Instrumentally Based Conditioned Avoidance Response Acquisition In Goldfish In A Simultaneous Presentation Task, Dominic Zerbolio, L L. Wickstra Apr 1979

Instrumentally Based Conditioned Avoidance Response Acquisition In Goldfish In A Simultaneous Presentation Task, Dominic Zerbolio, L L. Wickstra

UMSL Emeritus

Goldfish, run in a Y-maze, with the simultaneous presentation of a cue associated with shock and a second cue associated with safety (no US), acquired a decided preference for the safe cue. These data are interpreted as representing a clear demonstration of stimulus-specific conditioned avoidance. Because earlier research has been challenged by unusual control performances, this instrumental learning conclusion is hesitantly drawn.

When Does Majority Rule Supply Public Goods Efficiently?, Ted Bergstrom Dec 1978

When Does Majority Rule Supply Public Goods Efficiently?, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

H.R. Bowen showed that if voters have equal tax shares and if marginal rates of substitution are symmetrically distributed, then majority voting leads to efficient provision of public goods. These conditions are not likely to apply in a community with asymmetric income distribution. This paper defines a new idea for public goods allocation, a "pseudo-Lindahl equilibrium" which combines majority voting with tax rates that depend on income and other observable characteristices in such a way that the majority rule outcome is Pareto optimal for an interesting class of societies. The informational requirements for implementing pseudo-Lindahl are much less stringent than …

Medical Paternalism And The Rule Of Law: A Reply To Dr. Relman, Charles Baron Dec 1978

Medical Paternalism And The Rule Of Law: A Reply To Dr. Relman, Charles Baron

Charles H. Baron

In this Article, Professor Baron challenges the position taken recently by Dr. Arnold Relman in this journal that the 1977 Saikewicz decision of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts was incorrect in calling for routine judicial resolution of decisions whether to provide life-prolonging treatment to terminally ill incompetent patients. First, Professor Baron argues that Dr. Relman's position that doctors should make such decisions is based upon an outmoded, paternalistic view of the doctor-patient relationship. Second, he points out the importance of guaranteeing to such decisions the special qualities of process which characterize decision making by courts and which are not …

Human Aspects Of Planning Shopping Centers, Nicholas Patricios Dec 1978

Human Aspects Of Planning Shopping Centers, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

After a brief outline of the macro- and micro-model approaches to shopping, a perception and spatial behavior model is selected as a framework for the research study. The study aims to identify the variables constituting the mental image of a consumer's shopping environment and which of these variables are considered important in spatial choice. Statistically significant differences in the preferences of shoppers are found based on the type of township the shopper lives in, the purpose of the shopping trip, and the shopper's income group. Patterns of variation on consumer attitudes as to the perceived importance of various attributes are …

Socio-Economic And Educational Reforms In Ethiopia (1942-1974): Correspondence And Contradiction, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

Socio-Economic And Educational Reforms In Ethiopia (1942-1974): Correspondence And Contradiction, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Using the theory of correspondence and contradiction, the author analyzes the interaction between socioeconomic and educational changes in Ethiopia from 1942 to 1974. An introductory section sets forth the principles of correspondence and contradiction, which refer to how the means of economic production determine conditions in the noneconomic "superstructure" of society and how the superstructure in turn acts on the means of production, creating contradictions between the two. Section 2 traces Ethiopia's major socioeconomic changes from 1941 to 1974, including the incorporation of the economy into the world market economy, economic stagnation, the emergence of foreign-dominated commercial farms and industries, …

The Viability Of African Socialism As A Strategy For Development, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

The Viability Of African Socialism As A Strategy For Development, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Many Africanists have shown serious concern about African socialism and have challenged African socialism, as a concept, from both theoretical and practical point of view. This study argues that most of the criticisms raised against African socialism are out of context and ahistorical. A careful analysis and the steps taken by socialist African states clearly signifies that African socialism is an identifiable body of thought and an appropriate course of action for African countries to follow in order to embark on socialist transformation.

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

A self-administered questionnaire given to 526 postsecondary students and 424 employed university graduates provides data on the participation of Tanzanian women in higher education and in the work force. Research shows that Tanzanian women students are more likely than men to come from more developed regions, reside in urban areas, have relatively well-educated and highly paid parents in professional or administrative occupations, and be enrolled in courses that reflect stereotypical ideas of women's role. Though women initially earn as much as men, they wait longer for initial employment, and pay differentials between the sexes increase over time in favor of …

An Agentive Perspective Of Urban Planning, Nicholas Patricios Dec 1978

An Agentive Perspective Of Urban Planning, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

An agentive model of person-environment relations is proposed based on environmental behavior research. The agentive process consists of three stages: awareness of information in the phenomenal environment; perception and cognition - construal - of the environmental information; and action in the behavioral environment. The agentive model of urban planning brings together theory and practice and would assist efforts to resolve conflicts and achieve consensus in urban planning transactions.

Schooling For Alienation: The Ethiopian Experience, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

Schooling For Alienation: The Ethiopian Experience, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

Conducted with 1500 randomly selected Ethiopian twelfth grade students, this study explored reasons for student alienation in Ethiopia. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Findings indicated that students are more alienated when they perceive the school environment to be closed. Students who were more anxious about passing the highly selective Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination were more alienated than those less anxious, suggesting that this test is a cause of alienation. Students in institutions with lower prestige felt more alienated, reflecting perhaps their knowledge that students from such institutions have a smaller chance for later success. Finally, the most …

Interim Analysis Of The Free-Fair Transit Experiments, A. Studenmund, S. Swan, D. Connor Dec 1978

Interim Analysis Of The Free-Fair Transit Experiments, A. Studenmund, S. Swan, D. Connor

A. H. Studenmund

This paper summarizes the early results of the two systemwide off-peak free-fare transit experiments being conducted in Trenton, New Jersey, and Denver, Colorado. These experiments, which are sponsored by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) under its Service and Methods Demonstration Program, are the first free-fare programs of such size and comprehensiveness. The demonstrations have already provided a number of interesting, if still tentative, conclusions. The first major conclusion is that, while free fare induces large and sustainable ridership gains (19 percent in Trenton and 34 percent in Denver), the general aggregate behavior of the population in making their modal …
