Prediction Model Of A Joint Analysis Of Beef Growth And Carcass Quality Traits, H R. Mirzaei, Arunas P. Verbyla, Wayne S. Pitchford

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A joint growth-carcass analysis was conducted to develop equations for predicting carcass quality traits associated with variation in growth path of crossbred cattle. During a four-year period (1994-1997) of the Australian "Southern Crossbreeding Project", mature Hereford cows (r = 581) were mated to 97 sires of Jersey, Wagyu, Angus, Hereford, South Devon, Limousin, and Belgian Blue breeds, resulting in 1141 calves. Data included body weight measurements of steers and heifers from birth until slaughter and four carcass quality traits: hot standard carcass weight, rump fat depth, rib eye muscle area, and intramuscular fat content. The model provides nine outputs: median …

Performance Analysis Of Numerical Integration Methods In The Trajectory Tracking Application Of Redundant Robot Manipulators, Emre Sariyildiz, Hakan Temeltas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Differential kinematic is one of the most important solution methods in robot kinematics. The main advantage of the differential kinematic method is that it can be easily implemented any kind of mechanisms. Also, an accurate and efficient kinematic based trajectory tracking application can be easily implemented by using this method. In differential kinematic method, we use Jacobian as a mapping operator in the velocity space. Inversion of Jacobian matrix transforms the desired trajectory velocities, which are the linear and angular velocities of the end effector, into the joint velocities. The joint velocities are required to be integrated to obtain the …

Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Analysis Of Seismic Ground Response Of Soft Soils In Shanghai, Qingsheng Chen, Guangyun Gao, Junfeng He

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Reduced order bounding surface model was employed to study 3-D seismic ground response of site considering the nonlinearity of soft soils in Shanghai. A nonlinear procedure for response analysis of horizontal layered sites subjected to multidirectional earthquake loading was used to study vertical and horizontal ground responses, respectively, under unidirectional and multidirectional base excitations (Taft). Also, the development of ratio of vertical and horizontal peak acceleration and the effects of the variation of groundwater table on the characteristics of seismic responses were studied. The study results show that the characteristics of vertical seismic ground response are much different from those …

Hierarchical Anatomical Brain Networks For Mci Prediction By Partial Least Square Analysis, Luping Zhou, Yaping Wang, Yang Li, Pew-Thian Yap, Dinggang Shen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Owning to its clinical accessibility, T1-weighted MRI has been extensively studied for the prediction of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The tissue volumes of GM, WM and CSF are the most commonly used measures for MCI and AD prediction. We note that disease-induced structural changes may not happen at isolated spots, but in several inter-related regions. Therefore, in this paper we propose to directly extract the inter-region connectivity based features for MCI prediction. This involves constructing a brain network for each subject, with each node representing an ROI and each edge representing regional interactions. This network is …

Reliability Analysis Of Strain-Softening Slopes, Robin N. Chowdhury, Gautam Bhattacharya Jan 2011

Reliability Analysis Of Strain-Softening Slopes, Robin N. Chowdhury, Gautam Bhattacharya

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Slope reliability must be considered in the context of a variety of factors which control or influence stability or the balance between disturbing and resisting forces. The problems of slope stability are varied, ranging from fi rst-time failures to reactivated landslides and from minor, localized slope movements to catastrophic events. Reliability analysis within a probabilistic framework offers a very powerful tool for taking into consideration the variability of key geotechnical parameters as well as other uncertainties. In this paper, the progressive decrease in shear strength along potential slip surfaces is considered in terms of a residual factor treated as one …

Dynamic Response Analysis Of The Rotating Blade Of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine, Xiong Liu, Xianmin Zhang, Gangqiang Li, Yan Chen, Zhiquan Ye

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a dynamic response analysis of the blade of horizontal axis wind turbines using finite element method. The blade is treated as a cantilever and modeled with two-node beam element. The blade element-momentum theory is applied to calculate the aerodynamic loads. Dynamic inflow and dynamic stall are taken into account to reflect the transient aerodynamics. The centrifugal stiffening is introduced to consider the restoring effects of centrifugal force. An aerodynamic damping model is presented for calculating the overall damping ratio instantaneously during time-domain simulation. The structural dynamic equation is solved using Newmark method and the overall dynamic response …

