Inner Portraits, Bethany Salisbury May 2023

Inner Portraits, Bethany Salisbury

Graduate Theses

This paper investigates the many interconnected layers of women’s mental health through portraiture and how animal and plant symbolism can represent the way women's hormones and bodily health affect their mental health. I reveal how the artwork created presents these connections and inner mental health narratives to the viewer, creating a space of empathy, destigmatization, and self-reflection. This body of portraiture art connects five women through a series of both two-and three-dimensional portraits based on interviews using my own adaptation of Sara Lawrence-Lightfoots’ (1983) portrait methodology.

Women and non-binary individuals have always dealt with difficult interactions of bodily and mental …

Episcopal Church Home For Children Records - Accession 31, Episcopal Church Home For Children Jan 2023

Episcopal Church Home For Children Records - Accession 31, Episcopal Church Home For Children

Manuscript Collection

This collection is a valuable source on the Church’s historical effort to extend its services for the social improvement of South Carolina (in this case the Episcopal Diocese’s program for destitute children.) While there is information on the Episcopal Home for Children from its beginning in 1850 to 1967, the actual records do not start until 1866. A centennial history of the Episcopal Home will serve as an aid and general guideline to the researcher. (See box 1, folder 1). The collection consists of minutes, reports of the annual meeting, general correspondence, superintendent’s records, health records, attendance registers, financial records, …

Familial And Community Influences On The Sports Socialization Of Black Boys: A Case Study, Timothy Smith Oct 2022

Familial And Community Influences On The Sports Socialization Of Black Boys: A Case Study, Timothy Smith

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

From an early age, many children are engaged in or connected to various sporting activities. In a recent study, the Aspen Institute (2018) reported that 61.1% of males between the ages of six and 12 had played a team sport at least one day in 2016. Statistical data on racial differences and child involvement in sport activities is sparse. However, while the research on Black sports socialization is limited, Stodolska, Shinew, Floyd, and Walker (2014) were able to link Black sport involvement to cultural and gendered forms of socialization, which is often perpetuated through interpersonal relationships and interactions. Despite the …

The Impact Of Long-Term Travel On The Socio-Political Consciousness Of South Carolina Students, Sierra Davis Oct 2022

The Impact Of Long-Term Travel On The Socio-Political Consciousness Of South Carolina Students, Sierra Davis

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

This pilot study’s driving force is to contribute to the student travel and study abroad literature and provide insight for social workers interested in practice on the global level. Social Work practice strongly emphasizes the importance of continuing education. On the macro level, advocacy and knowledge of policy can inform actions taken in the field. Literature surrounding study abroad among students typically focuses on cultural and educational impact, with little broad research focus on how study abroad experiences impact global awareness. The United Nations created a list of goals, known as the Sustainable Development Goals, aimed towards the rectification of …

The Impact Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder On Academic Performance In Undergraduate Students Following A Brief Guided Meditation, Ali Maclay Oct 2022

The Impact Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder On Academic Performance In Undergraduate Students Following A Brief Guided Meditation, Ali Maclay

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

Many undergraduate college students report high levels of anxiety, which can negatively impact their academic performance. Meditation is currently being explored as a method to reduce anxiety, with the duration and frequency under investigation to optimize outcomes. Therefore, this pilot study examined whether the severity of generalized anxiety disorder affected the influence of a brief, one-time, guided meditation on undergraduate academic performance. This study also investigated student perceptions of meditation and test anxiety. Students completed the GAD-7 to assess levels of anxiety, participated in a brief meditation, completed a lab quiz, and evaluated their meditation experience through a post-survey. We …

Shut Up And Dribble: How Twitter Users Attempt To Mute Athlete Opinion, Monejah Black

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

Professional athletes have engaged in several methods of activism to show their discontent with President Donald Trump, including forgoing the traditional White House visit for teams who win national championships. This form of protest has headlined the national media, especially since President Trump has personally uninvited players and teams through Twitter. NBA superstars, such as LeBron James, also took to Twitter to attack and criticize the president, resulting in a cascade of tweets from NBA players with disparaging remarks about the president. This research will analyze and categorize Twitter users’ replies to these tweets. Results show that most of the …

Assessing Stress In College Students After Breathing Meditation With And Without Music, Joshua L. Le Clerg

Graduate Theses

College students face increased levels of stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which can adversely affect their academic performance. Therefore, it is critical for students to have access to practices that reduce stress, such as breathing meditations and listening to calming music, which are cost effective and require minimal time commitment. This study aimed to examine the efficacy of combining breathing meditation and listening to music for five minutes a day, five days a week, for two weeks. Fifteen undergraduate students completed the study and were randomly assigned to a control group who completed the breathing meditation without music (n=8) …

The Aids Virus And The Galvanization Of The Lgbtq Movement For Equality, Michael Ernest Wachowski Aug 2020

The Aids Virus And The Galvanization Of The Lgbtq Movement For Equality, Michael Ernest Wachowski

Graduate Theses

The LGBTQ community was greatly altered by the AIDS crisis and the organizations that were founded in the 1980s. AIDS would become associated with those of the gay community during the early years of the crisis. The government and leading health officials perpetuated the public’s ignorance about the relativity new disease leading to more misunderstandings and mishandlings of the HIV/AIDS crisis. The disease did not discriminate among people, however, and quickly spread throughout many of the communities in the U.S. Organizations with roots in the LGBTQ community established themselves during the 1980s to deal with not only the AIDS crisis, …

