In an effort to address declining university retention rates and to reach students who may not make it to the library for research help, the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is in the process developing a peer-mentoring program. This program is one way the library can help the institution in its efforts raise student retention rates and improve student success. Rapid e-learning programs such as Articulate Storyline make it possible to develop highly interactive sharable content object reference model (SCORM) packages without advanced programming knowledge. These SCORM packages can be loaded into most learning management systems (LMS) and allow librarians to better gauge students' information literacy competency and create flipped instruction opportunities to allow for better use of valuable in-class time. As instruction librarians, we find ourselves siloed from our fellow teaching librarians and faculty in the design, delivery, and assessment of our instruction. We persevere in adopting a creative lens when asked to teach specific skills within limited time frames, we negotiate for more time with our students to engage in higher order thinking about research and Information Literacy (IL), and we attempt to convince faculty to allow us a sliver of a grade percentage to reinforce the value of the assignments we employ in-session. Librarians and disciplinary faculty showcase four collaborative projects that have provided students with a high-impact learning experiences in information literacy. These projects cover a range of methods, including a service-learning program that allows education students a chance to teach information literacy skills to a cohort of public school students, a summer scholars research program, the creation of an open education resource by a writing class, and a class built around designing materials to teach college students information literacy terminology. These projects achieve many of the practices identified by the Association of American Colleges and University as high-impact learning practices.

Covering necessary information literacy topics in a one shot session can be difficult. To address this challenge, the Marquette Raynor Memorial Libraries moved to a new instruction model for the First Year English program. The new model involved embedded librarianship and interactive Articulate Storyline tutorials pre-loaded into the Learning Management System (LMS). These new initiatives provided flexibility in teaching information literacy concepts and fostered stronger relationships between librarians and their instructors. Qualitative analysis of reflective essays by first-year students in an academic skills course documented outcomes related to the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Student narratives showed how novices encounter the clusters of concepts described in the Framework as “Scholarship as Conversation,” “Searching as Strategic Exploration,” and “Research as Inquiry.” Assessing students’ metacognition—that is, their thinking about the learning process—revealed that they connected personal identity with academic conversations, developed strategies for exploring subject classification, and balanced persistence with help-seeking. Students today face a daily explosion of information resources and the challenge of using these resources effectively and responsibly. Information literacy instruction (ILI) requires a shift in focus from teaching specific information resources to a set of critical thinking skills involving the use of information. ILI in an academic setting includes a variety of instructional approaches, such as course-related library instruction sessions, course-integrated projects, online tutorials, and stand-alone courses. This panel will provide an overview of Assessment in Action learning projects, which assessed library impact on student learning. Augustana College studied the effect of using original primary materials on first-year students’ information literacy and critical thinking skills. DePaul University investigated how independent learning activities allowed first year students to articulate how the library contributed to their success. Illinois Central College looked at library instruction’s impact on student success within sections of Composition ENG 111 (Composition II) courses. Illinois Institute of Technology examined whether intensity of library usage affected undergraduate student success.

The 14-month program entails the development and implementation of an action learning project examining the library’s impact on student success and contribution to assessment activities on campus. Brockport’s four person team includes members from outside of the library to foster cross-campus collaboration. Collaborative partnerships between faculty and librarians to support student research is not a new idea; however, the practice of embedding a librarian within a course, department, or curriculum began in the early 2000s as library resources became more accessible in the virtual environment.
