Urban Concept Car On Display At National Conference, Amy C. Radwanski

A team of six Cedarville University engineering students will showcase its work at the Meeting of the Minds Conference in Detroit, Michigan, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.

Cedarville’s team will display its Urban Concept car that it raced in July at the Shell Eco-Marathon in Houston, Texas. Shell invited Larry Zavodney, Ph.D., senior professor of mechanical engineering, and the team to display the car and showcase the students’ design in two workshop tours on the future of urban design and mobility. Other student participants will include University of Detroit Jesuit High School students displaying its two prototype vehicles.

Math Circle, a 14-week program designed to strengthen math skills for fifth- and sixth- grade students, will begin Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Cedarville University’s Engineering and Science Center. There is no cost to enroll in the program, but space is limited to 12 students. Classes are from 3:30-5 p.m. each Tuesday.

Working with professors from Cedarville’s department of science and mathematics, students will solve math problems, play math games, and talk about unique math ideas. Rather than a tutoring program, this class is designed to encourage young students and strengthen their math skills.

For the fourth consecutive year, Cedarville University’s robotics team competed in the International Roboboat Competition in Virginia Beach and came away with an award. The June 8-13 competition featured boats that performed various water maneuvers. Cedarville's team was awarded the “Biggest Bang for the Buck” honor for its accomplishments as a smaller team on a limited budget.

Engineering competitions challenge the students to think more critically and initiate excitement for technology, science, engineering, and mathematics. For the second consecutive year, a team of Cedarville University engineering students won the American Society of Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Autonomous Robotics competition. The event was held in Indianapolis.

The annual competition is open to freshmen and sophomore engineering students. Each team is required to build and program a robot that completes a task, which is selected to be specific to the host city. This year teams had to race their robots around a miniature track in honor of the Indianapolis 500. Cedarville University’s Robotic Boat team will be spending July 8-13 in Virginia Beach. But instead of working on their tans, the four team members will be preparing their boat for the three on-the-water challenges that it will face during the International RoboBoat Competition.

The International RoboBoat Competition began in 2008 and draws universities from all over the world to compete including large schools like Virginia Tech and the University of Michigan. The Creation Museum in rural Cincinnati (Hebron, Ky.) will display the bones of Ebenezer, a world-class Allosaurus specimen on Saturday, May 24. The remains of the dinosaur were excavated from the Morrison Formation of northwestern Colorado.
