This Essay was written as part of a Symposium on open access publishing for legal scholarship, held at Lewis & Clark Law School. It makes the claim that “open access” publishing models will succeed, or not, to the extent that they account for the existing “economy of prestige” that drives law reviews and legal scholarship. The study was carried ot to determine the undergraduate students awareness and attitude towards HIV/AIDS prevention. A sample of 1000 students was taken from the Federal University of Technology Owerri. The results show that the students had no deep knowledge of HIV/AIDS, their major source of information is the mass media, many of the students were not taking precautionary measures against HIV/AIDS infection.

Obtaining a professional position in the field requires real world experience. Theoretical facets form the backbone, but exposure to real-life situations need not be ignored. 'Sustainable professional competencies' warrant for the continued education and training of the LIS professionals in general and the new entrants in particular. This paper discusses the prospects of the Library Internship Training and thereby advocates for its integration in the LIS curricula. It reveals that, there is much to gain from the Library Internship.

In 2005-2006 CSA developed a new “deep indexing” method to extract tables and figures from journal articles, index each table and figure, provide a retrieval method to locate tables and figures or complete articles that contain relevant figures or tables, and link them back to the article. A prototype Tables & Figures index of approximately 300,000 objects was made available for testing on the CSA Illumina Web-based platform in April 2006. The Tables & Figure index prototype was particularly strong in its coverage of biological, environmental, and aquatic sciences.

This report is a factual analysis of the results of the University of Akron survey of students, conducted in October and November 2005 (see Appendix for the Questionnaire.) A comparison of this report with Tenopir & King survey data of other U.S. universities is not yet included, but further comparisons, both with the other Ohio universities, universities in Australia, and the University of Tennessee, will be included in subsequent articles for publication. This report is for the internal use of Akron library personnel, as well as for the preparation of presentations and journal articles.

A folksongs karaoke product has been created to increase usage of subtitled media to enhance literacy and technology use, particularly among girls in rural India. This entails generating and proliferating popular local folksongs with social and cultural themes of interest to girls, accompanied by the award-winning Same Language Subtitling (SLS) feature. In this paper, the prime goal is to discuss possible implications of this novel technology content on girls’ socialization, education, and activism. In an earlier article, “Ideas, artifacts and facilities: information as a common-pool resource”, we examined the role of collective action in building robust knowledge commons and in circumventing trends of enclosure and privatisation of the intellectual public domain. Our analysis suggested that collective action and new institutional design play as large a part in shaping the collection, distribution, and preservation of scholarly information as do legal restrictions and market forces. The microbiological commons extends well beyond the boundaries of e-prints and other full-text research documents that are the focus of the open access movement. In January 2006 CLIR (the Council on Library and Information Resources) formed a committee of advisors to develop strategically directed scholarly communication and preservation agendas that would appeal to and create value for CLIR constituents and the broader communities of stakeholders whose existence is entwined with these two topics. This report represents the findings as presented by Ann Okerson (the committee leader) and the committee findings between mid-January and late March 2006, identifying possible directions and studies to be pursued in CLIR's scholarly communication programs over the next three years.

The Fedora architecture is an extensible framework for the storage, management, and dissemination of complex objects and the relationships among them. Fedora accommodates the aggregation of local and distributed content into digital objects and the association of services with objects. This allows an object to have several accessible representations, some of them dynamically produced. The architecture includes a generic Resource Description Framework (RDF)-based relationship model that represents relationships among objects and their components. Campus life now includes: Downloading lecture notes, viewing course videos and taking quizzes via class websites; checking E-mail every 30 minutes, interacting with friends locally/globally courtesy of IM/“blogging;” MMORPGing (“Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Play Gaming”); downloading music/video files in MP3/M4A formats; sharing multi-megapixellated jpeg photos with online friends, vis-a-vis highspeed internet “lines.”

Introduction. A framework for information science based on time is proposed, derived from an exploratory, ethnographic study of information in the hobby of gourmet cooking. Method. Participant obseration of the social world of the hobby, plus twenty semi-structured interviews with hobby cooks, followed by a photographic inventory of their household culinary information collections. Analysis. Data were analysed using grounded theory facilitated by NVivo software. While coding information activities and resources, time emerged as a critical aspect of the hobby and its information phenomena. Results. The hobby unfolds as three temporal arcs.
