Authority control is an important part of cataloging since it helps provide consistent access to names, titles, subjects, and genre/forms. There are a variety of methods for providing authority control, ranging from manual, time-consuming processes to automated processes. However, the automated processes often seem out of reach for small libraries when it comes to using a pricey vendor or needing a cataloger with particular expertise. Providing staff access to policies and procedures is vital to keeping Technical Services, and the rest of the library system, functioning smoothly. As staff members come and go, good documentation aids training and ensures continuity. The challenge is finding a way to make important resources available to all staff, while keeping it easy to use and up to date.

Rda Adoption In U.S. Public Libraries, Sevim Mccutcheon

This study surveyed the state of knowledge about, and adoption of, RDA among American public library catalogers. In 2017 an online survey request was e-mailed to 4000 public libraries for the person most responsible for cataloging. Over 300 libraries responded. Data collected nationally included geographic location, education level, training history and needs, library size and budget. Evidence points to demographic factors having a strong influence on levels of RDA knowledge, with a dramatic urban/rural divide. While a majority of catalogers know about RDA, their working knowledge about it differs substantially depending on whether they work in rural or urban library …

When vinegar syndrome threatened to destroy microfilm containing a vast trove of history, Murray State University Libraries quickly responded. The microfilm--which included one of the broadest collections of local and regional newspapers in the Jackson Purchase area, as well as birth, marriage, and death certificates from Calloway and surrounding counties--was sent to a commercial vendor for digitization with the intention of archiving and making the contents accessible through the institutional repository, Digital Commons. Today, that microfilm is transitioning from moldering in closed stacks to becoming widely accessible to a global pool of researchers.

Creating An E-Textbook Collection At An Online University Library, Jennifer Howard

In response to the textbook affordability problem, multiple institutions have implemented or expanded on-campus textbook reserve programs, in order to provide no-cost access for students. For a library at an online university, an e-textbook collection can fulfill the same purpose.

In 2018, our library discussed and implemented a program to purchase and make available e-textbooks for our students. Challenges included availability of titles, simultaneous user restrictions, integration with existing e-reserves, and advertising the service to ensure faculty and student awareness. Beginning Fall term 2018, we were able to provide at least one textbook for over 50% of courses.

As part of his vision for a more student-oriented campus, in Fall 2017, our new provost began projects to reallocate some of the square footage in the library for classrooms, student services such as the writing center, and a café. To make way for this reallocation, the project also included the closure of the curriculum library housed in another building. These projects coupled with a relatively short time frame created an interesting set of challenges for the library administration and staff, including rethinking collections and work spaces for the library. Does management language cohesion in earnings conference calls matter to the capital market? As a part of the research on the above question, and taking advantage of the modern IT technologies, this project:

• harvested 115,882 earnings conference call transcripts from SeekingAlpha.com
• parsed and structured 89,988 transcripts using regular expressions in Stata
• analyzed 179,976 text files using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), which
• saved almost 2 years (675 days) of the project time

While most of us depend on programs like Google Maps to help us navigate the world, it barely scratches the surface of the diverse world of web mapping. In this introductory workshop, participants will learn about web mapping platforms, how digital maps are typically used, different visualization techniques for engaging users, and tips for searching and integrating data to create finished maps. A variety of web-based tools will be discussed, including Carto and OpenStreetMap. Participants will be guided through a tutorial that teaches them the basics of web mapping. To produce a compelling and attractive map, it is necessary to have quality data. However, finding quality data and using it to prepare maps can be quite challenging. This workshop will begin with a review of different types of spatial data, how to access it, and strategies for understanding and organizing it. We will then focus on creating our own data by georeferencing scanned paper maps. Georeferencing involves assigning geographic coordinates to images (e.g., maps, aerial photos) that lack a defined coordinate system. This poster presents the findings from my Community Resource Audit in LIS 601, which focused on teen library users. During my research, I found that teens usually seek information on the following topics: Health, Career Information, Homework Help, Reading Material, News, and General Curiosity. Along with addressing these needs, my presentation will also discuss barriers to teen access, including reasons why they might choose not to seek information. The Special Collections Research Center's education program offers students across all departments and disciplines the opportunity to learn from primary sources. By demystifying the research process, students are provided with powerful learning opportunities. As the Education Archivist Graduate Assistant, I plan and create activities for students visiting the SCRC to facilitate student learning and improve information literacy. This fast-growing, innovative program reached 2,038 students during the 2015-2016 academic year, and this is only one of many pieces of evidence pointing to the program's success.
