Creating And Hosting Student-Run Research Journals: A Case Study, Adrian K. Ho

Adrian K. Ho

This case study aims to examine an academic library’s roles in facilitating the creation and hosting of open access student-run research journals. In addition to providing an online platform to host the journals, the library acquaints students with scholarly publishing, assists them in securing various resources available on campus, and offers support for content management. Who Is Responsible For Data? An Exploratory Study Of Data Authorship, Ownership, And Responsibility, Jillian Wallis, Christine Borgman Oct 2011

Who Is Responsible For Data? An Exploratory Study Of Data Authorship, Ownership, And Responsibility, Jillian Wallis, Christine Borgman

Christine L. Borgman

Data repositories rely on the deposit of materials from the communities they serve, forming a chain of stakeholders from the data creator to the repository and data user. Top-down policies that describe the responsibilities of the depositing scientists and other stakeholders are drafted accordingly. But we see very little deposit of scientific data beyond the Big Sciences or communities for whom deposit is required by publications. As part of an ongoing data practices study, we asked scientific researchers about who would be responsible for the data collected. It is clear that researchers are not talking about who is responsible for …

The Influence Of Effects And Phenomena On Citations: A Comparative Analysis Of Four Citation Perspectives, Qiang Wu, Dietmar Wolfram Jul 2011

The Influence Of Effects And Phenomena On Citations: A Comparative Analysis Of Four Citation Perspectives, Qiang Wu, Dietmar Wolfram

Dietmar Wolfram

This article defines different perspectives for citations and introduces four concepts: Self-expected Citations, Received Citations, Expected Citations, and Deserved Citations. When comparing permutations of these four classes of perspectives, there are up to 145 kinds of equality/inequality relations. From these numerous relations, we analyze the difference between the Matthew Effect and the Matthew Phenomenon. We provide a precise definition and point out that many previous empirical research studies on the Matthew Effect based on citations belong primarily to the Matthew Phenomenon, and not the true meaning of the Matthew Effect. Due to the difficulty in determining the Deserved Citations, the …

Chinwe Veronica Anunobi Dr

The exponential population increase in the Country is not without consequential effect on secondary schoolleavers jostling for limited admission space in Nigerian institutions of higher learning. Every academic year, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), rolls out frightening number of candidates desiring to enter Nigerian universities. These universities have limited resources to admit up to fifty percent of the candidates. The result is frustrated secondary school leavers who continue to apply yearly for admission. Making Decisions: Using Electronic Data Collection To Re-Envision Reference Services At The Usf Tampa Libraries, Lily Todorinova, Barbara Lewis, Andy Huse, Matt Torrence

Lily Todorinova

Declining reference statistics, diminishing human resources, and the desire to be more proactive and embedded in academic depart- ments, prompted the University of South Florida Library to create a taskforce for re-envisioning reference services. The taskforce was charged with examining the staffing patterns at the desk and developing recommendations to give librarians greater flexibility and to better respond to the information-seeking needs of users. These recommendations were based on statistics of desk usage, collected with the newly adapted online tool Desk Tracker, and structured interviews with library administrators. The taskforce was interested in how these stakeholders use quantitative data in …
