La República Dominicana: Las Terrenas, Stefanie M. Havemeier Apr 2015

La República Dominicana: Las Terrenas, Stefanie M. Havemeier

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Off the sandy beaches of Las Terrenas, The Dominican Republic, lies La Fundación Mahatma Gandhi and an energetic, ambitious, kind-hearted, and humble man, José Bourget, founder of the foundation. With the help of Bourget, six interns from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University lead summer camps at the foundation and in a nearby neighborhood. Children picked up trash, learned about dental hygiene, participated in new games, banged on musical instruments, and shouted out their favorite foods while learning about nutrition. The children in Las Terrenas and neighboring communities enjoyed summer camp activities but what the interns of …

Lutheran Social Services Service Learning Project, Timothy D. Immelman, Cullen T. Mcanally, Dino V. Saracco

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Background: Lutheran Social Services (LSS) is an organization whose mission is to “express the love of Christ for all people through service that inspires hope, changes lives, and builds community.” A significant part of what they do involves leading afterschool activities that promote the learning of specific academic and life skills. Those learning objectives are as stated as follows: (1) working together, (2) communication, (3) following instructions, and (4) personal boundaries. As liberal arts students, we provide external perspectives regarding ways to enhance their four learning objectives.

Because they have our help in developing new leisure activities for their students, …

Identifying Environmentally Burdened Neighborhoods In Minneapolis Through A Cumulative Approach, Chendan Yan Apr 2015

Identifying Environmentally Burdened Neighborhoods In Minneapolis Through A Cumulative Approach, Chendan Yan

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Environmental problems are not confined to political boundaries and tend to impact population beyond their sources, yet some communities are more impacted than others. This GIS project calculates a Cumulative Impact (CI) Score of environmental hazards for each neighborhood in Minneapolis based on the following four measures: environmental effects, public health effects, sensitive populations, socioeconomic factors. The higher the CI score, the more environmentally burdened a neighborhood is. The scope of this GIS project is limited and it is the hope of many environmental organizations in Minnesota that Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will take the lead and develop a more …

Relationship Between Bmi, Exercise And Milk Consumption, Morgan Potter Apr 2015

Relationship Between Bmi, Exercise And Milk Consumption, Morgan Potter

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dairy consumption, body composition, and physical activity in males and females. Consistent with previous research, we found a significant, inverse relationship between milk consumption and BMI which was slightly stronger in women. Previously, researchers have suggested that calcium influences energy metabolism by decreasing fat absorption and increasing fat oxidation. Low fat dairy intake may be associated with better overall diet quality (Poddar). Additionally, protein content in milk may suppress appetite. BF was significantly and inversely related to milk consumption in the sub-sample, but not significantly related to minutes of …

Happiness & Accounting/Finance Careers, Jacob Shrode Apr 2015

Happiness & Accounting/Finance Careers, Jacob Shrode

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

The research question I chose was "Do happiness levels vary among graduates with accounting majors who have chosen different career paths?" The method I used to get my data was a survey. Overall, the average happiness score from my survey was 4.72/6 (see table 4). The average happiness score in the U.S. is only 4.30. I did a t-test for this and got a p value of .00. With this, I can say that there is substantial evidence to suggest that people who graduate with accounting/finance majors tend to be significantly happier than the average U.S. person.

Inmigración Latina Y El Racismo En Los Estados Unidos, Robert M. Pezán Apr 2015

Inmigración Latina Y El Racismo En Los Estados Unidos, Robert M. Pezán

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

F-35 And Military Spending, Colin J. Charpentier Apr 2015

F-35 And Military Spending, Colin J. Charpentier

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

How does the F-35 Lightning II multirole fighter compare to current military airplanes in terms of costs and capabilities? This is a comparison study based around the F-35 and five other planes. The F-35 is chosen because of its status as an ongoing project and due to its controversy as a plane. This study looks at all values. It is completely numeric based allowing for objective analysis. These planes chosen for study are the F-16 C/D, F/A-18 E/F, F-22A, AV-8B Harrier II, and A-10C. These planes are chosen because the F-35 is meant to replace them in the case of …

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Does self-identification as a feminist, non-feminist, or non-labeler, affect actions, beliefs, and commitments regarding feminist ideals? Is there any dissonance between identifying with feminist beliefs and identifying with the feminist label? Will our data give us insight into education about feminist ideas at CSB/SJU (College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University)? Is the “feminist” label stigmatized on our campuses?

