Kathy led the group in a short meditation. She asked that we: “Accept ourselves in the present moment, just the way we are. Then we can experience that flame of love within us. Then we are able to extend love and blessings to others. Celebrate what makes us unique. Embrace all of it. Honor yourself. Do not judge yourself. Through awareness we will do things differently, if need be. Let go of the past. Feel your heart expanding. Let go of that which does not serve you. As you inhale, think: I accept myself completely. As you exhale, think: I …

Rudy Simons serves on the Board of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights. He traveled to Iran, for two weeks in March of 2007, with 23 Americans from all over the United States. They were members of the Fellowship for Reconciliation (FFR), an International group, established in 1914, based in New York. FFR is one of the few groups granted visas to Iran. The group, comprised of 14 women and 9 men, studied and read about Iran for months prior to the trip. As there are no American flights to Iran, the group flew in from London. They were provided …

We were pleased to welcome Loretta Johnson, from the Michigan Peace Team, who was with us to discuss her experiences in the Middle East. She presented a slid show depicting several areas she visited during her two peace-keeping visits. She thought it appropriate to start with the city of Bethlehem – the city of Peace. She said the problem today, is that the wall being built by the Israeli’s is being built well within the Palestinian areas, as a way to separate villages and capture more land. As a result, it is very hard for the Palestinian’s to lead the …

After a brief break for refreshments, the group watched the movie, The Reluctant Prophet, by Fr. George Zabelka. This 1988 documentary explores Zabelka’s trips to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan to ask for forgiveness for these terrible crimes. The film included footage of the Pantex Nuclear Bomb plant in Amarillo, Texas, that is producing 5-8 mega bombs per day and transporting 180 bombs every three months for the Trident subs. The film also showed how we knowingly napalmed Dresden. Napalm is immoral and we knew it meant death for all civilians, yet we did it. Without repentance for these actions, there …

The topic for this evening was the Science of Peace, by James O’Day, who spoke at the Department of Peace Conference this past February, in Washington, D.C. He started his discussion with an explanation of the Art of War. He quoted Master Sung – “Without a full understanding of the harms of war it is impossible to manage it.” He went on to talk of the Sirens in the novel Ulysses, who were a loud distraction. Today, the Powers of War (media, 9/11. Alert codes, etc.) are all very loud now. These modern-day “Sirens” capture our attention and know how …
