“Imagine Being Homophobic In 2022 In This Economy?!”: Bosniak, Croat, And Serb Perceptions Of Social Justice, Mehmet Yavuz

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

After the three-year war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia finally signed the Dayton Peace Accords (DPA) in 1995, thereby ending one of Europe’s most violent conflicts. Although the DPA provided a significant opportunity for communities to construct a new state based on the rule of law, freedom, democracy, and human rights, it failed to create a united civic identity and a well-functioning state with strong democratic policies and the ability to protect people’s human rights. The new generation of youth face unemployment, exclusion, lack of educational opportunities, and poor economic and political conditions while they are …

Reconciling Women, Peace, And Security And Conflict Transformation Through Conflict Transformation Education In Afghan Refugee Communities, Ava Strasser

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

This research seeks to understand how conflict transformation can be furthered by the inclusion of women in peace processes, as affirmed by the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, through engagement with Conflict Transformation Education (CTE). This intervention proposes a community-centered CTE workshop in Afghan refugee communities in Pakistan, following the efforts of displaced Afghan women in conducting community peace efforts, including running schools within and outside refugee camps and the provision of humanitarian aid (Rostami-Povey, 2007; “The Future,” 2021). As such, displaced Afghan women and girls have played a critical role in peace processes and are uniquely positioned at …

Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse, and Child Abuse in Humanistic Child Custody Mediation

By: Toran Hansen, Alexia Georgakopoulos, and Lizyvette Ramos

Previous episodes of domestic violence (DV), substance abuse (SA), or child abuse (CA) are of particular concern to the court and involve special mediation protocols. Mediators in child custody must be sensitive to the needs of children and co-parents, particularly in cases involving trauma. Mediators handling these types of cases must be aware of relevant issues to effectively manage a custodial plan agreement, such as children’s safety and best interest, emotional concerns and strong feelings, communication, reporting the abuse to …

Various countries in the world have been reeling under this crisis of violent conflict which is the result of the atrocities, violent attitude amongst the people in various countries, particularly the LDCs and the African countries where these have been in existence since long and have been more or less become a part and parcel of the human existence in these countries. Mapuche Women's Cooperative And Sustainable Development, Peter Kent Nov 2023

Mapuche Women's Cooperative And Sustainable Development, Peter Kent

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

This study looks at a Mapuche cooperative (Chol-Chol) in southern Chile. The review focuses on how this woman owned and run enterprise overcomes primarily culturally ingrained indigenous biases, and how these women deal with a dominant Euro-centric culture that refuses to acknowledge them both as a distinct group within Chile and as capable and contributing members of the Chilean economy.

The study follows two specific members of the cooperative. One is the Executive Director of the organization, charged with oversight of the cooperative members, from financial accountability to negotiations, within the group and outside of the group with local municipal …

What Is Peace For Victims? Understanding The Pitfall Of Liberal Peacebuilding In The Chittagong Hill Tracts From ‘Below’, Tareq Hossain Khan Mr Nov 2023

What Is Peace For Victims? Understanding The Pitfall Of Liberal Peacebuilding In The Chittagong Hill Tracts From ‘Below’, Tareq Hossain Khan Mr

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Title of the proposal: What is Peace for Victims? Understanding the Pitfall of Liberal Peacebuilding in the Chittagong Hill Tracts from ‘Below’

Liberal peace settlements are inherently vulnerable since almost 40 percent of ‘peace agreements’ turned into a war over the first decade (Collier, 2008: 105). It has produced a widespread debate on the benefits and approaches of liberal peace-building efforts today as the peace interventions violate central liberal peace-ideas such as adherence to the democratic procedure in decision-making. By posing a moral question of how an organization can promote liberal peace and implement the related practices without including the …

Expanding Sites For Peacebuilding: Decolonizing Education And Research To Retrieve Cultural And Critical Sources Of Knowledge, Anya Russian, Marc B. Kuly, Heidi Lamb, Jennifer Tesoro

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

This panel considers the ideological, intellectual, personal, and practical dimensions of peacebuilding. It explores how various educational spaces, self-inquiry, and theory can bring attention to cultural predicaments and communities that are frequently neglected, omitted, or misunderstood in peacebuilding.

