Meeting Strategic Communication Goals Through A Sustainable Library Newsletter, Camielle Crampsie, Karla Morris

Libraries face a significant challenge in keeping users, and sometimes even
their own employees, informed and up-to-date about their ever-changing services and resources. A library e-newsletter is one way of effectively communicating updates to a large number of people on a regular basis, serving as both an internal and external communication tool. To do this, it is important to establish a collaborative model that is sustainable, can be assessed, and meets readership needs. Aligning the newsletter with the library’s mission and strategic plan is an effective approach for communications with an academic library community.

INTRODUCTION: When U.S. News & World Report announced that it would rank law schools’ scholarly impact, U.S. News asked law schools to work with HeinOnline, a legal database, to ensure the accuracy of the database-created faculty author profiles because they would be using Hein’s database to gather citation metrics to measure scholarly impact. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: This practice article describes a project at UNC Chapel Hill in the law library to ensure that their faculty publications were included in HeinOnline’s database and that HeinOnline Author Profiles were accurate. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is far reaching, with devastating effects on individuals, communities, and societies across the world. People with chronic health conditions may be at greater risk of contracting or experiencing complications from COVID-19. In addition to illness or death for those who contract the virus, the physical distancing required to flatten the curve of new cases is having a negative impact on the economy, the effects of which intersect with mental health and other existing health concerns, thus affecting marginalized communities. Academic Librarian Publishing Productivity: An Analysis Of Skills And Behaviors Leading To Success, Camielle Crampsie, Tina Neville, Deborah B. Henry

Scholarly publishing continues to be a prominent expectation for many academic librarians. This survey explores characteristics, behaviors, motivations, institutional supports, and educational opportunities that help library practitioners become successful authors. It also looks at perceived confidence in research skills of both novice and experienced librarians. Many librarians show confidence in research activities related to their overall job assignments (literature searching, writing, and such) but find more sophisticated research skills, such as statistical analysis, more challenging. Findings indicate that having additional graduate research experience beyond the library degree, time-management skills, and collaboration with other researchers may provide useful benefits.

Exploring Data Literacy Via A Librarian-Faculty Learning Community: A Case Study, Theresa G. Burress, Emily Z. Mann, Tina Neville

Faculty learning communities (FLCs) are year-long professional development opportunities available at many higher education institutions in the United States. While the literature reflects some librarian engagement with FLCs, it seems limited primarily to areas of traditional librarian expertise such as information literacy and outreach. This article describes a case study of a librarian-facilitated FLC focused on data literacy, which resulted in the development of a teaching toolkit, library-led data literacy instruction, and ongoing collaborations between librarians and faculty. The FLC structure proved to be a valuable framework that facilitated collaborative learning in topics relevant to both disciplinary faculty and librarians. …

Approximately 22% of HIV diagnoses in 2015 occurred among youth aged 13–24. Much is known about the risk factors and psychopathology present in youth living with HIV (YLWH), however, relatively little is known about resiliency in this population. The current study sought to assess factors related to resilience and vulnerability among YLWH as well as the impact of psychosocial factors on these constructs using existing clinical data from an integrated care clinic serving YLWH in the southeastern United States. From Journal Selection To Open Access: Practices Among Academic Librarian Scholars, Tina Neville, Camielle Crampsie

In this study, researchers surveyed academic librarians about their open access publishing practices. This analysis explores approaches to journal selection, awareness of open access options, and self-archiving practices. Fifty percent of the librarians in this study considered free open access when selecting a potential journal for publication, but a journal's fit to the topic and peer review were higher priorities. Findings indicate that, although many librarians publish in open access journals or take advantage of institutional repositories, there are still barriers to publishing in open access journals, including article processing charges, the tenure and promotion culture, and uncertainty around intellectual …

