This dissertation argues that the scope and substance of the celebration of Australia Day this century can be explained using theories of national identity and invented tradition. It draws upon the columns of capital city newspapers in selected years to gauge how Australians celebrated their national day and what they thought about its significance. The dissertation argues that for most of this century Australia Day failed to make its mark on the national calendar because Australians' perceptions of their nationality were inextricably tied to their feelings of kinship with the British people. This paper extends the conjectural approach in industrial organization to the analysis of imperfections in output and factor markets. Starting from the specification of a production function, the econometric analysis is based on the formulation and estimation of a simultaneous-equation model consisting of production function, first-order conditions associated with factor employment, and two conjectural elasticities to parameterize the industry's oligopoly and oligopsony equilibria. As an example, we provide and application to the U.S. meat-packing industry. Our results suggest that the industry exercises market power in both the output (meat) market and the factor (live animal) market.

The descriptive and functional morphology of the postcranium of the vertical clinging and leaping prosimians is of great interest in both adaptational and phylogenetic studies of extant and extinct primates. An analysis of patterns of femoral morphology among quadrupedal and saltatory living prosimians indicates the presence of at least two, and possibly three, distinct femoral adaptations to the demands of an arboreal, saltatory existence. This paper discusses an as yet undescribed lesion of the orbit in Australian Aboriginal skeletal populations. The rather high frequency and geographical distribution of the lesion suggests an association with a common, chronic eye infection. Using differential diagnosis to eleminate a variety of ophthalmic conditions, it is proposed that chronic trachoma may be a possible causative agent. Distribution of the lesion follows that of trachoma among contemporary Aboriginal people, with the highest frequencies occurring in the hotter, arid portions of the Australian continent. The three preconditioning components are the self-concept, the worldview, and values. The components of the conflict cycle are stress, feelings, behavior, and response. The model is applied in analyzing an example of a negative power struggle between a child care worker and a child. A study examines the failure of punishment to deter repeat offenders. Data were obtained from interviews with 60 incarcerated repeat property offenders. The most common responses explaining the lack of deterrent effects on their actions were: (1) They thought they would not get caught. (2) They thought that if they were caught they would be incapacitated for a relatively short time. (3) They considered prison a nonthreatening environment.

Drug abuse treatment is an effective way to reduce drug use. Treatment is also intended to promote other positive outcomes such as reduced criminal activity, employment and higher earnings. This study examines the impact of drug abuse treatment on the followup labor market experiences of clients. We conduct a descriptive analysis of labor force status, work effort and earnings one year prior to admission, at admission and one year following discharge. The analysis is performed with data from the Treatment Outcome Prospective Study (TOPS). TOPS is a large scale longitudinal study of over 11,000 individuals admitted to 41 federally funded …
