The Image Of Schizophrenia In Spain's Healthcare System, Meghan Webb Jan 2024

The Image Of Schizophrenia In Spain's Healthcare System, Meghan Webb

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

Schizophrenia affects thousands of people in Spain and is one of the most serious mental health disorders in existence. Despite its this characteristic, schizophrenia did not always get the proper attention it deserved within the country’s healthcare system. This was largely due to the influence that the Spanish government had, and continues to have, over the healthcare system, giving it the power to choose how the disorder was represented. Therefore, what does that mean for schizophrenia in Spain’s healthcare system today? This essay will explore the ways in which schizophrenia was represented in Spain’s healthcare system through an examination of …

Income Source Effect Of Expectations And Seriousness On Spending Behavior, Ethan Sweeney Jan 2024

Income Source Effect Of Expectations And Seriousness On Spending Behavior, Ethan Sweeney

Economics Honors Papers

Mental accounting bias is the practice of people categorizing money and making financial decisions based on those categories without being explicitly cognizant of these groupings. Income sourcing is a type of mental accounting bias when people spend money differently based on how they came into possession of that money. This study focused on measuring various forms of income sourcing and their impact on spending behavior. In particular, this study analyzed how people make spending decisions when they have earned money in either a frivolous or a serious manner, and alternatively how people make spending decisions when they have either an …

Gis-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis For Marine Energy Site Selection: A Case Study Comparison Between Puerto Rico And Hawaii, Sarah Hall Jan 2024

Gis-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis For Marine Energy Site Selection: A Case Study Comparison Between Puerto Rico And Hawaii, Sarah Hall

Environmental Studies Honors Papers

Geospatial information systems (GIS) enable easy visualization of geospatial data representing different criteria important for optimal siting of marine energy projects. Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) is a geospatial analysis method that facilitates the evaluation of multiple, usually overlapping, site criteria. While GIS-based MCDA has been used extensively for land-based renewable energy projects, limited research exists on its application to marine-based renewable energy projects. Similarly, most literature overlooks the integration of social or environmental justice data. This project applies GIS-based MCDA to conduct site selection analysis for two marine renewable energy (MRE) projects in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. The results for …

Enduring Memories From The Covid Pandemic, Matthew Fajfer

Psychology Honors Papers

The Covid pandemic brought with it a cascade of effects that drastically altered each of our lives. The liminality and uncertainty of this crucial period for students during this time are certain to have long-lasting implications on psychology and personality. The purpose of this study was to examine the enduring memories of students and identify trends among these memories. The research design was correlational, using online questionnaires and multiple correlations. Participants were 97 college students aged 18-24, who provided two of their most significant memories from the Pandemic, followed by responding to questionnaires including prompts that assessed affective qualities of …

Watching Together And Watching Alone: An Examination Of Audience Aesthetic And Affective Reception Of A Short Film, Madalena Rathgeber

Psychology Honors Papers

This research investigated the differences between participants’ affective response and recollection of a film, comparing two conditions, watching it alone at home (n = 21) or in an auditorium with an audience (n = 28). Participants were asked to view the short film, The Neighbors’ Window, and answer questions about the emotions they experienced during the filming, plot points and favorite moments, as well as whether any personal memories were elicited. After two weeks, they were contacted again and asked to respond to the post viewing questions again. Contrary to hypotheses, it was revealed that in the two week follow-up …

Representation In Healthcare Matters: Perspectives On Inadequate Physician Diversity And Its Potential Impact On Minority Patients, Madison Andrews Jan 2024

Representation In Healthcare Matters: Perspectives On Inadequate Physician Diversity And Its Potential Impact On Minority Patients, Madison Andrews

Sociology Honors Papers

Disparities in access to healthcare among U.S. racial and ethnic groups, including access to quality services, have existed for centuries (Gibbons, 2005), leading to inequality in health outcomes as race/ethnicity intersects with gender and socioeconomic status (Wellons et al., 2009; Yan et al., 2023). Patients from minority communities face disadvantages due to the lack of diversity amongst physicians, including communication barriers, lack of trust, lesser rapport, and lower level of comfort with doctors who are non-representative of patients’ demographics (Ha & Longnecker, 2010; Lopez et al., 2023; Maldonado et al., 2014; Weech-Maldonado et al., 2003). It is important, then, to …

Effects Of Color On Sustained Attention And Recall, Harry Steinharter Jan 2023

Effects Of Color On Sustained Attention And Recall, Harry Steinharter

Psychology Honors Papers

Sustained attention, the process by which people focus on something for a long period of time, is a well documented phenomenon. It has enormous implications for life, from tasks as complex as surgery to as mundane as driving a car. However the effect that color has on sustained attention is rarely studied. The current study examined the effect of the presence of canonical color in images versus inverted colors, or black and white images. This effect was measured via a go/no-go paradigm gradual onset continuous performance task (gradCPT). A memory task was presented after the gradCPT in order to determine …