Breaking News: A Woman Is Running, Bridget F. Cummings Apr 2015

Breaking News: A Woman Is Running, Bridget F. Cummings

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

As women are still underrepresented in legislative offices, it is important to examine the road it takes for them to get there. Many scholars have explored gender bias in the media when covering female candidates for elected office. Fowler and Lawless (2009) uncover bias in media coverage of candidates between 1990 and 1997 in Looking for Sex in All the Wrong Places: Press Coverage and the Electoral Fortunes of Gubernatorial Candidates. This paper replicates the method used by Fowler and Lawless (2009) to examine gubernatorial candidates between 2008 and 2014. The independent variable in my research is the gender bias …

Factors Influencing The Likelihood Of Using Religion As A Coping Mechanism In Response To Life Event Stressors, Nicole R. Cornell Apr 2015

Factors Influencing The Likelihood Of Using Religion As A Coping Mechanism In Response To Life Event Stressors, Nicole R. Cornell

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Stress is an aspect of daily life. Stressors can be mentally taxing to an individual and cause negative effects when it comes to health. To combat stress, most individuals implement one or more personal coping mechanisms. However, though individuals may encounter similar stressors in life, each person combats the accompanied stress in vastly different ways. In some cases, individuals turn to religion to make sense of their circumstances and buffer their stress (Nash 2006; Jacobson, et al. 2006). Most previous research has looked at whether religion functions as an effective coping mechanism while not necessarily addressing why certain people use …

Estimating Earnings Differentials Among Military Veterans, Shawn M. Tangen Apr 2015

Estimating Earnings Differentials Among Military Veterans, Shawn M. Tangen

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This thesis analyzes whether the decision to enter the military offers a different investment in human capital as indicated by the civilian earning of veterans. Using seven one month samples from the Current Population Survey, I run three linear regressions to compare the earnings of veterans by gender, the earnings of female veterans and non-veterans, and the earnings of male veterans and non-veterans. It appears that, between 2005 and 2013, veterans enjoyed a wage premium which existed for both male and female veterans. These results suggest that military service acts as a screening device or a bridge to employment in …

Hardiness: The Key To A Well-Adjusted College Experience, Amanda M. Munsterteiger Apr 2015

Hardiness: The Key To A Well-Adjusted College Experience, Amanda M. Munsterteiger

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Hardiness is a personal attribute commonly sought in the workplace and greatly valued in students of all ages. This study examined hardiness in relation to stress, happiness, and gender. Ninety undergraduate students from two colleges in the Upper Midwest completed standard surveys on these constructs. It was hypothesized that hardiness would be negatively correlated with stress and positively correlated with happiness. It was also hypothesized that females would report higher hardiness scores than males. The first two hypotheses regarding stress and happiness were tested with bivariate correlations and were found to be significant (p < .01). These results were consistent with previous research findings. The test of the third hypothesis, by means of an independent t-test, unexpectedly revealed—contrary to the hypothesis—that males were hardier than females. Few previous studies have been conducted on the relationship between gender and hardiness. There are limitations in this study, such as sample variability and internal consistency levels, which hinder its external validity.

Happiness And Time Preference: An Empirical Analysis Of Individual Happiness And Information On Intertemporal Choice And Delaying Gratification, Daniel Flesher Apr 2015

Happiness And Time Preference: An Empirical Analysis Of Individual Happiness And Information On Intertemporal Choice And Delaying Gratification, Daniel Flesher

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Individuals tend to discount the future, meaning they value a reward more in the present than the same reward in the future. Research indicates there are several consequences to the rate one discounts the future, suggesting those who value the future more have better life outcomes. Because of the ramifications of such decisions, this study explores the dynamic of the relationship between discounting and one’s happiness. Participants indicated an indifference point for given present values for given time periods in the future, using both money and periods happiness as hypothetical rewards. These indifference points allow for the calculation of various …

My Husband Is Now A Woman? The Experiences Of Transgender Individuals In Partner Relationships, Lisa Platt Mar 2015

My Husband Is Now A Woman? The Experiences Of Transgender Individuals In Partner Relationships, Lisa Platt

Forum Lectures

How would you react on a first date if the person disclosed they used to be the other gender? Or if your partner/spouse decided to switch genders? This research examines the psychological and social challenges transgender individuals often face when seeking and maintaining romantic partner relationships. The experiences of the transgender community are beginning to receive more attention in both psychological research and mainstream culture. One area conspicuously absent is comprehensive research regarding the nature and challenges of transgender individuals' partner relationships. This study was a qualitative exploration of the transgender partner experience. Participants were recruited nationwide through convenience sampling. …

#Handsonlearning: Lessons From Student "Takeover" Of Csb/Sju Social Media, Tiffany Clements, Kelly Berg

Forum Lectures

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, CSB and SJU communication students "took over" CSB/SJU institutional profiles on Instagram and Vine for six weeks in the spring of 2014. Students in the Communication Department's New Media Applications and Analysis course planned, prepared and shared photos and video for their assigned profile. Groups were responsible for setting goals for their takeover, creating a profile of a target audience and applying lessons learned about effective branding through visual communication.

