“Part campaign diary, part how-to guide, this book is the story of the 2022 congressional campaign of University of Tennessee, Knoxville, journalism professor Mark Harmon. Harmon attempted something no East Tennessee Democrat has done since William Montgomery Churchwell in 1855—represent the Knoxville area in Congress. Harmon had scored an upset in a 2006 bid for Knox County Commissioner and hoped to do so again against the deep-pocketed Republican incumbent, Congressman Tim Burchett. With a volunteer campaign manager and treasurer, and in-kind donations of photography and video services, Harmon relied heavily on local presence at community events in a vigorous ground …
Purpose Advertising And The Credibility Gap, Tyler Milfeld, Eric Haley
Purpose Advertising And The Credibility Gap, Tyler Milfeld, Eric Haley
Purpose Project
One approach to purpose advertising is brand activism—taking a stand on a sociopolitical issue. This research compares divergent perspectives on whether and how brand activism influences brand attitudes and purchase intentions. Results from three studies, in which real-world brands and messages were used, identify a credibility gap between brands with a reputation for activism (established activist brands) and those without a reputation (emergent activist brands). Findings also reveal how personal issue knowledge moderates the credibility gap. Among other contributions, this research creates a new brand typology in the brand activism arena and empirically demonstrates a more favorable effect for established …

In 2016, the citizens of Knoxville, Tennessee, joined in a community reading program called the Big Read. Knoxvillians read Ernest Gaines's book A Lesson Before Dying, and community groups hosted a series of lectures, book discussions, film screenings, and dramatic performances that immersed the community in a five-week conversation on racism.
This book of essays is the University of Tennessee Libraries' contribution to Knoxville's Big Read. The Libraries put out a community-wide call for written responses to A Lesson Before Dying and was richly rewarded with the thoughtful and heartfelt commentaries gathered here.

The Papers Of Andrew Jackson: Volume V, 1821-1824, Andrew Jackson
The Papers of Andrew Jackson
This fifth volume of The Papers of Andrew Jackson documents Jackson’s retirement from the military in 1821 and his emergence as the leading presidential candidate in 1824, winning a plurality of popular and electoral votes over John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, William H. Crawford, and John C. Calhoun. In the interim, he served a troublesome few months as governor of Florida and thereafter enjoyed a brief retirement at the Hermitage before the Tennessee legislature called him again into service as United States senator.
The tension between Jackson’s longing for retirement and his dedication to public service forms the main theme …

The Papers Of Andrew Jackson: Volume Iv, 1816-1820, Andrew Jackson
The Papers of Andrew Jackson
The fourth volume of The Papers of Andrew Jackson, covering the five-year period from 1816 through 1820, documents Jackson’s role as a major general in the United States Army during James Monroe’s first term as president. Already in his early fifties, the Hero of New Orleans had served his country for more than thirty years and, as he repeatedly professed, longed to leave public life.
In general, the two themes of service and honor dominated Jackson’s career and actions and precluded retirement. As the documents reveal, Jackson’s military duties mainly involved establishing and keeping the peace between Indians and …

The Papers Of Andrew Jackson: Volume I, 1770-1803, Andrew Jackson
The Papers of Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, is an American folk hero. His strong personality and natural gift for leadership contributed to his wide influence throughout his lifetime. Jackson was known to be quarrelsome, honest, loyal, and self-willed, and the examination of his early years as documented in this volume provides insight into his career before he became a military and national hero.
During these years Jackson developed into a local and statewide leader of importance. His career as an attorney prospered and he became successively a member of the Tennessee Constitutional Convention, the first congressman from Tennessee, and …
