Data Management Planning and Resources covers NIH Data Sharing Plans (DSPs), data management plans (DMPs), describes the areas that are typically included in DSPs and DMPs, and identifies tools and resources to help support a data sharing consultation with disciplinary faculty. Participants will be informed of the NIH data sharing policy and general requirements in order to describe them to a faculty member, be able to identify the qualities that comprise effective data sharing plans, and identify resources and tools that can be useful in data management.

The objective of this study is to examine the impact of incorporating user experience study methods into library database purchase and renewal. In the summer of 2013, Purdue libraries introduced a modified standard usability concept (heuristic evaluation, or expert review) into an existing yearly electronic resource evaluation process. Every year librarians already evaluated electronic resources in the collection using a set of parameters including usage statistics but never explicitly included database usability. Introducing more user experience parameters into process allows librarians to record usability errors to be communicated back to database vendors or to be considered for database renewal and …

Beginning in 2011, there have been several policy changes directly affecting the management, preservation, and accessibility of publically-funded research and resulting research data in the United States. In January 18, 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) required data management plans to be submitted with all grant proposals. On February 22, 2013, the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the President of the United States extended a similar requirement to all federal agencies who have a research and development budget of more than $100 million. This poster reports on the results of a content analysis project in which transcripts of interviews with professors in seven disciplines. The faculty members were interviewed about the data education needs of their students. The results indicate that generally faculty members feel that graduate students are unprepared to manage data when the enter graduate education. Many faculty are under the impression that students had previously received training on data management topics but were still lacking in skills.

Correlating The Purdue Spatial Visualization Test With The Wonderlic Personnel Test For American Football Players, Karthik Sukumar

This research study aims to find the relationship between the scores for the Purdue Spatial Visualization test (PSVT) and the Wonderlic Personnel test (WPT) for American collegiate football players. Fifty-five collegiate football players took part in the study by attempting the PSVT and the WPT. The scores on these tests were compared to find if there existed a correlation between the scores on both these tests. The results showed that the scores on both these tests had a significant correlation with respect to each other. But, the group that took the WPT before the PSVT showed a lower correlation between …

At Purdue we support undergraduate research through various library-driven initiatives such as information literacy (IL), data literacy (DL) and scholarly communication (SC). Although these initiatives can be utilized to support undergraduate research individually, librarians are beginning to recognize a need to provide a service model that offers a more complementary/holistic approach that better utilizes the full capability of these initiatives. Higher quality computer graphics in the areas of virtual reality and games is generally assumed to create a more immersive experience for the end user. This assumption was examined by testing to what degree graphical fidelity was associated with physiological arousal as measured by a galvanic skin response (GSR) sensor. Thirty-six subjects played two different video games, Crysis and Dead Space, at the highest and lowest graphical quality settings while their GSR activity was measured. No significant difference in GSR was observed as associated with graphical quality. However, when asked how the user would rate graphical fidelity usage in Dead …

The First Year Engineering program at Purdue University is regularly reviewed and revised to adapt to the needs of the students, feedback from teaching faculty, and the changing needs of the university curriculum. In the last year, a unifying theme was added to the class to help tie all the different activities together. That theme was “evidence based decision making in engineering”, a perfect fit for introducing and discussing information literacy many times throughout the semester, rather than in a single, isolated session.

This paper describes a project designed to raise the awareness of policymakers about the importance of information literacy to achieve societal goals. Issues benefit from the governmental support, prioritization, mandates, and funding that can result when there is policy behind them. Studies indicate that many people lack the ability to draw on quality sources of information for a variety of purposes. Attention by policymakers would accelerate the inclusion of information literacy in settings such as education, workforce training, citizenship preparation, and lifelong learning. One way to raise awareness of policymakers is by recommending a proclamation to government executives.