Physical Activity, Stress, & Sexual Behavior: The Role Of Exercise In Sexual Health Of Undergraduate Students, Emily Berkeley Jan 2023

Physical Activity, Stress, & Sexual Behavior: The Role Of Exercise In Sexual Health Of Undergraduate Students, Emily Berkeley

Psychology Honors Papers

This Honors Thesis was conducted to examine and possibly influence the relationships between physical activity, stress, sexual self-concept, and sexual behavior in a sample of Connecticut College undergraduates. Prior research has shown conflicting results regarding physical activity, stress, and sexual behavior. While physical activity has been found to decrease stress and decrease sexual risk behavior in some contexts (Faurie et al., 2004; Wetherill & Fromme, 2007; Frauman, 1982; Park et al., 2021; Mor, et al., 2014), other research has also found that physical activity can increase both stress and sexual risk behavior (Vuori et al., 2011; Kulig et al., 2003; …

Hiring Discrimination In Denmark, Sweden, And Iceland: A Comparative Study Of Ukrainian And Afghan Job Applicants, Annika Brown Jan 2023

Hiring Discrimination In Denmark, Sweden, And Iceland: A Comparative Study Of Ukrainian And Afghan Job Applicants, Annika Brown

Economics Honors Papers

This paper investigates the labor market discrimination faced by job applicants from Afghanistan and Ukraine, using a correspondence test. Specifically, we examine the impact of nationality, gender, skill, and industry on positive responses from potential employers in Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden using a linear probability model. We used popular names in Afghanistan and Ukraine to create resumes that implied particular nationalities and included previous job experience in Kabul and Kyiv. Although the sample size of positive responses in Sweden and Iceland was too small to draw conclusions, employers in Denmark responded to 28 percent of the applications. For a Ukrainian, …

Mapping The Political Shifts And Impacts Of The Climate Movement In The United States, Kevin Rissmiller Jan 2023

Mapping The Political Shifts And Impacts Of The Climate Movement In The United States, Kevin Rissmiller

Government and International Relations Honors Papers

This study explores how organizations within the climate change movement accrue political power and impact federal politics in the United States. It uses twelve semi-structured open-ended interviews with national climate activists at eight organizations to map shifts within the movement. These interviews are paired with additional qualitative analysis of legislative, media, and political rhetoric to evaluate the impact of the movement on American politics. The climate movement’s impacts (establishing the Green New Deal as a legitimate policy vision, shifting the Democratic Party to the left on climate, and the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act) were made possible by a …

Connecting The Dots: Immigration Policy And Access To Higher Education For Refugees In France, Isabella Amaro Varas Dec 2022

Connecting The Dots: Immigration Policy And Access To Higher Education For Refugees In France, Isabella Amaro Varas

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

Since 2016, the increasing number of refugees in Europe accelerated the development of national and regional policies to determine their rights and access to resources. Against this backdrop, the strong politicization of migration, and the recent financial crises, refugees' access to welfare has “become a key area of concern across European democracies” (Lafleur et al. 2020). Considering public education programs as a pillar of social policy agendas in this region, this study examines French policy in order to answer the following questions: How do French immigration and education policies converge to determine refugees’ access to higher education in France? What …

Breaching Weird Psychology: Brujería As Mental Health Treatment, Emily Greenslit May 2022

Breaching Weird Psychology: Brujería As Mental Health Treatment, Emily Greenslit

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

Through this project, I am proposing that the psychology field look to brujería in order to make the field, which has been historically WEIRD-centric, more inclusive and widely applicable. However, I would like to make it clear that I am not advocating for the removal of more traditional methods of therapy and medication that have long been established in the field of psychology. These methods work effectively for many people, and there is no reason that they should not continue to be used as mental health treatment. With this being said, the limited lens through which psychologists tend to view …

Democracy And Its Discontents: The Years Of Lead And The Burdens Of History, Sohan Mewada Apr 2022

Democracy And Its Discontents: The Years Of Lead And The Burdens Of History, Sohan Mewada

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

Extremist narratives are diffuse, and mistrust of political institutions is ubiquitous in the United States. Extremist ideas espousing violent means to gain recognition and legitimacy are more common in mainstream culture. This is the United States now, but it is also Italy sixty years prior. This project uses various archival materials to explore the two decades from 1960 to 1980 defined by cycles of widespread extremism, social fracturing, and domestic terror known in Italian history as The Years of Lead. Applying this case to the United States’ current circumstances, this project argues that a democracy with the prestige of the …

China’S “Wolf Warrior” Diplomacy: A New Kind Of American Exceptionalism?, Benjamin Vazquez Jan 2022

China’S “Wolf Warrior” Diplomacy: A New Kind Of American Exceptionalism?, Benjamin Vazquez

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

China’s recent strident and aggressive foreign relations have earned Chinese diplomats the title of “wolf warriors.” These attitudes have been partially excused due to China’s successful response to many recent global crises as compared to Western states. Along with the US struggling to maintain its spheres of influence in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, China now poses a real threat to American primacy. How will China balance its newfound confidence with enduring insecurities? Is this “wolf warrior” diplomacy a valid criticism, or just an ignorant foreign perspective on how China should behave?