  • In settler-colonial states, schooling is a process of naturalizing inequality which can be exposed and potentially interrupted through the application of peace and conflict studies methods and theories.
  • As academic institutions seek to address gender-based violence taking place both on campuses and online, approaches may fall short in considering the institution’s continued entrenchment in colonialism. Further decolonization is needed to better address …

Exploring Alternative Approaches To Peace: Traditions, Beliefs And Memories In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Yvon Muya Cimanga Nov 2023

Exploring Alternative Approaches To Peace: Traditions, Beliefs And Memories In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Yvon Muya Cimanga

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

This paper examines alternative dispute resolution mechanisms that stakeholders could address. In countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the political agreements reached in recent years with drums beating have not ceased to show their limits (Autesserre, 2006; Kibisswa, 2015). In addition to the wars that have continued between the different actors, tensions remain persistent between some communities. How can these traditional peace agreements be strengthened and foster lasting peace for the benefit of society as a whole? The research draws on the richness of social and cultural practices within Congolese communities and suggests original models of conflict …

Exploring Alternative Approaches To Peace: Traditions, Beliefs And Memories In The Democratic Republic Of Congo, Yvon Muya Cimanga

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

The paper discusses alternative conflict resolution mechanisms that researchers, conflict management practitioners and policy makers could consider. In countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, political agreements reached in recent years to the sound of drums have continued to show their limits (Autesserre, 2006; Kibisswa, 2015). In addition to the ongoing wars, tensions remain high between some ethnic communities. How can these traditional peace agreements be strengthened, and sustainable peace fostered for the benefit of society as a whole? The research draws on the richness of social and cultural practices within Congolese communities and suggests original models of …

Who's Looking: Listening For The Hidden Story Of Women's Peace Leadership Learning, Robin Neustater Feb 2021

Who's Looking: Listening For The Hidden Story Of Women's Peace Leadership Learning, Robin Neustater

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Globally, women engage in a multiplicity of agentic roles advocating for peace in their communities. Their involvement comes from an experienced or perceived need and the desire to do something about it. Women are recognized as crucial and competent actors in building peace, in post-war, and post genocide, and, in peace processes and negotiations and women’s community peacebuilding. In communities, women have proven themselves as leaders, bringing socio-cultural, economic and political positive change, while facing significant challenges and obstacles Yet, their expertise and efforts are seldom recognized or translated into positions of decision-making power. We do not know a great …

Conflict Resolution In The Virtual World: The Impact Of Covid-19 On New Ways Of Doing Business, Eileen P. Petzold-Bradley

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Overview

The world-wide-web development in the 1990s has led to the Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) movement over the last two decades. As digital and internet technology has become globally widespread, discovering new ways of using online tools for dispute resolution is becoming more prevalent. Living in a digital culture, “also known as digitality or digitalism,” has become a norm for our post-modern society. As we continue to witness in the conflict resolution field, incorporating technology into the dispute resolution processes is becoming more commonplace for practitioners.

As ODR continues to be seen ripe for innovation and as a valuable tool …

Media Depictions Of Workplace Bullying, Maria C. Georgo Phd Feb 2021

Media Depictions Of Workplace Bullying, Maria C. Georgo Phd

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

This presentation discusses media representations of workplace bullying. We often spend more time with the people we work with and our social media outlets, than our own families or friends, so it just makes sense to take a closer look at workplace bullying and media. Workplace bullying is a topic that becomes uncomfortable quickly. It seems no one wants to listen when someone wants to share of the abuse or trauma they experience at work. We often shut down and feel as if it is almost 'too personal'; even find ourselves demeaning or belittling 'the complaint'. Yet workplace bullying is …

A Study Investigating Depictions Of Workplace Bullying In Hollywood Films, Alexia Georgakopoulos, Maria Georgo

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

The presentation will focus on the investigative portrayal and depiction of workplace bullying from a sample of 100 popular Hollywood films over the past two decades. It will highlight the theoretical underpinnings of film theory, social construction theory, and symbolic interaction theory. The Hymes’ SPEAKING Model, a well-established ethnographic communication method (Hymes, 1974), will also be discussed because of its rich interpretive and descriptive nature and its focus on analyzing communication and interaction in terms of both verbal and nonverbal exchanges. The findings shed new light on understanding the portrayals of workplace bullying in contemporary films and how this impacts …

Crises Beyond Nationalities, J P. Linstroth Feb 2021

Crises Beyond Nationalities, J P. Linstroth

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

The aim of my presentation titled, Crises Beyond Nationalities, is to discuss the topics of “immigration and racism”, “nationalism and terrorism”, “genocide”, “racial trauma”, “biology, neuroscience, and humanity”, and “empathy, love, and peace” so as not only to theorize about these complex issues but to point to ways forward with some progressive thinking. If the topics of “racism and immigration” are isolated without discussing their broader associations such as with nationalism and violence, or in the most extreme with genocide, then the arguments are not broad enough. As an anthropologist and peace activist, it is important to analyze such …

