The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Mood Disorders, Jeannette German
Honors College Theses
Abstract
According to the Fundamental Cause Theory, socioeconomic status (SES) is comprised of multiple variables, including money, prestige, social status, and power (Phelan, 2010). The scientific literature has continued to reveal a robust relationship between SES and mental health outcomes. The same literature also highlights the role played by race, age, and gender in modulating this relationship. There are a multitude of models and theories from various disciplines that attempt to explain why and how SES impacts mental health. This literature review will include prominent theories and models in the field of psychology and public health. Specifically, the present literature …

An Experimental Test Of Green Management Information System Effects On Carrier Selection: Weigh Station And Tollbooth Bypass Technology Adoption, Rodney W. Thomas, Jessica L. Robinson, Jessica L. Darby, Scott Cox, Donnie F. Williams Jr
Journal of Transportation Management
In a highly competitive price-driven industry, carriers are continuously searching for opportunities to differentiate their offerings, minimize operational costs, and appeal to shippers. At the same time, environmental sustainability has evolved from being trendy jargon into a requirement for competitive supply chain management. It is at the intersection of these two modern topics that the current study identifies a new carrier selection attribute based on a specialized type of green management information system. We apply social exchange theory to hypothesize carrier price and green technology adoption effects on shipper purchase intent. The hypothesized direct and interaction effects are tested by …
Social Media And Supply Chain Risk Management: Improving Risk Detection And Supply Chain Resilience, Scott R. Cox, J Kirk Atkinson
Social Media And Supply Chain Risk Management: Improving Risk Detection And Supply Chain Resilience, Scott R. Cox, J Kirk Atkinson
Journal of Transportation Management
The introduction of social media has changed the methods by which many individuals, communities, and organizations communicate and interact. The increasing popularity of social media within a business context has forced executives to rethink how they operate their businesses. Chae (2015) observed that the field of supply chain management (SCM) has been lagging in identifying the potential role and use of social media in both research and practice. Recently, greater attention is being given to social media and its potential uses within the supply chain. This paper investigates the potential use for social media as a technology to help with …
The Tumultuous World Of Global Maritime Transportation: A Cautionary Tale For Supply Chain Managers, Kent N. Gourdin
The Tumultuous World Of Global Maritime Transportation: A Cautionary Tale For Supply Chain Managers, Kent N. Gourdin
Journal of Transportation Management
The past five years have seen unprecedented changes transform the way goods are moved around the world. The expanded Panama Canal now permits larger vessels as well as simultaneous transits in each direction. Coincidently, steamship lines began purchasing a new generation of bigger ships, forcing ports in the United States to make very large investments in new infrastructure. When examined within the context of other environmental events impacting global trade, the total effect has been to put the maritime industry into a state of flux. This paper will examine these and other important issues before offering conclusions intended to help …

Your Community Gets A B-: Analysis Of The Specific And Curious Realm Of Airport Bond Rating, Richard W. Hawkins, Stephen A. Lemay, Peter M. Ralston
Journal of Transportation Management
Commercial airports are publicly-owned transportation infrastructure, usually funded with bonds. The bond rating decision for these entities thus has important ramifications for bond investors, issuers, airport managers, and even the communities the airports serve, but the rating decision process is not well understood. This paper discusses a simulation of the rating process in two decision environments, including a downgrade. The effect of information framing in an environment of incomplete data is examined using amateur evaluators. Amateur evaluators were utilized to understand how people with limited financial analysis skills would respond when presented with incomplete information and a primed scenario. The …

Economic Design Of Acceptance Sampling Plans For Truncated Life Tests Using Three-Parameter Lindley Distribution, Amer Ibrahim Al-Omari, Enrico Ciavolino, Amjad D. Al-Nasser
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A single acceptance sampling plan for the three-parameter Lindley distribution under a truncated life test is developed. For various consumer’s confidence levels, acceptance numbers, and values of the ratio of the experimental time to the specified average lifetime, the minimum sample size important to assert a certain average lifetime are calculated. The operating characteristic (OC) function values as well as the associated producer’s risks are also provided. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the suggested acceptance sampling plans.

Controversies resulting from genetic testing on skeletal remains of disputed stewardship raise important questions about obligations inherent on genetic researchers to assure ethical chain of custody. In this paper, we analyze and evaluate several proposed positions on whether such research should be published. Following jurisprudential standards for legitimate regulatory systems, we argue that responsible conduct of research requires reasonable attention to chain of custody, but cannot require guarantees, particularly in cases of ancient remains.