The Memory Of The Second World War In French Foreign Policy Discourses, Holly James Jan 2022

The Memory Of The Second World War In French Foreign Policy Discourses, Holly James

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

The discourse of politicians provides us with an important insight into a country’s notion of self and the way in which collective memory is constructed. Through a comparative analysis of speeches performed by Charles de Gaulle and Emmanuel Macron, I will explore the construction of collective memory in France and how this relates to French foreign policy-making.This study will argue that the memory of the Second World War has played a significant role in French foreign policy discourses and show that leaders continue to draw upon the past to justify their policy decisions today, particularly during discourses concerning European integration.

Examining Attitudes Toward Mental Health In Chinese Americans, Xiao Shan Jiang Jan 2022

Examining Attitudes Toward Mental Health In Chinese Americans, Xiao Shan Jiang

Psychology Honors Papers

Asian Americans are one of the fastest-growing ethnic groups in the United States with Chinese Americans being the largest group within the Asian American community (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016; Pew Research Center, 2017). Previous research has found evidence that there is a reluctance in the Chinese-American community to seek mental health services due to a fear of stigma and a tendency to define psychiatric conditions in physical rather than psychological terms. Whether these tendencies differ across generations is another question to explore. This thesis looked at both Chinese-American ethnicity and participants’ age as potential influences on attitudes toward mental health …

Psychological Factors Of Athletes And Preference For Competition Against Opponents Who Differ In Relative Standing, Emily Lorry Jan 2022

Psychological Factors Of Athletes And Preference For Competition Against Opponents Who Differ In Relative Standing, Emily Lorry

Psychology Honors Papers

Sports and competition are a large part of most cultures across the globe and their popularity only appears to be increasing. Athletic competition is increasingly becoming more about winning, results, and performance and much less about having fun. Professional athletes are no longer the only competitors facing extreme pressure to perform. Collegiate athletes and youth athletes are expected to perform at their best to earn titles for their program or scholarships to universities. Although it is becoming more common for athletes to speak about their personal struggles regarding mental health and performance anxiety, there is little to no change in …

The Relationship Between Sleep Quality And Social Media Content, Isaac Moskowitz Jan 2022

The Relationship Between Sleep Quality And Social Media Content, Isaac Moskowitz

Psychology Honors Papers

The present study investigated the relationship between social media posting behavior and sleep quality in a population of college students (N = 30) over 5 nights. Sleep duration and number of nightly disruptions were used to measure sleep quality using a smartphone app, SleepScore, that participants downloaded prior to the study. Every day after recording their sleep participants were presented with a “prompt word” and asked to make a post related to their respective prompt on the anonymous social media network Yik-Yak. A content analysis was then performed with the assistance of an independent coder in order to categorize the …

Fictional Crime-Based Dramas And The Relationship Between Violence And Mental Illness, Katharine R. Carrión Jan 2022

Fictional Crime-Based Dramas And The Relationship Between Violence And Mental Illness, Katharine R. Carrión

Psychology Honors Papers

Since its beginnings in the late 1940s, the crime-based media genre has continuously maintained its status as an entertainment favorite, and portrayals of violence and crime in the media have led to an increasingly strong, close relationship between viewers and this type of media. A problem that goes widely undiscussed about this genre is that the perpetrators of these violent crimes are often portrayed as suffering from some mental illness. The goal of this study was to understand how fictional crime-based television dramas impact general public understanding of the relationship between violence and mental illness, while also examining the best …

“Living As Art”: Performance And The Haunting Of The Japanese Diaspora, Hana Tanabe Jan 2022

“Living As Art”: Performance And The Haunting Of The Japanese Diaspora, Hana Tanabe

East Asian Languages and Cultures Department Honors Papers

In this thesis, I focus on the themes of family memory and history in relation to the Japanese diaspora, and how performance becomes an invaluable method of expression and discovery when words are inadequate. To explore these themes, I analyze the performances of three Japanese and Japanese artists, each of whom expresses their stories through a variety of genres, ranging from experimental short film and documentary to musical theater. Although the stories that the artists tell are connected by their discussion of the intergenerational impact of Japanese American incarceration in the United States during World War II, a history that …
