Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

The Tri-City Service District (TCSD) and Clackamas County Service District #1 (CCSD #1), both of Clackamas County, requested that the Population Research Center (PRC) at Portland State University produce long-term population forecasts for each of the two sewer service districts. In addition, CCSD#1 requested that forecasts also be developed to include the entire city of Damascus to account for possible future annexation into its district; and the city of Milwaukie, as CCSD#1 leases services to Milwaukie. The forecast horizon extends 30 years from 2010 to 2040, and projections are produced in 5-year intervals. For the 2010-2015 interval, forecast numbers for …

Oregon's population grew at an average annual rate of 1.81 percent during the 1990 to 1998 period. The total population increased by 425,000 during the eight-year period, reaching a population of 3,267,550 on July 1, 1998. Current annual rates of growth are above the U.S. national average of 1.04 percent.

Most of the way through the 1990s, the Oregon counties experiencing the fastest average growth rates are located along the 1-5 corridor and in central Oregon. Using 1990 U.S. Census data, this report has documented the characteristics of people moving to and from Oregon between 1985 and 1990. Substantial migration occurred during this time with about 404,000 people moving to Oregon and about 281,000 people leaving Oregon. Approximately one half of the people moving to Oregon came from California and Washington and about 60% of the people leaving Oregon moved to these two states. Differentials were found in the characteristics of in- and out-migrants. In particular, in-migrants were more likely to be below poverty, 65 years of age and older, and have difficulty speaking English than …

Population estimates for 1992 show that Multnomah County (605,000) continues to have substantially more people than any other Oregon county. Washington County is the second most populous county (340,000}; Clackamas County (294,500) has surpassed Lane County (293,700) for the third most populous county. In 1991, Lane County had 2,200 more persons than Clackamas County (290,900 vs. 288,700). At the other end of the population spectrum, six counties have fewer than 8,000 people.
