Defining The Police Mission, Devin Neal
Defining The Police Mission, Devin Neal
Criminology Student Work
Directives and duties of law enforcement have changed drastically over time. Today there is little agreement within society regarding what is needed and wanted from police. Even within the police ranks, it is unclear whether there is a single view of what “good” police work is (and if so, what that looks like). An officer may learn what “good” policing is from numerous channels including departmental missions, informal cultures, personal characteristics, and community contexts. Officers’ opinions may also derive from personal beliefs about policing, personality traits, and/or attitudes toward police work. The purpose of this study is to determine what …

Yet the lack of established promising practices coupled with limited training and support on how to support students’ emotional well-being creates confusion and self-doubt. This conceptual article explores teacher experiences of teaching during a pandemic, missed opportunities, and highlights the need to …

College Student Empowerment And Impact Through Community Mentoring: An Evaluation Of Strong Women, Strong Girls, Amanda Moser-Shick
Community Engagement Student Work
The contributions made by college students as volunteer mentors are incredibly valuable in building our communities; and it is equally valuable to recognize the outcomes experienced by college students through such experiences. This experience positions college student mentors as learners and leaders, and examination of such roles must consider such complexity. This paper examines the outcomes experienced by college student mentors through the nonprofit organization Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG). A mixed methods program evaluation was completed that utilized secondary data from SWSG to examine outcomes experienced by the college student program participants. The three key evaluation questions were: (1) …

Community Engagement Student Work
This workshop taught self-compassion as a tool to mitigate effects of toxic masculinity on male youth. Males ages 16-26 were given a definition of toxic masculinity and reviewed how expectations of it are taught and reinforced through Harro’s Cycle of Socialization (2010). They then learned about Kristin Neff’s theory of self-compassion. Participants then reflected on one instance of toxic masculinity that they had faced before, either as a perpetrator or a victim of it, using one chosen element of self-compassion. One key finding included 100% of participants agreeing they could see themselves using self-compassion when facing pressures of masculinity. In …

The white savior narrative can be seen in a number of different places, including community- engaged learning courses at higher education institutions. Engaging The Heart And The Mind: Mindfulness In Service-Learning, Tevin Monroe
Community Engagement Student Work
Service-learning is a pedagogy which allows students to test their classroom knowledge in real- world scenarios, while also serving a greater good. Mindfulness is one suggested practice to guide students’ reflection, and to promote the more equitable practice of critical service-learning. Through an interactive virtual workshop, students in a civic engagement fellowship program were taught principles of mindfulness and how they may be …

Community Engagement Student Work
Sexual assault is still, to this day, a problem that many groups face, particularly People of Color (POC). Although there has been notable progress made in regard to laws, policies, and societal exceptions, there are barriers in achieving sexual assault reform. The progress that has been made up to date has benefited the majority, but the progress has inequitably addressed sexual assault for POC. The history of the United States’ treatment of People of Color has hindered effective reforms for POC survivors. Expectations of sexual assault survivors and outdated misinformation and stereotypes further damage any progress made in regard to …

Forensic expert witnesses and their testimony, especially, are becoming increasingly important regarding accuracy and delivery.
