Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items
This collection was received in June 2008 in bound notebooks from Karen A. White, the Regional Chancellor of USF St. Petersburg at the time and an accomplished violinist. Under the byline Mary Nic Shenk, Dodd wrote regular reviews of operas and musical performances in the St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times) beginning in the early 1960s. This donation includes articles and clippings removed from bound notebooks collected by Shenk, covering the period from the early 1960s forward into the 1980s. Some clippings reside in clear plastic folders; others are glued onto white paper. Dodd graduated from the Eastman School …

Standardization Of Questions In Rare Disease Registries: The Prism Library Project, Rachel L. Richesson, Denise Shereff, James E. Andrews
School of Information Faculty Publications
Background: Patient registries are often a helpful first step in estimating the impact and understanding the etiology of rare diseases - both requisites for the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics. The value and utility of patient registries rely on the use of both well-constructed structured research questions and relevant answer sets accompanying them. There are currently no clear standards or specifications for developing registry questions, and there are no banks of existing questions to support registry developers.
Objective: This paper introduces the [Rare Disease] PRISM (Patient Registry Item Specifications and Metadata for Rare Disease) project, a library of standardized …

W. R. "Butch" Evans Collection Of Pre-Columbian Surface Artifacts : Catalogue Of Accessions In Original Order, Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. Special Collections And University Archives., James Anthony Schnur, W. R. (Butch) Evans, Samantha Musella, Sylvia Martinez Mullenix
Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items
This collection includes nearly 800 items donated by W.R. “Butch” Evans in summer 2011. Evans, a resident of Pinellas County, collected the artifacts, chert, pottery sherds, lithic tools, shell tools, and other items while exploring coastal areas and estuaries of Florida. He located “surface finds,” items providing evidence of pre-Columbian settlements that appeared along beaches, river beds and shorelines, and other similar areas of Florida. Out of respect for those middens and mounds remaining, Evans did not violate or desecrate historical sites while collecting these materials. This catalog represents a preliminary inventory of the materials in the W.R. “Butch” Evans …

Functionalities Of Web Archives, Jinfang Niu
Functionalities Of Web Archives, Jinfang Niu
School of Information Faculty Publications
The functionalities that are important to the users of web archives range from basic searching and browsing to advanced personalized and customized services, data mining, and website reconstruction. The author examined ten of the most established English language web archives to determine which functionalities each of the archives supported, and how they compared. A functionality checklist was designed, based on use cases created by the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC), and the findings of two related user studies. The functionality review was conducted, along with a comprehensive literature review of web archiving methods, in preparation for the development of a …

An Overview Of Web Archiving, Jinfang Niu
School of Information Faculty Publications
This overview is a study of the methods used at a variety of universities, and international government libraries and archives, to select, acquire, describe and access web resources for their archives. Creating a web archive presents many challenges, and library and information schools should ensure that instruction in web archiving methods and skills is made part of their curricula, to help future practitioners meet those challenges. In preparation for developing a web archiving course, the author conducted a comprehensive literature review. The findings are reported in this paper, along with the author's views on some of the methods in use, …

The Global Social Forum Rhizome: A Theoretical Framework, Peter N. Funke
The Global Social Forum Rhizome: A Theoretical Framework, Peter N. Funke
Government and International Affairs Faculty Publications
This work draws on Deleuze and Guattari's image of the ‘rhizome’ to develop a framework for mapping and understanding the global social forum process and its implications for the broader global left. The image of the rhizome is insightful for analytically accentuating the nature and workings, as well as the challenges and contemporary shortcomings, of the social forum process and more generally the broader global movement(s). Thriving on multiplicity and thus lacking a dominant core or main axis, the social forum-as-rhizome emphasizes the multi-connectivity and heterogeneity of this process, which has no central actor, issue, strategy, or ideology, beyond the …

The present study used a coordinated analyses approach to examine the association of physical activity and cognitive change in four longitudinal studies. A series of multilevel growth models with physical activity included both as a fixed (between-person) and time-varying (within-person) predictor of four domains of cognitive function (reasoning, memory, fluency, and semantic knowledge) was used. Baseline physical activity predicted fluency, reasoning and memory in two studies. However, there was a consistent pattern of positive relationships between time-specific changes in physical activity and time-specific changes in cognition, controlling for expected linear trajectories over time, across all four studies. This pattern was …
