Increases In Peptide Y-Y Levels Following Oat Β-Glucan Ingestion Are Dose-Dependent In Overweight Adults, Eleanor J. Beck, Linda C. Tapsell, Marijka J. Batterham, Susan M. Tosh, Xu-Feng Huang
Dr Marijka Batterham
Peptide Y-Y (PYY) is an anorexigenic hormone implicated in appetite control, and β-glucan is a fiber known to affect appetite. We hypothesized that plasma PYY levels would increase in overweight human adults consuming increasing doses of β-glucan. The objective was to test whether the effect could be seen with β-glucan delivered through extruded cereals containing a high β-glucan oat bran with demonstrated high molecular weight and solubility. Fourteen subjects consumed a control meal and 3 cereals of varying β-glucan concentration (between 2.2 and 5.5 g), and blood samples were collected over 4 hours. Analysis of raw PYY data showed a …

High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a radiation treatment technique capable of delivering large dose rates to the tumor. Radiation is delivered using remote afterloaders to drive highly active sources (commonly 192Ir with an air KERMA strength range between 20 000 and 40 000 U, where 1 U = 1 uGy m2/h in air) through applicators directly into the patient's prescribed region of treatment. Due to the obvious ramifications of incorrect treatment while using such an active source, it is essential that there are methods for quality assurance (QA) that can directly and accurately verify the treatment plan and the …

I-125 Ropes Eye Plaque Dosimetry: Validation Of A Commercial 3d Ophthalmic Brachytherapy Treatment Planning System And Independent Dose Calculation Software With Gafchromic Ebt3 Films, Joel Poder, Stephanie Corde
Stéphanie Corde
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the dose distributions for different Radiation Oncology Physics and Engineering Services, Australia (ROPES) type eye plaques loaded with I-125 (model 6711) seeds using GafChromic R EBT3 films, in order to verify the dose distributions in the Plaque SimulatorTM (PS) ophthalmic 3D treatment planning system. The brachytherapy module of RADCALC R was used to independently check the dose distributions calculated by PS. Correction factors were derived from the measured data to be used in PS to account for the effect of the stainless steel ROPES plaque backing on the 3D dose distribution. …

A Real-Time In Vivo Dosimetric Verification Method For High-Dose Rate Intracavitary Brachytherapy Of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Zhen-Yu Qi, Xiao-Wu Deng, X Cao, Shao-Min Huang, Michael Lerch, Anatoly Rosenfeld
Michael L.F. Lerch
Purpose: A real-time in vivo dosimetric verification method using metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) dosimeters has been developed for patient dosimetry in high-dose rate (HDR) intracavitary brachytherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: The necessary calibration and correction factors for MOSFET measurements in 192Iridium source were determined in a water phantom. With the detector placed inside a custom-made nasopharyngeal applicator, the actual dose delivered to the tumor was measured in vivo and compared to the calculated values using a commercial brachytherapy planning system. Results: Five MOSFETs were independently calibrated with the HDR source, yielding calibration factors of 0.48 ± 0.007 cGymV. …

Improvements In Dose Calculation Accuracy For Small Off-Axis Targets In High Dose Per Fraction Tomotherapy, Nicholas Hardcastle, Adam Bayliss, Jeannie Wong, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Wolfgang A. Tome
Anatoly Rozenfeld
Purpose: A recent field safety notice from TomoTherapy detailed the underdosing of small, off-axis targets when receiving high doses per fraction. This is due to angular undersampling in the dose calculation gantry angles. This study evaluates a correction method to reduce the underdosing, to be implemented in the current version (v4.1) of the TomoTherapy treatment planning software. Methods: The correction method, termed "Super Sampling" involved the tripling of the number of gantry angles from which the dose is calculated during optimization and dose calculation. Radiochromic film was used to measure the dose to small targets at various off-axis distances receiving …

Luminescence Characteristics And Dose Distributions For Quartz And Feldspar Grains From Mumba Rockshelter, Tanzania, Luke Gliganic, Zenobia Jacobs, Richard Roberts
Richard G Roberts
Mumba rockshelter is a key archaeological site for the Middle and Later Stone Age occupation of East Africa, but its chronology has remained unresolved. We report the results of a dating study, focussing on the characterisation of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) properties of quartz- and potassium-rich feldspar grains. Quartz has previously proven troublesome for dating in East Africa. We identified five general types of quartz grain behaviour, based on the shapes of their OSL decay and dose–response curves. Dose recovery experiments and measurement of the natural samples revealed particular problems with quartz grains that …
Statistical Aspects Of Equivalent Dose And Error Calculation And Display In Osl Dating: An Overview And Some Recommendations, R Galbraith, Richard Roberts
Statistical Aspects Of Equivalent Dose And Error Calculation And Display In Osl Dating: An Overview And Some Recommendations, R Galbraith, Richard Roberts
Richard G Roberts
All Quaternary dating methods involve the measurement of one or more variables to estimate the age of a sample. Each measured quantity has an associated error and uncertainty, and may also be subject to natural variation. We review the statistical estimation of such uncertainties and variation for comparing and interpreting age estimates, with specific reference to the estimation of equivalent dose (De) values in the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of sediments. We discuss statistical aspects of OSL signal and background estimation, the determination of De values for multi-grain aliquots and individual mineral grains from the same and different samples, …

Statins are widely being used for the treatment of a variety of conditions beyond their original indication for lowering cholesterol. We have previously reported that simvastatin affected the dopaminergic system in the rat brain. This study aims to investigate locomotor and anxiety effects along with the regional changes of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the rat brain after 4-week administration of simvastatin. Hyperlocomotive and anxiolytic-like activities in the rat were observed after chronic administration of high dose simvastatin (10 mg/kg/day). Distributions and alterations of NMDA receptors in the post-mortem rat brain were detected by [3H] MK-801 binding autoradiography. Simvastatin increased [3H] …
