What Impact Do Academic Libraries Have On Teaching And Learning? A Review Of The Literature And Preliminary Taxonomy Of Standards, Rachel A. Fleming-May, Crystal Sherline

Rachel A. Fleming-May

In recent years a darkening financial horizon has intensified the focus on accountability for academic institutions of and their libraries.1-2 Increasingly, funders are seeking evidence of the financial return on these investments, or, in its absence, proof of non-monetary “value.” Identifying these “elusive”3 models for measuring the effectiveness of library resources and service is of concern to practitioners and the organizations that represent them. The Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL) commitment to identifying varied indicators of quality is evident in the New Measures Initiative and the development of instruments like LibQUAL+®,4 and the ACRL’s 2006-75 and 2009-106 presidents identified assessing …

Discovery Services: Single-Search Access To Multiple Resources, Win Shih Oct 2010

Discovery Services: Single-Search Access To Multiple Resources, Win Shih

Win Shih

Libraries can provide more effective services to their patrons with single-search access to multiple resources via “discovery service” products. These hosted discovery tools offer oneshot searchability of library local holdings and diverse electronic content from database producers, and electronic journal and book publishers and providers. Search results are ranked by relevancy, and offer navigation of large result sets using sorted groupings derived via facet limitation. Sometimes known as next-generation catalogs, these services encourage wider resource use, while recognizing the “long tail effect." Discovery services can exert “gravitational pull” similar to Google Scholar, empowering users to realize their scholarly goals with …

Librarians Do It Differently: Comparative Usability Testing With Students And Library Staff, Nancy Turner Oct 2010

Librarians Do It Differently: Comparative Usability Testing With Students And Library Staff, Nancy Turner

Nancy B. Turner

Our experience as librarians suggests that library staff search and locate library resources differently than college students. We bring to our work knowledge about library collections and search tool functionality that may inform our strategies for finding library resources. Through our training and experience, we have developed more accurate mental models for the information universe for which our library website is a portal. The purpose of this research is to explore that hypothesis and if it has merit, to articulate those differences in information seeking behaviors, particularly search strategy and tool use. As those patterns of difference are identified, the …

Adding New Content Types To A Large-Scale Shared Digital Repository, Shane Beers, Jeremy York, Andrew Mardesich Sep 2010

Adding New Content Types To A Large-Scale Shared Digital Repository, Shane Beers, Jeremy York, Andrew Mardesich

Shane Beers

As a digital repository for the nation’s great research libraries, HathiTrust brings together the immense collections of partner institutions. Initially, the Submission Information Packages (SIPs) deposited into HathiTrust were extremely uniform, being constituted primarily of books digitized by Google. HathiTrust’s ingest validation processes were correspondingly highly regular, designed to ensure that these SIPs met agreed-upon qualities and specifications. As HathiTrust has expanded to include materials digitized from other sources, SIPs have become more varied in their content and specifications, introducing the need to make adjustments to ingest and validation routines. One of the primary sources of new SIPs is the …

"The Song Remains ... The Same? Three Case Studies Of Issues Of Digital Preservation In Second Life Performance Practices", Dennis Moser Sep 2010

"The Song Remains ... The Same? Three Case Studies Of Issues Of Digital Preservation In Second Life Performance Practices", Dennis Moser

Dennis Moser

The documentation of performance is neither new nor restricted to the Western world. One need only look elsewhere to see the impetus of sharing and passing along the essential elements of music and dance. As we move deeper and deeper into the digital expression of culture, we must grapple with new solutions for capturing and conveying these essentials. There are countervailing attitudes towards the documentation of the manifestation of the aesthetic experience. The emergence of “performance” art and “installation” art in the late 19th and 20th centuries have given impetus to a field of critical theory somewhat at odds with …

University Institutional Repositories: An Investigation Into Long-Term Preservation And Copyright Compliance, Elizabeth M. Shaffer Aug 2010

University Institutional Repositories: An Investigation Into Long-Term Preservation And Copyright Compliance, Elizabeth M. Shaffer

Elizabeth M. Shaffer

This poster presents a research project that explores the challenges presented to Institutional Repositories (IRs) by the requirements of long-term digital preservation and copyright compliance. IRs have been developed by universities throughout North America and Western Europe with the goals of preserving and making accessible the scholarly output of academic communities, including materials that range from publications to scientific data sets. However, the literature shows that these same institutions lag behind when it comes to policies and procedures for long-term preservation and the licensing of their contents. IRs face some serious challenges: How to ensure the long-term preservation of and …

How To Preserve A Million Digital Records When Everyone Has A Million Other Things To Worry About, Elizabeth M. Shaffer, Corinne Rogers Aug 2010

How To Preserve A Million Digital Records When Everyone Has A Million Other Things To Worry About, Elizabeth M. Shaffer, Corinne Rogers

Elizabeth M. Shaffer

How do you preserve digital records in a million-dollar organization when everyone has a million other things to worry about? This case study presents a synthesis of archival and organizational theory to inform policy and procedures development for long-term preservation of digital records in an established post-secondary institution with 16,000 full-time and 32,000 part-time students. We discuss the process of documenting current practices and developing policy that embraces best practices and seeks to implement change in today’s reality of cutbacks and unique particularities of organizational culture. Offering practical solutions to policy development for digital records preservation, we present a model …

Presented at the American Library Association 2010 Annual Conference

With the release of the 2.0 Beta, Zotero has taken powerful personal bibliographic management software to the next level, making the open-source program a legitimate alternative to for-profit products such as RefWorks and EndNote. It utilizes a simple iTunes™–like interface within the Firefox web browser that gives users the ability to easily download and manipulate bibliographic information with a single click from most popular websites and databases. Reducing The Reference Collection By 75% In 75 Days: Can It Be Done?, Nora Gaskin, Jeannie An, Wade Wyckoff

Nora Gaskin

When liaison librarians at McMaster heard in summer of 2009 that we had to reduce 14,000 reference titles by 75% by December, we took a proactive approach and formed a steering committee to draft guidelines and procedures. With inspiration from a 2009 ACRL poster session by Dickinson College, we formed a plan. Could twenty very busy liaison librarians accomplish the impossible?

Cheryl Walters served as Chair of the Metadata Task Force that wrote this profile.

Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison Jun 2010

Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison

Rob Morrison

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does affect how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must engage in discussions on “Critical Information Literacy” where information is tied to knowledge creation that does not limit learners to a specific cultural worldview. Information and information-seeking processes cannot be separated from knowledge production
