Certainty Identification In Texts: Categorization Model And Manual Tagging Results, Elizabeth Liddy, Victoria Rubin, Noriko Kando
Certainty Identification In Texts: Categorization Model And Manual Tagging Results, Elizabeth Liddy, Victoria Rubin, Noriko Kando
Victoria Rubin
This chapter presents a theoretical framework and preliminary results for manual categorization of explicit certainty information in 32 English newspaper articles. Our contribution is in a proposed categorization model and analytical framework for certainty identification. Certainty is presented as a type of subjective information available in texts. Statements with explicit certainty markers were identified and categorized according to four hypothesized dimensions – level, perspective, focus, and time of certainty. The preliminary results reveal an overall promising picture of the presence of certainty information in texts, and establish its susceptibility to manual identification within the proposed four-dimensional certainty categorization analytical framework. …
Comparing Student Assessments And Perceptions Of Online And Face-To-Face Versions Of An Introductory Linguistics Course, David Johnson, Chris C. Palmer
Comparing Student Assessments And Perceptions Of Online And Face-To-Face Versions Of An Introductory Linguistics Course, David Johnson, Chris C. Palmer
Chris C. Palmer
This article examines the issue of whether linguistics is better suited for a face-to-face (F2F) environment than an online teaching environment. Specifically, it examines assessment scores and student perceptions of the effectiveness of an introductory linguistics course at an undergraduate state university that has been taught multiple times in both online and F2F modes. To study this issue data was collected about the types of students enrolled in either version of the course, including their GPAs and course grades. A survey with both closed- and open-ended questions was also used to ask students about their experiences and perceptions of the …
Identifying Subjective Statements In News Titles Using A Personal Sense Annotation Framework, Polina Panicheva, John Cardiff, Paolo Rosso
Identifying Subjective Statements In News Titles Using A Personal Sense Annotation Framework, Polina Panicheva, John Cardiff, Paolo Rosso
John Cardiff
Subjective language contains information about private states. The goal of subjective language identification is to determine that a private state is expressed, without considering its polarity or specific emotion. A component of word meaning, “Personal Sense,” has clear potential in the field of subjective language identification, as it reflects a meaning of words in terms of unique personal experience and carries personal characteristics. In this paper we investigate how Personal Sense can be harnessed for the purpose of identifying subjectivity in news titles. In the process, we develop a new Personal Sense annotation framework for annotating and classifying subjectivity, polarity, …

The research project is centered on determining the evolving meaning of the term “polytechnic”. As a standard class assignment, freshman students will be required to execute video interviews of upper classmen to find out what they think “polytechnic” means. This assignment will be repeated with each group of incoming freshmen so that all students will have the opportunity to interview and be interviewed. By interviewing the students each year, the researchers will be able to understand the changing definition of the term “polytechnic” as the students progress through school. By comparing responses from differing freshmen classes, the researchers will be …
Interest, Use, And Interest In Uses In Folk Biology, Terence E. Hays
Interest, Use, And Interest In Uses In Folk Biology, Terence E. Hays
Terence Hays
In this work on folk biological taxonomy, Terence Hays the author, calls upon various works of previous field studies conducted over a long-term period including those by Bulmer, Everyman, Hunn, Brown, and Hymes. Hays looks back to works by Ralph Bulmer and his co-workers where taxonomies of five or six levels deep were not surprising. Hays points out that this is a stark contrast to Everyman, Alexander Portnoy's study regarding the simplicity of Westerners folk systems and then posits why "the folk" classify their environment in great detail. Hays brings to light that it has much to do with the …

It is perhaps useful to call attention to the work of Henri Ramirez, one of the most active linguists in Amazonia, since his publications have remained somewhat obscure, especially for those living outside of South America. This rather unusual scholar essentially only publishes books (18 monographs to date, including practical works for the native population), not articles, and rarely attends conferences. His principal published works are being reviewed in UAL to make them more known to the linguistic community. He is currently a professor in Letters and Linguistics at the Federal University of Rond'nia in the town of Guajar-Mirim, on …

Reduplication, Ideophones, And Onomatoepoeic Repetition In The Yanomami Languages, Gale Goodwin Gomez
Reduplication, Ideophones, And Onomatoepoeic Repetition In The Yanomami Languages, Gale Goodwin Gomez
Gale Goodwin Gomez
The morphological process of reduplication occurs throughout the Yanomami languages of northern Amazonia. Onomatopoeia and the repetition of morphemes of apparent ideophonic origin are also common in the four major subgroups of the Yanomami language family: Yanomami, Yanomae, Sanuma, and Yanam. Reduplication has been specifically mentioned in grammatical descriptions of Yanomami (Ramirez 1994), Sanuma (Borgman 1990) and Yanam (Gómez 1990). Documentation of the Yanomami languages is ongoing, and grammatical descriptions are incomplete. Nevertheless, data from a thematic lexicon of Yanomae (Albert and Gómez, in prep.) highlights the frequent repetition of onomatopoeic forms, especially in relation to body movements, bodily functions, …

On Passive In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
Ileana Paul
This paper examines two different passive formations in Malagasy. Although one passive appears to promote certain types of adjuncts, it is shown that these adjuncts can appear in an NP argument position. Passive in Malagasy is thus argued to uniquely promote NP arguments to subject position.