Statistical Analysis Of Overvoltages Due To The Energisation Of A 132 Kv Underground Cable, M Z. Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Analysis by means of simulation studies is essential for providing useful information to distribution engineers and researchers regarding high frequency switching transients in cable systems. The behaviour of transients due to switching is strongly dependent on the pole closing span of the circuit breaker and also the closing angle of the power frequency voltage. This behaviour requires the study of overvoltage magnitude distributions to be carried out using a statistical approach. This paper presents an analysis of overvoltage sensitivity due to circuit breaker operations when energising an unloaded 132 kV underground cable system. Based on two approaches, the overvoltage values …

Survey Response As Organisational Behaviour: An Analysis Of The Annual Enterprise Survey, 2003-2007, Walter R. Davis, Nathaniel Pihama Jan 2009

Survey Response As Organisational Behaviour: An Analysis Of The Annual Enterprise Survey, 2003-2007, Walter R. Davis, Nathaniel Pihama

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Non-response is a matter of great concern to national statistical offices and a key issue for any survey because it can introduce bias to survey estimation. However, in this presentation, we focus on a business's decision to participate in a survey as an example of organisational behaviour and draw on basic organisational theory to explain why businesses may not respond to surveys (eg Tomaskovic-Devey et al 1994). The data are drawn from the Statistics New Zealand Respondent Management System, which links the response history of individual businesses in all Statistics NZ surveys with information from the Statistics NZ Business Frame. …

Numerical Analysis Of Roll Deflection For Sendzimir Mill, H L. Yu, X H. Liu, G T. Lee, X W. Li, H D. Park

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The present work introduces a new type of numerical analyzing method: the contact element method with two relative coordinates (CEM). The main characteristic of the procedure is elements meshing on the basis of the contact length between objects and that each element has two relative coordinates. The ordinary expression of this procedure is DX[CXY(i)]=D Y[CYX(i)]. Through this method, the CEM function of the 20-high Sendzimir mill and the deflection function expression of every roll are obtained. A computational software SM4SM for the Sendzimir mill has been developed, by which the deflection condition of rolls S, O, I, and A can …

Regularized Discriminative Direction For Shape Difference Analysis, Luping Zhou, Richard Hartley, Lei Wang, Paulette Lieby, Nick Barnes Jan 2008

Regularized Discriminative Direction For Shape Difference Analysis, Luping Zhou, Richard Hartley, Lei Wang, Paulette Lieby, Nick Barnes

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The "discriminative direction" has been proven useful to re- veal the subtle difference between two anatomical shape classes. When a shape moves along this direction, its deformation will best manifest the class difference detected by a kernel classifier. However, we observe that such a direction cannot maintain a shape's "anatomical" correctness, in- troducing spurious difference. To overcome this drawback, we develop a regularized discriminative direction by requiring a shape to conform to its population distribution when it deforms along the discriminative direction. Instead of iterative optimization, an analytic solution is pro- vided to directly work out this direction. Experimental study …

Evolution Analysis Of Low-Cost Iterative Equalization In Coded Linear Systems With Cyclic Prefixes, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo, Xiaodong Wang, Li Ping

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper is concerned with the low-cost iterative equalization/detection principles for coded linear systems with cyclic prefixes. Turbo frequency-domain-equalization (FDE) is applied to systems that may contain the joint effect of multiple-access interference (MAI), cross-antenna interference (CAI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI). We develop an SNK-variance evolution technique for the performance evaluation of the proposed systems. Numerical results in various channel environments demonstrate excellent agreement between the predicted and simulated system performance. © 2008 IEEE.

Performance Analysis Of Ofdm-Idma Systems With Peak-Power Limitation, Jun Tong, Qinghua Guo, Li Ping Jan 2008

Performance Analysis Of Ofdm-Idma Systems With Peak-Power Limitation, Jun Tong, Qinghua Guo, Li Ping

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper is concerned with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing interleave-division multiple-access (OFDM-IDMA) systems over frequency-selective fading channels. Deliberate clipping is applied to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of each user's transmitted signal. An iterative multiuser detection (MUD) technique is developed to recover the performance loss due to clipping. A semi-analytical signal-to- noise ratio (SNR) evolution technique is proposed, which can provide quick and accurate prediction of the iterative MUD performance. Numerical results show that the performance of OFDM-IDMA is not sensitive to the frequency selectivity of channels, and OFDM-IDMA is more power-efficient than other alternative multi-carrier transmission techniques. © 2008 …

An Analysis Of The Criteria For Evaluating Adequate Theories Of Computation, Nir Fresco Jan 2008

An Analysis Of The Criteria For Evaluating Adequate Theories Of Computation, Nir Fresco

