Economic Development And Nostalgic Tourism In Southern Mexico, Anabel López Salinas, Rachel Elizabeth Buckley, Rafael Gabriel Reyes Morales

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

Nostalgia tourism is very important for the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. In San Juan Bautista Coixtlahuaca, a community in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, nostalgia tourism, along with remittances, strengthens economic activities, consumption, and household well-being. However, the annual average stay of visitors to the region is low and not enough to sustain local development. Results from an interview with thirty people from Coixtlahuaca, but residing outside of the community at the time of the interview, show that there is a need to invest in services that help to retain nostalgia tourists as well as increase national and international tourism, …

Public Administration’S Identity Crisis And The Emerging Approach That May Alleviate It, Joseph A. Hafer Jun 2016

Public Administration’S Identity Crisis And The Emerging Approach That May Alleviate It, Joseph A. Hafer

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

The field of public administration is in the middle of a long-standing, self-imposed identity crisis. This is due in part to the acceptance of new perspectives in the field as constituting the identity of the field; but for only as long as the perspective remains dominant. The near future of public administration holds another potential shift in dominant perspective to that of an approach to public administration that is founded in the ideals of democratic theory and public values theory. This approach is supported by trends of increasing research and theory in concepts such as public participation and public service …

Aspirational Planning: A Statistical Model Of Hawthorne Bridge And Tilikum Crossing Bicycle Ride Counts, Robert Mccullough, Ramon Cabauatan, Jacob Gellman

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

Portland city planners have routinely planned for an increase in bicycle commutership and a decrease in automobile commutership. This paper discusses the latest data on Portland car and bicycle use. Portland and Multnomah County are observing an increase in single occupancy vehicle commuters, car ownership, and gasoline consumption. Bicycle use in Portland is found to have followed a logistic curve pattern since the early 1990s. The authors present an ordinary least squares model to explain bicycle ridership on the Hawthorne Bridge and the recently constructed Tilikum Crossing. When controlling for other factors such as weather and daylight, the Tilikum Crossing …

Book Review: Aleman, Richard (Ed). The Hound Of Distributism: A Solution For Our Social And Economic Crisis, Anthony Philip Stine

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

Aleman and the collected authors provide a starting point for investigating modern Distributist writings. Distributism is a 'third way' private property-based economic system focused on decentralization of power, a focus on family life and reconceptualizing our relationships between individuals, families, the state and large economic actors. Essays range from the topics of totalitarianism and big government to pastoralism and permaculture. Contributing authors include classic Distributists like GK Chesterton and modern writers such as Joseph Pearce, Dale Ahlquist, Philip Maxence and Ryan Grant. The selected authors present a snapshot of a theory that presents a means towards achieving sustainability through decentralization …

Policy Analysis: Minimum Wage In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Aaron Kaufman Jun 2016

Policy Analysis: Minimum Wage In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Aaron Kaufman

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

Oregon’s current minimum wage of $9.25 per hour is unsustainable as it does not provide adequate nutritional resources or housing for full time employees. Additionally, employers of minimum wage workers often rely on social safety net benefits for their workers which effectively subsidize wages. This creates an unnecessary burden on the taxpayer. Oregon Senate Bill 1532 increases the minimum wage incrementally within Portland’s Metropolitan Area to $14.75 in 2022. This wage provides full time minimum wage workers enough income for adequate nutrition and reasonable housing while reducing reliance on social safety net programs.

How Has Religiosity Influenced The Restrictiveness Of Marriage Immigration Policy In Serbia, Denmark, And The United States?, Uros Prokic

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

The following paper draws attention and investigates the impact of religion, specifically religiosity, on the development of marriage immigration policy in Serbia, Denmark, and the United States. In directly comparing between the three states, significant evidence suggests that religiosity has clearly influenced the restrictiveness of marriage immigration policy altogether. Whether indirectly or indirectly, through a defined politico-religious institution or a call to cultural religious tradition, the fact remains that religion presents a powerful force in influencing the restriction of marriage immigration policy. Whether through its concern for ethnic purity, cultural homogeneity, or sexuality, religiosity remains a powerful factor when discussing …