Visitors to public science festivals have a tremendous amount of free choice to decide how to navigate through the festival, as well as when, where, and how long to stop at an exhibit. This study examines how elementary-aged children individually or collaboratively engaged with festival exhibits at a public science festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. Although many exhibit activities are designed to appeal to children, no research has been done with regard to child engagement with one-day, outdoor science festivals, such as this one. Engagement can be measured by unobtrusive observation of the behavior and interactions of children. Factors that …

Preserving, Digitizing, And Sustaining The Weekly Challenger, A Local African-American Newspaper., Catherine A. Cardwell, Alexandra Curran

A local newspaper in Saint Petersburg, Florida, The Weekly Challenger was established in 1967 with the goal of documenting and sharing information about the African-American community at a time when other local news outlets largely ignored it. Through a special legislative appropriation from the State of Florida, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library at the University of South Florida Saint Petersburg received funding to preserve, digitize, and sustain the newspaper. In this article, the authors discuss the steps taken to build the repository for the newspaper’s print and electronic archives, including photographs and videotaped interviews with a long-time publisher. Auditory cognitive training (ACT) improves attention in older adults; however, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are still unknown. The present study examined the effects of ACT on the P3b event-related potential reflecting attention allocation (amplitude) and speed of processing (latency) during stimulus categorization and the P1-N1-P2 complex reflecting perceptual processing (amplitude and latency). Participants completed an auditory oddball task before and after 10 weeks of ACT (n = 9) or a no contact control period (n = 15). Parietal P3b amplitudes to oddball stimuli decreased at post-test in the trained group as compared to those …

Career Plateauing Among Senior Librarians., Tina M. Neville, Deborah B. Henry

Using an online survey and semi-structured interviews, senior academic librarians were asked to reflect on the factors that keep them personally fulfilled and on how they remain motivated to make positive contributions to their organization. Motivations include esteem of colleagues and supervisors, variety in their work, salary, opportunities to learn new skills, increasing responsibility, and working with students and faculty. 59% percent of the survey respondents ranked their job satisfaction at 8 (on a scale of 1—10, with 10 the most satisfied). Using Bardwick’s definitions of plateauing, 60% of the 20 librarians interviewed did not feel that they were content-plateaued.

Current research shows that musical training enhances neural and behavioral auditory skills, even in as little as 20 minutes to 5 weeks of instruction (Barrett, Ashley, Strait, & Kraus, 2013; Pantev & Herholz, 2011). A computer-based music training program may be an innovative tool for improving auditory perception and listening skills. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of a computer-based music training program on auditory processing abilities. Participants included 20 young adults with hearing within normal limits and no history of musical training, defined as private lessons or band/orchestra/chorus class for two years or more. …

Analyzing The Data Management Environment In A Master's-Level Institution., Anthony Stamatoplos, Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

The data management environments at research-intensive institutions have been studied extensively. Few studies, however, have assessed the environments at institutions that are not classified as research-intensive, where scholarship and obtaining external funding is still highly encouraged. Using results from semi-structured interviews with faculty from an array of disciplines, the authors describe the research processes and data concerns at a Master's-level institution. A comparison of the results illustrate that, at least at this institution, faculty face very similar issues as those identified at research-intensive organizations and many of the same practices and services could be implemented on a smaller scale.

Student-run Facebook groups offer librarians a new means of interacting with students in their native digital domain. Facebook groups, a service launched in 2010 enables university students to create a virtual forum to discuss their concerns, issues, and promote events. While still a relatively new feature, these groups are increasingly being utilized by students in universities and colleges throughout North America. Little research has been done on these groups and how they may be changing the way that students interact with each other and with their university on social media. Sex Trafficking Of Girls: How Sex Traffickers Exploit Youth And System Vulnerabilities, Joan Reid

Sex traffickers often prey on vulnerability and employ manipulative tactics to create opportunity for exploitation. A review of 93 cases of sexually exploited girls and interviews with their case managers revealed that in approximately half of these cases exploitation in sex trafficking occurred after the girls had contact with child protective services and/or they had been placed in state care. The current study examined the links between the schemes and strategies of sex traffickers and various factors such as victim and situational characteristics observed in cases involving foster girls.
