Multiresonator-Based Chipless Rfid System For Low-Cost Item Tracking, Stevan Preradovic, Isaac Balbin, Nemai Karmakar, Gerhard F. Swiegers

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

A fully passive printable chipless RFID system is presented. The chipless tag uses the amplitude and phase of the spectral signature of a multiresonator circuit and provides I : 1 correspondence of data bits. The tag comprises of a microstrip spiral multiresonator and cross-polarized transmitting and receiving microstrip ultra-wideband disc loaded monopole antennas. The reader antenna is a log periodic dipole antenna with average 5.5-dBi gain. Firstly, a 6-bit chipless tag is designed to encode 000000 and 010101 IDs. Finally, a 35-bit chipless tag based on the same principle is presented. The tag has potentials for low-cost item tagging such …

A Low-Complexity Iterative Channel Estimation And Detection Technique For Doubly Selective Channels, Qinghua Guo, Li Ping, Defeng (David) Huang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we propose a low-complexity iterative joint channel estimation, detection and decoding technique for doubly selective channels. The key to the proposed technique is a segment-by-segment processing strategy under the assumption that the channel is approximately static within a short segment of a data block. Through a virtual zero-padding technique, the proposed segment-by-segment equalization approach inherits the low-complexity advantage of the conventional frequency domain equalization (FDE), but does not need the assistance of guard interval (for cyclic-prefixing or zero-padding), thereby avoiding the spectral and power overheads. Furthermore, we develop a low-complexity bidirectional channel estimator, where the Gaussian message …

The two-component NS2B-NS3 protease of West Nile virus is essential for its replication and presents an attractive target for drug development. Here, we describe protocols for the high-yield expression of stable isotope-labelled samples in vivo and in vitro. We also describe the use of NMR spectroscopy to determine the binding mode of new low molecular mass inhibitors of the West Nile virus NS2B-NS3 protease which were discovered using high-throughput in vitro screening. Binding to the substrate-binding sites S1 and S3 is confirmed by intermolecular NOEs and comparison with the binding mode of a previously identified low molecular mass inhibitor. Our …

Aripiprazole Differentially Affects Mesolimbic And Nigrostriatal Dopaminergic Transmission: Implications For Long-Term Drug Efficacy And Low Extrapyramidal Side-Effects, Xu-Feng Huang, Chao Deng, Mei Han Jan 2009

Aripiprazole Differentially Affects Mesolimbic And Nigrostriatal Dopaminergic Transmission: Implications For Long-Term Drug Efficacy And Low Extrapyramidal Side-Effects, Xu-Feng Huang, Chao Deng, Mei Han

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Aripiprazole has been used effectively to treat schizophrenia in the clinic ; however, its mechanisms ofaction are not clear. This study examined how short- and long-term aripiprazole treatment affects dopaminergic transmission in mesolimbic and nigrostriatal pathways. For comparison, the effects of haloperidol and olanzapine treatment were also examined. Aripiprazole significantly increased D2 receptor mRNA expression and decreased tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNA expression in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) after 1- and 12-wk treatment, but had no effect in substantia nigra (SN) and nucleus accumbens (NAc). Aripiprazole also decreased dopamine transporter (DAT) binding density in NAc (for 1- and 12- wk …

Low Temperature Graphene Growth, Shailesh Kumar, N Mcevoy, T. Lutz, G. Keeley, Nicholas Whiteside, Werner Blau, G. Duesberg Jan 2009

Low Temperature Graphene Growth, Shailesh Kumar, N Mcevoy, T. Lutz, G. Keeley, Nicholas Whiteside, Werner Blau, G. Duesberg

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We demonstrate the growth of graphene films on nickel substrates by chemical vapour deposition using acetylene at temperatures as low as 750 degrees celsius, opening a viable route for its scalable production. Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm defect-free mono and multilayer graphene at and above this temperature, and of defective graphene at lower temperatures. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy performed directly on the films give an indication of graphene flake size, morphology and also the topography on substrate. An unexpected dependence of graphene thickness on precursor dwell time is reported. This together with low temperature growth suggests …

A Comparison Of Factual/Low Context Versus Emotional/High Context Message Appeals: Persuading Chinese Smokers To Ring The Chinese Quitline, Michael Camit, Gary I. Noble, Jennifer Ann Algie Jan 2009

A Comparison Of Factual/Low Context Versus Emotional/High Context Message Appeals: Persuading Chinese Smokers To Ring The Chinese Quitline, Michael Camit, Gary I. Noble, Jennifer Ann Algie

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This study does not support the notion developed from cross cultural advertising literature that members of a particular cultural group will prefer a particular message advertising appeal if it reflects values that are congruent to its culture. An experimental design is applied to examine whether emotional/ high context appeals (n=120) are more persuasive than factual/ low context appeals (n=124) among target groups from collectivist cultural backgrounds. Analysis of Chinese smokers’ pre-and-post intentions to contact the Chinese Quitline after viewing print advertisements determined that there was no difference between the two ad groups’ shift scores. The common use of direct translations …

Low-Complexity Ldpc Coded Bicm-Id With Orthogonal Modulations, S Che, S Tong Jan 2009

Low-Complexity Ldpc Coded Bicm-Id With Orthogonal Modulations, S Che, S Tong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A low-complexity low density parity check (LDPC) coded bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) scheme with orthogonal modulations is proposed. With a novel mapping strategy of coded bits to symbols, the proposed scheme is equivalent to a generalised LDPC code with Hadamard constraints and thus orthogonal demodulation can be merged into the iterative LDPC decoding process, resulting in a simpler implementation and a lower computational complexity.
