Customizing Subject Guide Content For Different Disciplines: A User-Centered Approach, Shannon M. Staley Dec 2007

Customizing Subject Guide Content For Different Disciplines: A User-Centered Approach, Shannon M. Staley

Shannon M. Staley

Very few studies examine how campus communities actually make use of subject guides, which is key to informing how they should be created. Usability studies of subject page use often yield inconclusive results because the test sample is not representative of the actual campus population. Usability studies / focus groups are an excellent way of supplementing data already in existence. Survey data from a previous study, "Academic Subject Guides: A Case Study at San Jose State University," is examined to provide more rigorous guidance in developing user-centric models of online research guides.

Implementing Endeca When You're Hip, Nora Gaskin

Nora Gaskin

Gives a user interface perspective on how McMaster University Library implemented an Endeca "front end", or discovery layer, for its Horizon-based catalogue -- from a cold start in October 2006 to a "soft launch" in March 2007, and beyond. Describes some of the decisions, issues and tradeoffs we had to consider, what worked and what we'd do differently, and how our users responded to the new interface.

Perceptions Of Value And Value Beyond Perceptions: Measuring The Quality And Value Of Journal Article Readings, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King Nov 2007

Perceptions Of Value And Value Beyond Perceptions: Measuring The Quality And Value Of Journal Article Readings, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King

Carol Tenopir

When measuring quality and value of journals, what is being measured, to whom does the value accrue, and why the measurement is being done must be considered. Both implicit and explicit measures of quality and value are possible. Preliminary results of ongoing readership research show that academic library e-journal collections have both purchase and use value to academic faculty. They spend their time reading, read many articles each year, and reading benefits their work in many ways.

The rapid evolution of Web technologies and standards has fueled the development of a raft of highly interactive and personalizable Web applications. AJAX (Asynchronous javaScript and XML)-powered and RSS-enabled Web sites, such as Google/IG, Google Map, Start.com from Microsoft, and Flickr.com from Yahoo make Web interfaces out of normally-nonweb-eanbled functionalities as running typical applications on your local PC.

Using similar technologies, we have been exploring the possibilities to a library-based portal that allows users freely configure their customized portal with contents of their choosing. Be this content e-mail, news, weather, blogging, photos, library’s catalog, or any RSS feed from publishers, …

Newfound Press: The Digital Imprint Of The University Of Tennessee Libraries, Linda L. Phillips

Linda L. Phillips

The University of Tennessee Libraries launched its digital imprint, Newfound Press, in 2005 to develop a framework for making peer reviewed scholarly and specialized works available worldwide. Building on local digitization investments, Newfound Press has published two monographs, hosts a born–digital journal, and is experimenting with publishing conference proceedings as digital multimedia. Through Newfound Press, the University of Tennessee is promoting open access publishing while resolving issues such as finding sustainable funding, creating a process for peer review “on the fly,” and establishing credibility as a viable scholarly publications venue. If every research library were to provide similar services, access …

Peter D Verheyen

This is the second in a continuing series of interviews of Guild members. Current and former Exhibitions Chairs Karen Hanmer and Peter Verheyen met at Standards in Chicago in 1999. She never dreamed his subliminal messages would entice her from making “freaky-foldies” to become a binder. He never suspected she would attempt to seduce him to the other side with odd examples of vaguely book-like ephemera. They share an appreciation of fine craft, spare design, and excessively robust (read Teutonic) endsheets.

Engineers And Scholarly Journals: Reading Patterns In The Electronic Era, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King Jul 2007

Engineers And Scholarly Journals: Reading Patterns In The Electronic Era, Carol Tenopir, Donald W. King

Carol Tenopir

Scholarly journals are an important source of trusted information, although the engineering professional reads fewer journal articles on average than do members of the scientific and engineering academic communities. Studies have shown that engineers spend a smaller proportion of work time reading from scholarly journals and that they read fewer articles than scientists and physicians. Nonetheless journals are useful and valuable to engineers, who also read many types of information resources, including standards, technical reports, books, and articles.