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper deals with the question: What are the criteria that an adequate theory of computation has to meet? (1) Smith's answer: it has to meet the empirical criterion (i.e. doing justice to computational practice), the conceptual criterion (i.e. explaining all the underlying concepts) and the cognitive criterion (i.e. providing solid grounds for computationalism). (2) Piccinini's answer: it has to meet the objectivity criterion (i.e. identifying computation as a matter of fact), the explanation criterion (i.e. explaining the computer's behaviour), the right things compute criterion, the miscomputation criterion (i.e. accounting for malfunctions), the taxonomy criterion (i.e. distinguishing between different classes …

Performance Analysis Of Multi-Ary Systems With Iterative Linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error Detection, Li Ping, Jun Tong, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo Jan 2008

Performance Analysis Of Multi-Ary Systems With Iterative Linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error Detection, Li Ping, Jun Tong, Xiaojun Yuan, Qinghua Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper is concerned with coded multi-ary systems over linear channels. Based on a semi-analytical evolution technique, the impact of signaling schemes on the performance of low-cost iterative linear minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) detection is studied. It is shown that superposition coded modulation (SCM) maximizes the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of LMMSE detectors. Consequently, SCM may potentially outperform other conventional signaling schemes when LMMSE detectors are used. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical analysis. © 2008 IEEE.

Strategic Analysis Adaptation Assessment: An Alternative To The Storyline Scenario, Susan Krumdieck, Mohammed Imroz Sohel Jan 2007

Strategic Analysis Adaptation Assessment: An Alternative To The Storyline Scenario, Susan Krumdieck, Mohammed Imroz Sohel

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Scenarios of future trends are widely used by government and international agencies to inform decision-making. While story line scenarios may be useful for business or government thinking, they are not effective at informing engineering research, innovation and design, and add very little to the understanding of sustainability. This paper presents a strategic analysis approach to complex systems, which relies on identification of risks to important activities and wellbeing. This method mimics the actual processes of anthropogenic continuity, where people explore, experiment, learn from success and mistakes, and adapt and evolve. The method is applied to the case study of transportation …

Security Analysis Of Two Ultra-Lightweight Rfid Authentication Protocols, Tieyan Li, Guilin Wang Jan 2007

Security Analysis Of Two Ultra-Lightweight Rfid Authentication Protocols, Tieyan Li, Guilin Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we analyze the security vulnerabilities of two ultra-lightweight RFID mutual authentication protocols: LMAP and M2AP, which are recently proposed by Peris-Lopez et al.We identify two e®ective attacks, namely De-synchronization attack and Full-disclosure attack, against their protocols. The former attack can break the synchro- nization between the RFID reader and the tag in a single protocol run so that they can not authenticate each other in any following protocol runs. The latter attack can disclose all the secret information stored on a tag by interrogating the tag multiple times. Thus it compromises the tag completely. Moreover, we point …

Gait Analysis Of Low-Cost Flexible-Shank Transtibial Prostheses, Winson Lee, Ming Zhang, Peggy Chan, David A. Boone Jan 2006

Gait Analysis Of Low-Cost Flexible-Shank Transtibial Prostheses, Winson Lee, Ming Zhang, Peggy Chan, David A. Boone

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The latest lower-limb prosthetic designs have been incorporated with dynamic elastic response (DER) components to enhance prosthesis flexibility, which are suggested to be beneficial to gait. Although DER prosthetic. feet are preferred by most transtibial amputees and their benefits to gait are supported by some biomechanical studies, many are still utilizing the simple conventional solid ankle cushioned heel (SACH) designs because of the lower cost. The monolimb, a transtibial prosthesis with the socket and the shank molded from a single piece of thermoplastic material, perhaps is an alternative to DER feet for providing flexibility at the shank. In addition to …

Explicit Dynamic Fem Analysis Of Multipass Vertical-Horizontal Rolling, Hai-Liang Yu, Xiang-Hua Liu, Xian-Ming Zhao, Di Wu, Y Kusaba

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Three passes of plate rolling during vertical-horizontal rolling process are simulated with explicit dynamic finite element method and updating geometric method. The equivalent strain and stress fields, and shape change at the head and tail of slab during rolling are obtained. The calculated result of the shape at the head and tail of slab is in good agreement with the measured one. The explicit dynamic finite element method and updating geometric method can be used effectively to analyze the multipass vertical-horizontal (V-H) rolling process. © 2006 Central Iron and Steel Research Institute.