In this presentation, Associate Professor Kelly Berg and CSB/SJU Social Media Specialist Tiffany Clements discuss learning outcomes from the collaboration and takeaways for future Communications and …

People Of Faith And Prophetic Voices: The Role Of Faith Voters And Activists In Recent Minnesota Political History, Eric S. Fought Feb 2015

People Of Faith And Prophetic Voices: The Role Of Faith Voters And Activists In Recent Minnesota Political History, Eric S. Fought

Forum Lectures

In November of 2012, political scientists, other experts familiar with Minnesota politics and the general public were stunned by the comfortable defeat of two constitutional amendments by voters. Amendment one, also known as the marriage amendment, would have changed the state's constitution to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota. Amendment two, known as the voter ID or voter restriction amendment, would have required voters to show a photo ID in order to cast a vote in Minnesota elections. The Voter ID question enjoyed 80% favorability just a year before the election.

In both of the campaigns against these ballot measures, highly …

He's Sarcastic And She's Caring: Students' Stereotypes Of The Typical Male And Female Professor, Pamela L. Bacon Feb 2015

He's Sarcastic And She's Caring: Students' Stereotypes Of The Typical Male And Female Professor, Pamela L. Bacon

Psychology Faculty Publications

Gender stereotypes are prescriptive. For example, if people have a stereotype that women are warm and caring, then they also tend to have a societal prescription that women should be warm and caring. When an individual fails to fulfill a gender prescription, he or she may face social punishment. For example, if a woman is cold and uncaring, then she might be judged more harshly than a man who is cold and uncaring because the woman is violating the gender prescription but the man is not. Research on gender stereotypes suggests that students' perceptions of the best and worst college …

Skin In The Game: The Emergence Of Family-Based Anti-War Organizing In The 21st Century, Kelly Rae Kraemer Jan 2015

Skin In The Game: The Emergence Of Family-Based Anti-War Organizing In The 21st Century, Kelly Rae Kraemer

Peace Studies Faculty Publications

Since the 19th Century, feminist peacemakers have claimed a special relationship between mothers and peace, arguing that those who give birth to children have a particular interest in not seeing them killed in wars. Maternal anti-war organizing is a long-standing tradition. In the past decade, however, a number of new family-based anti-war groups—whose members include not only mothers, but also fathers, siblings, and other relatives—appeared in the United States. This chapter examines the emergence of three family-based peace movement organizations (September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Military Families Speak Out, and Gold Star Families for Peace) as vocal opponents of …

The Leisured Testes: White Ball-Breaking As Surplus Masculinity In Jackass, Christina M. Tourino Jan 2015

The Leisured Testes: White Ball-Breaking As Surplus Masculinity In Jackass, Christina M. Tourino

English Faculty Publications

In Jackass: Number Two (2006), Bam Margera allows Ryan Dunn to brand his posterior with a hot iron depicting male genitalia. Bam cannot tolerate the pain enough to remain perfectly still, so the brand touches him several times, resulting in multiple images that seem blurry or in motion. Bam’s mother, who usually plays the role of game audience for his antics, balks when she learns that her son has been hurt as well as permanently marked. She asks Dunn why anyone would ever burn a friend. “Cause it was funny,” Dunn answers.[i]

Jackass mines the body in pain as …

U.S. State Social Spending And Economic Growth, Chris Heitzig Jan 2015

U.S. State Social Spending And Economic Growth, Chris Heitzig

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

U.S. state social spending has increased both as a percentage of national GDP and a percentage of the national budget since 1960. Growth in spending across states, however, has not been uniform. Those advocating for more conservative spending argue that large social expenditure budgets dampen the growth of society as a whole. In this paper, I examine the effect that state social spending has on the growth rate of personal income per capita. I follow the model proposed by Peter Lindert (2004), who studied the relationship between social spending and economic growth at the national level. I examine the period …

The Determinants Of Chinese Household Saving During 1978-2012, Nan Zhi Jan 2015

The Determinants Of Chinese Household Saving During 1978-2012, Nan Zhi

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This project focuses on how the household saving ratio changes from 1978-2013 in China and what factors caused the changes. Based China’s household saving rate changes from 1953-2000 by using the framework of the life-cycle hypothesis, Modigliani concluded that the rate of growth income and the demographic structure are the major determinant of the rate of private saving. This project attempts to extend Modigliani’s research using the data after 2000 and take changes of Chinese policy and additional factors into consideration. Estimates of coefficients of saving function will be obtained by using OLS method to analyze the relationship between household …