We identified the mitochondrial DNA haplogroups A, B, C and D in 75 present-day Maya individuals, 24 Maya individuals of the colonial period and one pre-Columbian Maya individual from Quintana Roo, Mexico. We examined these data together with those of 21 Maya populations accounting for 647 present-day Maya individuals and 104 ancient Maya individuals. A demographic study based on the analysis of fertility and endogamy was carried out in two modern Maya populations to identify cultural factors that influence the mitochondrial haplogroup genetic diversity. Most present-day and ancient Maya populations show a distribution pattern of mitochondrial haplogroup frequencies A, C, …

Malaria is an endemic disease in a large part of Colombia, and the city of Buenaventura reports one of the highest malaria infection rates. Some genetic variants confer resistance to malaria, such as the heterozygote for hemoglobin S (HbS) and the homozygous variant FYBES/FYBES of the Duffy gene. The aim of this work was the molecular characterization of these genes in an afrodescendent population from the urban area of Buenaventura. A total of 819 individuals from a stratified random sampling in each of the 12 communities of this city were analysed. Molecular analysis was performed using PCR-RFLP, …

Complexity, Genetic Causation, And Hereditarianism, Charles Roseman
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Hereditarians have claimed that recent advances in psychological and psychiatric genetics support their contention that individual and group socially important aspects of behavior and cognition are largely insensitive to environmental context. This has been countered by anti- hereditarians who (correctly) claim that the conclusion of genetic ineluctability is false. Anti- hereditarians, however, sometimes use problematic arguments based on complexity and the ignorance that comes with complexity and a demand for mechanistic, as opposed to variational, explanations for the ways in which genes affect phenotype. I argue here, as a committed anti-hereditarian, that the complexity gambit and the demand for mechanisms …

A number of recent articles have appeared on the hominin Denisova fossil remains. Many of them focus on attempts to produce DNA sequences from the extracted samples. Often these project mtDNA sequences from the fossil remains of a number of Neandertal fossils and the Denisovans in an attempt to understand the evolution of Mid Pleistocene human ancestors. These papers, introduce a number of problems in the interpretation of speciation in hominins. One concerns the degradation of the ancient DNA and its interpretation as authentic genetic information. Another concerns the idea of “species” versus that of “population” and the use of …

The Development And Use Of Computational Tools In Forensic Science, Dennis E. Slice
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Modern computational resources make available a rich toolkit of statistical methods that can be applied to forensic questions. This toolkit is built on the foundation of statistical developments dating back to the 19th century. To fully and effectively exploit these developments, both the makers and users of software must be keenly aware of the quality, i.e., the accuracy and precision, of the data being modeled or analyzed, and end-users must be sufficiently familiar with the underlying theory to understand the process and results of any analysis or software they use. This is especially important for medico-legal personnel who might be …

Voter disillusionment is commonplace in the United States, with many eligible voters either choosing not to or altogether unable to exercise their right to vote. To the former, in 2016 alone, nearly 40 percent of eligible voters did not vote. Although it is an issue that extends to the health of a democracy, voting itself is not one that is central to campaign platforms, with candidates running on more high-profile issues such as healthcare or the economy. A solution to voter disillusionment is for pragmatically minded candidates to organize their campaigns around voter expansion as a means to build winning …
Measure Of Departure From Marginal Average Point-Symmetry For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Kiyotaka Iki, Sadao Tomizawa
Measure Of Departure From Marginal Average Point-Symmetry For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Kiyotaka Iki, Sadao Tomizawa
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
For the analysis of two-way contingency tables with ordered categories, Yamamoto, Tahata, Suzuki, and Tomizawa (2011) considered a measure to represent the degree of departure from marginal point-symmetry. The maximum value of the measure cannot distinguish two kinds of marginal complete asymmetry with respect to the midpoint. A measure is proposed which can distinguish two kinds of marginal asymmetry with respect to the midpoint. It also gives large-sample confidence interval for the proposed measure.

Upper Record Values From Extended Exponential Distribution, Devendra Kumar, Sanku Dey
Upper Record Values From Extended Exponential Distribution, Devendra Kumar, Sanku Dey
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Some recurrence relations are established for the single and product moments of upper record values for the extended exponential distribution by Nadarajah and Haghighi (2011) as an alternative to the gamma, Weibull, and the exponentiated exponential distributions. Recurrence relations for negative moments and quotient moments of upper record values are also obtained. Using relations of single moments and product moments, means, variances, and covariances of upper record values from samples of sizes up to 10 are tabulated for various values of the shape parameter and scale parameter. A characterization of this distribution based on conditional moments of record …

The Modifiability Of Risk Factors Associated With Adolescent Suicide And Its Preventions, Nastaeen Tajin
Honors College Theses
Adolescent suicide has been of major concern in the past few decades, with the rates steadily increasing every year. Suicide can be defined as the act of intentionally taking one’s life. Adolescent refers to children between the age of 13 and 19, although the term will be used interchangeably with ‘teen’ throughout this paper. The purpose of this study had been to identify the risk factors of suicide associated with children of this age range, and propose preventative measures based on the modifiability of these risk factors. In order to achieve this, the two search catalogs utilized were the Wayne …

The Controversy Of Sexual Violence In The University Setting: Are College Athletes Given A Lighter Sentence Due To Their “Status”, Emma Weber
Honors College Theses
The following paper investigates sexual violence on university campuses. It discusses the role of the Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 along with a Dear Colleague Letter enacted by the United States’ federal government to all public institutions regarding how to respond when complaints and allegations of sexual violence are made. The paper addresses the statistics and common misconceptions surrounding sexual violence on college campuses before focusing specifically on student-athletes’ involvement in sexually violent crimes. It then looks into three highly publicized cases where student-athletes are the alleged perpetrators of sexual violence. The three cases analyzed are: the …
