Prismatic Blade Production In The Lower Cacaulapa Valley, Honduras: Implications For A Late Classic Political Economy, William J. Mcfarlane, Edward M. Schortman Dec 2017

Prismatic Blade Production In The Lower Cacaulapa Valley, Honduras: Implications For A Late Classic Political Economy, William J. Mcfarlane, Edward M. Schortman

Anthropology Papers and Presentations

Investigations of ancient political economies frequently focus on craft production. How manufacturing is organized can provide critical insights on more than the economy because social interactions and political processes are also involved. Here we consider how the acquisition, fabrication, and distribution of obsidian blades figured in the political strategies of craftworkers and elites within the Late Classic (AD 600–800) lower Cacaulapa Valley, northwestern Honduras. This evidence provides insights into the organization of craft manufacture across southeastern Mesoamerica and suggests that current models do not capture the varied production strategies that may be pursued within the same polity.

The Climax Of Long-Run Economic Growth, Paul Kim Jun 2016

The Climax Of Long-Run Economic Growth, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

Economic Growth is the most popular topic today in economics. Particularly, the most wanted question is; why long run economic growth rare is declining? But at the same time, it is the most confusing subject in economics today and that could be one of the reason why it is most wanted subject' for the following two reasons: (1) the lack of clear identification of meaning of the declining growth rate; (2) the lack of new economic theory to assess a new problem when we say, "declining economic growth rate." In reference to (2), we are facing a new issue and …

Labor Mobility Causes U.S. Gdp To Fluctuate, Paul Kim Mar 2016

Labor Mobility Causes U.S. Gdp To Fluctuate, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

The author proposes that labor immobility was the major factor which hindered the continuous expansion of GDP in the U.S. during the period following the Great Recession. The author examines what caused labor to become immobile as the economy began to expand.

A New Economic Growth Theory #2: How To Overcome An Obstacle To Economic Growth, Paul Kim Jan 2016

A New Economic Growth Theory #2: How To Overcome An Obstacle To Economic Growth, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

In this paper the author will establish the hypothesis that the fluctuation of GDP depends on labor mobility. The author bases this on the fact that economic research pointed out that the US had the highest labor mobility among 7 advanced nations when the US achieved the highest labor productivity growth rate. A nation with lesser labor mobility had a lower GDP. The purpose of this paper is to explain how true the hypothesis is from a single nation's perspective using the US economy as a case study.

Site 23ja275: Preliminary Report Of Investigations, June 15 - July 9, William Mcfarlane

Anthropology Papers and Presentations

During the summer of 2015 the Johnson County Community College Midwest Archaeological Field School conducted investigations at 23JA275. 23JA275 is located in southwestern Jackson County, Missouri along the bank of Longview Lake, which is part of the Little Blue River. Based on the presence of diagnostic lanceolate points, the site is associated with the Nebo Hill phase and dates to the Late Archaic. This report summarizes the scope of fieldwork and presents the preliminary findings of our efforts. Our results confirm that 23JA275 is a relatively large (15000 m2) seasonally occupied Late Archaic residential camp. Although significant bioturbation has occurred, …

A New Labor Productivity Growth Rate Equation, Paul Kim Jul 2015

A New Labor Productivity Growth Rate Equation, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

This paper presents a new economic growth theory, which enables us to compute labor productivity growth rate (r) as follows:

r = r1 - r2 ....(1)

r1 indicates labor productivity growth rate contributed by the factors which promote or increase the labor productivity such as capital and technology.

r2 indicates labor productivity growth rate reduced by factors which hinder or decrease labor productivity growth rate. Such factors include activities of redistribution of power and income.

The Right Perspective In Business Education, Paul Kim Mar 2015

The Right Perspective In Business Education, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

The development of economic theories derived by mathematical exposition has been explosive in the past, but the interpretation of economic theories has remained extremely primitive for long time say for more than fifty years because, the assumption, which underlies the use of mathematics, has not been formerly scrutinized. Consequently, teachers of economic theories have misled their students in interpreting economic theories and business models. My concern in this paper is to put business education in the right perspective.

Thus, one of the purposes of this paper is to reintroduce a model[1], which I have developed previously, by which …

A Fundamental Of Scientific Inquiry In Economics, Paul Kim Jan 2015

A Fundamental Of Scientific Inquiry In Economics, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

Mathematics has made significant contributions to the development of economics theories in the past. An emphasis on the use of mathematics has been extensive in economics. However, the assumption, which underlies the use of mathematics, has not been formerly scrutinized. Consequently, errors in the development of economic theories have been unnoticed and misleading theories have been established in economic science. The objective of this article is to develop a model, which can test whether or not an application of mathematics into an economic theory is valid, thus putting mathematics in a proper perspective in economic science.