Bayesian Analysis For Penalized Spline Regression Using Winbugs, Ciprian Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, M. P. Wand Jan 2005

Bayesian Analysis For Penalized Spline Regression Using Winbugs, Ciprian Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, M. P. Wand

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Penalized splines can be viewed as BLUPs in a mixed model framework, which allows the use of mixed model software for smoothing. Thus, software originally developed for Bayesian analysis of mixed models can be used for penalized spline regression. Bayesian inference for nonparametric models enjoys the flexibility of nonparametric models and the exact inference provided by the Bayesian inferential machinery. This paper provides a simple, yet comprehensive, set of programs for the implementation of nonparametric Bayesian analysis in WinBUGS. Good mixing properties of the MCMC chains are obtained by using low-rank thin-plate splines, while simulation times per iteration are reduced …

Finite-Element Analysis To Determine Effect Of Monolimb Flexibility On Structural Strength And Interaction Between Residual Limb And Prosthetic Socket, Winson Lee, Ming Zhang, David A. Boone, Bill Contoyannis Jan 2004

Finite-Element Analysis To Determine Effect Of Monolimb Flexibility On Structural Strength And Interaction Between Residual Limb And Prosthetic Socket, Winson Lee, Ming Zhang, David A. Boone, Bill Contoyannis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Monolimb refers to a kind of transtibial prostheses having the socket and shank molded into one piece of thermoplastic material. One of its characteristics is that the shank is made of a material that can deform during walking, which can simulate ankle joint motion to some extent. Changes in shank geometry can alter the stress distribution within the monolimb and at the residual limb-socket interface and, respectively, affect the deformability and structural integrity of the prosthesis and comfort perceived by amputees. This paper describes the development of a finite-element model for the study of the structural behavior of monolimbs with …

Genomic DNAs prepared from 168 isolates of Escherichia coli 0157:H7 were analyzed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms on Southern blots probed with bacteriophage A DNA. The isolates analyzed included strains from a recent large multistate outbreak of E. coli 0157:H7 infection associated with consumption of poorly cooked beef in restaurants, a day-care center cluster, and temporally and geographically unrelated isolates. E. coli 0157:H7 isolates recovered from the incriminated meat and from 61 (96.8%) of 63 patients from Washington and Nevada possessed identical A restriction fragment length patterns. The A restriction fragment length polymorphisms observed in 11 (91.7%) of 12 day-care …

Markov Pyramid Models In Image Analysis, Jennifer L. Davidson, Noel A. Cressie Jan 1993

Markov Pyramid Models In Image Analysis, Jennifer L. Davidson, Noel A. Cressie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of statistical pattern recognition techniques in image processing has led to simplifying assumptions on the statistical interdependence of the pixel value of an image, which allow theoretical analysis and/or computational implementation to be achieved. For instance, the assumption of statistical independence of the values or that their joint distributions are multivariate normal, simplifies the analysis enormously. However, these results are very limiting in representing models for data, and do not allow for analysis of arbitrary spatial dependencies, in the data. One method for modeling two-dimensional data on a lattice array has been developed by Abend et al. called …

The Response To Selection Of Different Procedures For The Analysis Of Early Generation Variety Trials, Brian R. Cullis, A. C. Gleeson, F. M. Thomson Jan 1992

The Response To Selection Of Different Procedures For The Analysis Of Early Generation Variety Trials, Brian R. Cullis, A. C. Gleeson, F. M. Thomson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A simulation study was conducted to determine the relative response to selection of a one-dimensional spatial analysis of field experiments (SAFE) specifically adapted for early generation trials. The primary purpose of the analysis in these trials is to obtain accurate estimates of genotypic effects of the unreplicated test lines by adjusting for local variation, using either the yields of all neighbouring plots or the yields of neighbouring plots of (replicated) check varieties. The response to selection of the SAFE analysis, relative to the use of unadjusted yields of test line plots, was consistently greater than the relative response to selection …

Efficiency Of Neighbour Analysis For Replicated Variety Trials In Australia, Brian R. Cullis, A. C. Gleeson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Use of a one-dimensional neighbour method of analysis in 1019 variety trials of a range of crops conducted by plant breeders in four states of Australia in 1985–87 resulted in an average reduction of 42% in variances of varietal yield differences compared with conventional randomized complete block analysis. Of these trials, 219 were designed as square, rectangular or generalized lattices and the average reduction in variances of varietal yields with incomplete block analysis and recovery of interblock information was 33%. The results emphasized that plots should be wide enough to avoid interplot competition, and that neighbour analysis is of most …