The Globalization Of Journalism Online: A Transatlantic Study Of News Websites And Their International Readers, Neil J. Thurman Jun 2007

The Globalization Of Journalism Online: A Transatlantic Study Of News Websites And Their International Readers, Neil J. Thurman

Neil Thurman

Some British news websites are attracting larger audiences than their American competitors in US regional and national markets. At the British news websites studied, Americans made up an average of 36 per cent of the total audience with up to another 39 per cent of readers from countries other than the USA. Visibility on portals like the Drudge Report and on indexes such as Google News brings considerable international traffic but is partly dependent on particular genres of story and fast publication times. Few news websites are willing to disclose breakdowns of their large numbers of international readers fearing a …

Paid Content Strategies For News Websites: An Empirical Study Of British Newspapers' Online Business Models, Neil J. Thurman, Jack Herbert Jun 2007

Paid Content Strategies For News Websites: An Empirical Study Of British Newspapers' Online Business Models, Neil J. Thurman, Jack Herbert

Neil Thurman

Qualitative interviews with editors and executives at UK national and regional newspapers revealed experimentation with online business models. All of the selected web publications offered their most popular news content for free in an attempt to maximize traffic. Although advertising was the principal source of revenue, each charged for some content—usually that which was unique to the newspaper brand. Online content charging generated extra revenue, but there was evidence it was also being implemented in an attempt to protect print circulations. The study revealed widespread optimism about future revenue streams including the provision of content to mobile devices, and the …

Academic Subject Guides: A Case Study Of Use At San Jose State University, Shannon M. Staley May 2007

Academic Subject Guides: A Case Study Of Use At San Jose State University, Shannon M. Staley

Shannon M. Staley

Subject guides are lists of resources created to assist students with their research needs. While academic librarians ascribe great importance to subject guide development, it is difficult to tell whether students find them useful. A review of the literature reveals a lack of user-centered data in this area. This study investigates students’use of subject guides in three areas of study—Nursing, Journalism & Mass Communications, and Organization & Management. Results indicate that students who have received library instruction tend to use subject guides more frequently and find them useful.

Continuing Education And Knowledge Retention: A Comparison Of Online And Face-To-Face Deliveries, Julie A. Garrison, Connie Schardt

Julie A Garrison

Objective: Drawing upon earlier research that surveyed students’ grasp of subject knowledge after taking either an online or face-to-face EBM course, this paper explores the effectiveness of a Web-based professional continuing education course, compared with an equivalent face-to- face version. The course was designed to teach practicing medical librarians how to participate in and advocate for Evidence Based Medicine at their individual institutions. Methods: Seventy-two practicing librarians, self-selected to participate in either the distance education eight week course or the eight hour face-to-face class. Using a modified version of the Fresno Test of Competence in Evidence-Based Medicine, the authors compared …

Collaborative Strategies To Meet The Challenges Of Serving Graduate Students, Michele D. Behr, Barbara J. Cockrell Mar 2007

Collaborative Strategies To Meet The Challenges Of Serving Graduate Students, Michele D. Behr, Barbara J. Cockrell

Barbara J Cockrell

Recent LibQual+ (2004) and Off-campus Satisfaction (2002, 2006) surveys at Western Michigan University revealed that graduate students had information needs that were not being met. Many lack awareness of resources and the necessary research skills for performing graduate level research, yet instructors are reluctant to relinquish class time for library sessions and the students themselves are reluctant to seek the individual help they need. In 2005-6 we collaborated with the Graduate College to offer new graduate workshops that were not class related but were instead part of a Strategies for Success series that was already in place. These workshop topics …

Institutional Repositories: Evaluating The Reasons For Non-Use Of Cornell University's Installation Of Dspace, Philip Davis, Matthew Connolly Mar 2007

Institutional Repositories: Evaluating The Reasons For Non-Use Of Cornell University's Installation Of Dspace, Philip Davis, Matthew Connolly

IR Research

Problem: While there has been considerable attention dedicated to the development and implementation of institutional repositories, there has been little done to evaluate them, especially with regards to faculty participation.

Purpose: This article reports on a three-part evaluative study of institutional repositories. We describe the contents and participation in Cornell's DSpace and compare these results with seven university DSpace installations. Through in-depth interviews with eleven faculty members in the sciences, social sciences and humanities, we explore their attitudes, motivations, and behaviors for non-participation in institutional repositories.

Results: Cornell's DSpace is largely underpopulated and underused by its faculty. Many of its …

The Evolving Nature Of Faculty Publications, Jan Novak, Leslie Pardo Feb 2007

The Evolving Nature Of Faculty Publications, Jan Novak, Leslie Pardo

IR Research

Technology increasingly drives the evolving nature of the library's role in managing faculty publications. Libraries not only create physical archives of faculty scholarship, but take no the active role of facilitating immediate access to content. Trends in legal scholarship, including new formats such as blogs and podcasts and the open access initiatives, compel libraries to develop creative solutions such as enhanced bibliographies, searchable databases, and digital repositories to manage access, preseve, and disseminate faculty writings.
