A History Of The Guam Public Library System 1947-1975, Mary Sue Caldwell Dec 1977

A History Of The Guam Public Library System 1947-1975, Mary Sue Caldwell

Dissertations

This historical study ascertained that, between the years of 1902 and 1941, there were libraries on Guam which served the local civilian population. Early library development on Guam (prior to 1947) did not seem to have followed the same pattern of development as libraries in the United States. This may have been due, in part, to the individuals responsible for the two library movements on Guam. The Guam Public Library System and its predecessors were established by individuals from the continental United States, where libraries had already undergone a developmental process. Thus, the library on Guam seems to have been …

Student Profiles And Factors Affecting Student Attrition And Persistence At The University Of Guam, Lorraine Constance Yamashita

Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to delineate several dimensions of the attrition problem at the University of Guam, to identify factors which were potentially contributory to the attrition problem and to provide information which could be used as a basis for institutional direction and planning.

Two subproblems were addressed in the study. The first subproblem was to develop a student profile, both academic and demographic, of those who withdrew and those who persisted. The second subproblem was to obtain and evaluate student views on attrition.

Two hypotheses were posited. The first hypothesis was that students who left the University …

The Effect Of Withdrawal From The Negative Cue On Learning A Simultaneous Discrimination, Carl Merle Johnson Dec 1977

The Effect Of Withdrawal From The Negative Cue On Learning A Simultaneous Discrimination, Carl Merle Johnson

Masters Theses

Three groups of rats learned a black-white discrimination in a Grice box. All subjects were reinforced with food pellets for correct choices. No-Retrace subjects were confined in the negative goal box after errors. Retrace subjects were allowed to withdraw after errors from the negative goal box to the choice point or start box. Take-Out subjects were manually removed from the goal box during errors immediately after inspecting the empty food dish. All subjects were trained to a criterion and then reversal training was instituted. Retrace subjects learned the original discrimination significantly slower than either No-Retrace or Take-Out subjects, which did …

From Isolation To Organization: Structural Barriers To Client-Induced Accountability In The Human Services, Robert A. Beauregard Sep 1977

From Isolation To Organization: Structural Barriers To Client-Induced Accountability In The Human Services, Robert A. Beauregard

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Human service organizations form an environment which is both difficult for an individual to transverse and antagonistic to the organizing of clients. The structure of these organizational environments is not conducive to the emergence of client organizations. This issue forms the focus of this paper: the interaction between the structural dimensions of human service, organizational environments and the potential for human service clients to form organizations geared to obtaining accountability from human service agencies. The basic argument is that the structural dimensions of these organizational environments (i.e., the characteristics which affect the basic interrelationships among component parts) have a depressing …

The Runaway Youth, Richard M. Grinnell, Monna Loftis Sep 1977

The Runaway Youth, Richard M. Grinnell, Monna Loftis

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

To date, few (if any) empirically based research studies have been executed in exploring the relationship between the recidivism rate of runaways and the three possible types of dispositions they may receive: (1) counseled and released at the intake level; (2) referred to another social agency; or (3) placed on probation. It is critically pertinent to examine this relationship before attempting to plan alternatives to divert the youths from the juvenile justice system. This article presents the results of an empirically based project where the findings indicate that, regardless of the type of disposition the youths received, they had approximately …