Power, Emotions, And Violent Conflicts, Daniel Rothbart Feb 2021

Power, Emotions, And Violent Conflicts, Daniel Rothbart

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Hatred, fear, and disdain—these are emotions that drive conflict protagonists to commit acts of violence against their adversaries. Conventional thinking among conflict analysts holds that the private realm of negative emotions exhibited by conflict actors is distinct fundamentally from the public world of objective causal drivers of conflict, such as poverty, structural violence and proliferation of small arms. However, such conventional thinking regarding this inherent duality of emotions and power cannot for the social-psychic force of affect emotions that intersects with the conflict dynamics. In many conflict settings, the release of such a force is a political act, with the …

Metro De Medellín: Urban Infrastructure And Historical Memory In The Creation Of Territorial Belonging And Identity, Phoenix Paz, Paula-Andrea Valencia-Londoño

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Medellín and its sister cities in the Valle de Aburrá, Colombia is are renowned for their polarized past, a site of violent encounter between drug cartels, paramilitary groups, urban guerillas, and national forces from the 1970s until today. However, for over a century, it has also been a beacon of hope for thousands of people forcibly displaced by the country’s rural inter intercity violence or hoping to better their lives through participating in the growing industrial sector. In November 1995, just two years after the death of Pablo Escobar and the dissolution of the Medellín Cartel, the Metro of Medellín …

Wellbeing And Resilience: A Grounded Theory Using A Trauma-Informed Lens For A Healing-Centered Peacebuilding, Angi D. Yoder-Maina

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

In many parts of the world, entire generations and nations live in chronic violence and have existed in survival mode for decades. The exposure to violence has long-lasting effects that are not well accounted for in conflict analysis, stabilization efforts, peacebuilding, and governance initiatives. Extreme exposure to violence, abuse, neglect, and marginalization negatively affects levels of resilience and the ability of affected nations to transition from war to peace. Symptoms associated with trauma in individuals influence all levels of society and aspects of governance and security when large segments of a population are affected. There are three mainstream responses: the …

Towards A Theology Of Conflict Transformation In Churches Through Social Media, Adebayo O. Afolaranmi Feb 2021

Towards A Theology Of Conflict Transformation In Churches Through Social Media, Adebayo O. Afolaranmi

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

The society we live in cannot avoid conflict. The church in particular is not devoid of conflict of all kinds. Church leaders and other stakeholders in the church have not only to resolve these conflicts, they have to also transform the conflicts and ensure that people live in peaceful co-existence as much as it is possible. The advent of the Internet in general and social media in particular has affected the way people are doing things tremendously. This includes conflict transformation in the church as well. This paper gives a brief introduction to conflict transformation in general and conflict transformation …

Indigenous Monitoring And Evaluation: Assessing Local Impacts Of Peace Practice, Gearoid Michael Millar, Sukanya Podder Feb 2021

Indigenous Monitoring And Evaluation: Assessing Local Impacts Of Peace Practice, Gearoid Michael Millar, Sukanya Podder

Peace and Conflict Studies Journal Conference

Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS) has experienced substantial growth over the past 70 years. However, some have recently argued that the field has calcified in problematic ways; producing professionalized graduates, restricted perspectives, and standardized techniques that limit its ability to respond to different challenges, and particularly within divergent cultures and contexts. These concerns have found expression in the growth of the “critical peace” literature over the past decade, which has noted the diversity of conflict-affected societies, the lack of “local ownership” of peace practice, and the need for locally grounded tools for evaluating that practice. In addition, this paper will …

Unspoken Factors In Organizational Decision-Making: A Case Study, Kevin S. Bottomley Jan 2021

Unspoken Factors In Organizational Decision-Making: A Case Study, Kevin S. Bottomley

The Qualitative Report Conference

The sample consisted of 22 participants including C-level, senior executives, and administrative support personnel for a large nonprofit organization in the southeastern United States. The results of the study indicate that unspoken factors exist within organizations, however it is difficult to surface these unspoken factors within a group. This appears to influence the amount of information that it shared in the decision-making process. The present study is a first attempt to operationalize the hidden dimensions proposed by the Covert Process Model (Marshak & Katz, 2001). The research employs an inductive approach based on the assumption that some level of hidden …
