Are Broken: Let's Fix Them, Joelle Thomas, Galadriel Chilton

Library Staff Publications

E-books promise users convenience and accessibility, but library e-book platforms contain so many barriers to use and access that patrons often turn away in frustration. In addition, aggregators’ e-book platforms often include intrusive, onerous digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. The traditional solution of DRM-free e-books are generally only available only in large and expensive publisher packages. One approach to solving these problems is an evidence-based selection of e-books program; it not only offers access to hundreds of DRM-free, unlimited simultaneous-user e-books that are integrated with similar e-journal content, but also includes an agreement that libraries will only purchase titles with …

In 2013, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded a group of librarians from ARL's Research Library Leadership Fellows program a planning grant to examine the center of excellence (CoE) model for information services. Used in a variety of industries, CoEs are designed to attract the most talented researchers in a particular field, enhance collaboration, and improve access to the resources needed for their research. The planning grant was awarded to determine whether the CoE model could serve as a means to provide the new services required for the effective use of digital information.

This report describes the team's approach to …

Dancing By Numbers: Dance's Expanding Presence In Library Classifications Of The Progressive Era, Dominique Bourassa Jan 2015

Dancing By Numbers: Dance's Expanding Presence In Library Classifications Of The Progressive Era, Dominique Bourassa

Library Staff Publications

Library classifications are artificial systems that use numbers, letters, and symbols to map knowledge as the basis for organizing the contents of libraries. Inevitably influenced by social forces and cultural values, the Dewey Decimal, Cutter Expansive, and Library of Congress classification systems offer a unique perspective to study the status and identity of dance between 1876 and 1930. From the standpoint of library taxonomies, dance evolves during this period from an indoor amusement with moral implications to a recognized art form and discipline.

Dancing In The Stacks: Dance Works And The Concept Of Authorship In Libraries, Dominique Bourassa Jan 2014

Dancing In The Stacks: Dance Works And The Concept Of Authorship In Libraries, Dominique Bourassa

Library Staff Publications

It is self-evident to choreographers, dancers and dance scholars that dances are works in their own right as much as literary and musical works are. However, from an American library perspective, this fact was not fully acknowledged until 20 years ago. Indeed, the historical mistreatment of dance works has evolved from their once total absence from subject taxonomies, to their being classified with works about recreation instead of among the “serious” arts, to their being subordinated to music. The situation greatly improved in 1994 with the publication by the Library of Congress (LC) of special cataloging rules that finally treat …

Unpacking EugèNe Giraudet’S Library: Dance, Books, And International Relations In Fin-De-SièCle Paris, Dominique Bourassa

Library Staff Publications

Eugène Giraudet (1861-19?) was an exceptionally prolific and influential Parisian dance teacher, choreographer, author, and bibliophile. His library catalog, published in his 1900 Traité de la danse, Tome II, Grammaire de la danse et du bon ton, is more than a simple record of the books he owned. It also serves as a wish list and a directory of prominent dance personalities. As a whole, it presents an unparalleled conspectus of dance teaching, book collecting, business, and international networks radiating from a major metropolis—the historical urban center of the dance world—in the late-nineteenth century.