Video Killed The Drag Star: Identity Presentation, Language, And Queer Habitus, Hayley Neiling May 2020

Video Killed The Drag Star: Identity Presentation, Language, And Queer Habitus, Hayley Neiling

Graduate Theses

Pierre Bourdieu defines habitus as “the ability to produce classifiable practices and works, and the capacity to differentiate and appreciate these practices and products (taste), that the represented social world, i.e., the space of life-styles, is constituted” (170). In other words, habitus is the combination of our habits, perceptions, and presentations that are formed from the ingrained ideas of our society. Our habitus is both performed and perceived, and in this way, we gain cultural capital, which is the curating of knowledge, skills, and behaviors which demonstrate our value. Habitus is deeply affected by our position in society, particularly class. …

The Effects Of Competition And Student Ability On Achievement Goals, Kelsey Allen, Gabrielle E. Mcgee, Shannan Keianna Goodwin Apr 2020

The Effects Of Competition And Student Ability On Achievement Goals, Kelsey Allen, Gabrielle E. Mcgee, Shannan Keianna Goodwin

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

The present study examined whether the effect of competition on achievement goals depends on student ability. The 129 college students who participated in this study received a packet that included a short learning activity with corresponding questions, an achievement goal questionnaire, and demographic items. Half of the packets contained instructions that had students answer the questions to the best of their ability, which created a non-competitive environment. The other half contained instructions that had students do the best that they could, because their scores would be ranked against those of their classmates. This facilitated classroom competition. Afterward, the students completed …

The Effects Of Media On Gender Identity/Sexual Orientation Comfort And Attitudes Toward The Lgbtq+ Community, Katherine Harper, Jaylan Luvene Apr 2020

The Effects Of Media On Gender Identity/Sexual Orientation Comfort And Attitudes Toward The Lgbtq+ Community, Katherine Harper, Jaylan Luvene

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

The main hypothesis was that after viewing a lesbian-appearing profile, participants would have a more positive view of the LGBTQ+ community, compared to participants who viewed a heterosexual-appearing profile. Additionally, it was hypothesized that more media representation of LGBTQ+ and prevalence of LGBTQ+ role models would produce a positive correlation with attitudes. Participants were 16 men, 55 women and nine participants who did not gender identify. The participants’ ages ranged from 18-50+. Through an online survey, using various questionnaires, participants’ attitudes toward the social media profiles (one profile appearing heterosexual and the other lesbian) were assessed. It was found that …

Sustainable Development And Environmental Justice: Connecting Students To Global Issues, Sierra T. Davis

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

This pilot study will contribute to the literature surrounding study abroad using a new framework to gauge the effect travel has on knowledge of global issues. The United Nations created a list of sustainable development goals meant to rectify pressing issues in the United States and abroad. The goals have been separated into the categories of ending poverty, ensuring prosperity for all, and protection of the planet. Using them as the framework for a quantitative study, data were collected from college-level students around South Carolina on perceptions of global issues through a sustainable lens. The project has had two phases; …

The Real And Perceived Effects Of Social Media Usage On Relationship Outcomes, Stephanie Carr, Kayla Pelle, Tiana Whitney, Destiny Black

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

Social media platforms are one of the most common ways that humans interact in societies all over the world. The primary purpose of the current study was to examine the influence of social media on the outcomes of relationship satisfaction. We hypothesized that both real and hypothetical social media usage would associate with decreased romantic relationship satisfaction. This study consisted of 138 participants that were a convenience sample of Winthrop University students. Those participants aided in measuring perceptions of social media through completing social media usage scenarios and previously created questionnaires. The scenarios described the average day of a Winthrop …

Examining The Evolution Of Interaction Between Researchers And Indigenous Populations: An Investigation Of Archaeologists And The Maya, Kaitlyn Clingenpeel Apr 2020

Examining The Evolution Of Interaction Between Researchers And Indigenous Populations: An Investigation Of Archaeologists And The Maya, Kaitlyn Clingenpeel

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

Interactions with Indigenous populations around the world have been, and continue to be, riddled with the remnants of colonialist and imperialist ideals. This can be especially true when considering archaeologists and the modern ancestors of the groups of people they study. There has more recently been a push for more ethical fieldwork methodologies, though they are still not the common practice for archaeological fieldwork. By using more collaborative research methodologies, it is possible to push for change and create a more mutually beneficial research environment. Through the examination of the evolution of interactions with the Maya population living in Guatemala …

Two Drug Epidemics In A Racist World: Comparing The Crack Crisis With The Opioid Epidemic, Téa Franco Apr 2020

Two Drug Epidemics In A Racist World: Comparing The Crack Crisis With The Opioid Epidemic, Téa Franco

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

America has faced two nationwide drug addictions: the crack crisis and the opioid epidemic. Despite several similarities in the spread of the addictions, the two garnered vastly different reactions from the media, society, and the government. It has become apparent that the reason for these different reactions is the race of those typically afflicted by each addiction. The crack crisis predominantly affected impoverished communities of color, whereas the opioid epidemic has affected more white Americans. Through journalistic methods including FOIA requests, government documents, interviews, and the gathering of primary and secondary sources, I have examined the way that race plays …