Smiths Fork Archaeological Site (23cl223), Smiths Fork Campground, Clay County, Mo, William Mcfarlane, Miranda Suri

Anthropology Papers and Presentations

Previous survey and excavation identified 23CL223 (the Smith's Fork archaeological site) as a possible Steed-Kisker phase household with intact sub-plow zone deosits and multiple loci of cultural activity, including a pit feature and a hearth. Our work was designed to explore the potential this site held for shedding light on Steed-Kisker lifeways by expanding excavations beyond the previously noted pit feature. To this end, we systematically excavated six 1m x 1m units, which revealed extensive disturbance from modern farming activities that may have damaged or destroyed in situ evidence of a Steed-Kisker house. A total of 55 artifacts, consisting of …

A New Economic Growth Theory: An Obstacle To Economic Growth, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

This paper deals with the steps what a nation must be prepared to take in order to sustain its economic growth rate when it enters the advanced stage. It is expected that a nation’s growth rate will decline as it enters the advanced stage, according a theory which the author introduces in this paper. It would be effective to avoid the obstacles if they know the kind of obstacles they might face in the advanced stage. Once the obstacles that hinder economic growth are engraved in institutions, it would be difficult to change the nature of existing institutions to remove …

An Economic Theory In Action In Asia, Paul Kim May 2014

An Economic Theory In Action In Asia, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

Our studies of economic development in our series at Paul Kim’s Asian Study Center at JCCC focus on having practical application or to be useful to our life not intending to build scientific or mathematical theories, which are often far detached from real life. This means that our studies seek for an inspiration or a new insight and target our thought to capture the right things to do at a right moment in history, not just theoretical or mathematical work. We predict the future of economic growth and show the crucial elements of economic growth at a particular moment in …

Reconsidering The Reality Of Southeastern Mesoamerica: Continuity, Diversity, And Inter-Valley Interaction In Western Honduras, William J. Mcfarlane, Miranda K. Stockett Suri Apr 2014

Reconsidering The Reality Of Southeastern Mesoamerica: Continuity, Diversity, And Inter-Valley Interaction In Western Honduras, William J. Mcfarlane, Miranda K. Stockett Suri

Anthropology Papers and Presentations

The late fifth century AD was a time of rapid transformation in non-‐Maya southeastern Mesoamerica. From this time forward, the landscape of western Honduras would become filled with increasingly complex polities and rising populations. So too is there evidence for a distinctive change in material culture, such as the development of widely shared regional polychrome ceramic traditions and the stabilization of obsidian exchange networks. Arguably, more than any other period in prehistory, it is during the Late Classic that a unique cultural identity emerges from this part of southeastern Mesoamerica. In this paper we seek to answer the question, can …

Meta-Analysis Of The Book: "Privilege, Power And Difference" -- A Review Of The Dimensions Of Institutional Segregation As Psychological Paradox, Alexej Savreux

Sociology Student Papers and Presentations

This paper analyzes and synthesizes concepts and alternative perspectives of sociologist and author Allan G. Johnson’s book “Privilege, Power and Difference” through the lens of the sociological imagination. The first phase of the review addresses the different chapter dimensions of the concept (or purported abstraction) of ‘inequality’ as social, economic and historical concretion. The model is later elaborated upon and the work extrapolated into a meta-theoretical analysis of the first seven chapters of the textbook. By identifying and reviewing the principal points within the book, we present a multitude of vantage points by which continuation and assimilation of material in …

Using Gimlet To Improve Service At The Library, Barry J. Bailey, Mark J. Swails, Jessica Tipton

Library Papers and Presentations

In 2011, Johnson County Community College’s Billington Library first piloted and then implemented a low-cost online reference statistics tool called Gimlet. The system replaced an outmoded and inaccurate pen-and-paper statistics system. This paper details the struggles and advantages of this change. Implementation and training programs are discussed, as well as strategies for generating staff buy-in. Both the expected and unexpected advantages of a Gimlet based online system are explored, and future directions for the system are described.

Libraries looking for a very low cost, easy to implement electronic statistics solution should consider Gimlet. The experience of JCCC’s Billington Library can …

U.S. Academic Library Consortia: A Review, Judith E. Guzzy Jan 2010

U.S. Academic Library Consortia: A Review, Judith E. Guzzy

Sabbatical Projects

Few libraries are strangers to the concept of library consortia – institutional groups that collaborate to purchase software, systems, electronic resources, or other information‐sharing products and services. Most academic libraries are members of at least one consortium, and many belong to multiple consortia. However, consortia vary widely in the services they offer and in how they are structured. This project, carried out in the fall of 2009, focused on a review of academic library consortia that:

(A) Included two‐year colleges, either exclusively or as part of a joint consortial arrangement with four‐year colleges and universities; and

(B) Purchased or licensed …
