Once Upon An American Dream: What The American Dream Means To Different People Aug 2021

Once Upon An American Dream: What The American Dream Means To Different People

Symposium of Student Scholars

One of the most prominent ethoses of the United States of America is that of the “American Dream.” While James Truslow Adams was the person to coin the term “American Dream,” the concept dates back to the Declaration of Independence, which states that all men have the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” While the “American Dream” can be thought of as a single concrete goal, Ştiuliuc argues, however, that “it constitutes a cultural narrative with manifold implications in the multiple and distinct immigrant stories that created America” (2011:364). In order to determine the validity of this …

How Theatre Produced By Autistic People Dismantles The Medical Model Of Disability, Ira Eidle Aug 2021

How Theatre Produced By Autistic People Dismantles The Medical Model Of Disability, Ira Eidle

Symposium of Student Scholars

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disability that has a long history of being misunderstood. Said misunderstandings have led to falsehoods about autism and autistic people. The stigma surrounding autism encourages non-autistic people to see themselves as the best advocates for autism, leading to non-autistic people speaking over autistic people constantly. This has come to be known as the medical model of disability. Most autistic people do not consider autism to be a mental illness or disorder. (Kupferstein 2019) That is why when autistic people become informed on these aspects and band together, those misunderstandings can be mitigated. One such way is …

Home Sweet Home: An Architectural Analysis Of Houses During The Middle Mississippian Period In The Etowah River Valley, Jordan Farkas

Symposium of Student Scholars

The Mississippian period lasted from AD 1000 to AD 1550. It is divided into three different subperiods, Early (AD 1100-1200), Middle (AD 1200-1375), and Late (AD 1375-1550). Mississippian life, in general, is characterized by a ranked society, large villages located on floodplains near major rivers, a subsistence base centered on maize agriculture, as well as the use of triangular-shaped projectile points in hunting and new forms and decorative motifs on pottery for cooking and storage. One of the biggest developments in the Mississippian period revolves around house architecture and construction practices. After AD 1200, house design shifts away from rectangular …

Try It! Learn To Improve Guides And Websites Using Design Research Methods, Ashley Hoffman, Amy Barker

Faculty and Research Publications

Keeping our libraries “Open to All” includes providing online content that students can easily navigate whenever and wherever they are. Designing from the student perspective requires data, but design research methods can be intimidating and time-consuming. During this interactive session, you’ll learn two design research techniques, card sorting and task-based usability testing. You will gain hands-on experience in planning, designing, and conducting both research methods, including practical tips we gleaned from our own redesign of our research guides.

Interprofessional Practice And Education: Holistic Approaches To Complex Health Care Challenges, Monica Nandan, Patricia Scott

Faculty and Research Publications

The incidence of chronic health conditions continues to rise worldwide. As a result, many groups and decision makers are calling for greater use of interprofessional health care teams and education to effectively address the social, psychological, biological, environmental, and economic dimensions inherent in these health care challenges. This article examines interprofessional practice (IPP) and interprofessional education (IPE) and addresses the following questions: (1) What is IPP; (2) What is IPE; (3) What competencies are necessary to effectively engage in IPP; (4) Who should be educated to serve on IPP health delivery teams; and (5) What educational model can best prepare …

Student Performance In A Principle Of Microeconomics Course Under Hybrid And Face-To-Face Delivery, P. Verhoeven, T. Rudchenko Nov 2013

Student Performance In A Principle Of Microeconomics Course Under Hybrid And Face-To-Face Delivery, P. Verhoeven, T. Rudchenko

Faculty and Research Publications

Designing a hybrid course entails the challenge of choosing learning activities for each of the face-to-face and online environments--and sequencing and coordinating the activities across the two environments--to promote student attainment of the course’s learning objectives. This paper presents a study comparing student performance in an undergraduate Principles of Microeconomics course taught by the same instructor under hybrid (n = 51) and face-to-face (n = 24) delivery. The percentage of hybrid students completing the course (71%) was not significantly different (chi-square = .61, p = .433) than that (79%) of the face-to-face students. A regression analysis controlling for student GPA …

The Information Technology Agreement: Sui Generis Or Model Stepping Stone?, Xuepeng Liu, Catherine L. Mann Jan 2009

The Information Technology Agreement: Sui Generis Or Model Stepping Stone?, Xuepeng Liu, Catherine L. Mann

Faculty and Research Publications

The Information Technology Agreement signed in 1996 is a unique trade agreement. At initial negotiation, it included less than 10 countries, by inception it ‘multilateralized’ to 44 countries and now includes 70 (of the 151) WTO members. At inception, negotiated product coverage was broad and generalized, rather than achieved via ‘request-offer’ by tariff line; it now covers 97% of trade in IT products. At inception, the signatories agreed to a timetable and specific staged tariff reductions to achieve zero tariffs on all covered products; only a few signatories asked to deviate from that common schedule. By all accounts, the agreement …
