Police Contacts And Attitudes Toward Police: A Study Of Race And Policing, Gary Portway

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The way in which police officers engage with general society is often under meticulous watch by countless amounts of citizens. The United States – at an unprecedented point in regards to technological advancement and education – expedites such meticulous watch in a way that it often becomes noticeable criticism. Strategies of policing such as New York City’s “stop-and-frisk” policy have ignited much criticism of police, and have caused the need for many general improvements to the way in which police facilitate. Since the structure of policing often shifts based on changes within general society, it has become a common standard …

The Environmental Impacts Of Colonialism, Lawrence Wood Dec 2015

The Environmental Impacts Of Colonialism, Lawrence Wood

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The politics of the global imperial era are having real-world environmental consequences globally, especially in the former colonies. Indifferent administration by overseas imperial powers transparently sought to enrich their home country with little to no thought about the long term environmental or political consequences for the colony. One of the main objectives of global imperialism, from the first Spanish colonies to the last of the British and Portuguese colonies, was the enhanced profitable extraction of resources. The industrial revolution fueled the need for colonial resource extraction. Industrialization and imperialism formed a positive feedback loop, in which one created a greater …

Dude Looks Like A Feminist!: Moral Concerns And Feminism Among Men, Renee F. Precopio Dec 2015

Dude Looks Like A Feminist!: Moral Concerns And Feminism Among Men, Renee F. Precopio

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Even though male participation in feminism is essential to its success, it is possible that men are reluctant to get involved in the movement because of its primary association with women (Holmgren & Hearn, 2009). This research investigated whether certain moral concerns contribute to men endorsing feminism. According to the Moral Foundations Theory there are five moral concerns: harm (i.e., the concern for someone’s physical and emotional well-being), fairness (i.e., the concern for equality and justice), ingroup (i.e., the concern for loyalty to group membership), authority (i.e., the concern for tradition and the social hierarchy), and purity (i.e., the concern …

Perceptions And Perspectives: Testing For Associations Between Perceptions Of Inequality, Autonomy, Morality And Support For Redistribution Among Bsu Students, Lucas A. Fagundes Dec 2015

Perceptions And Perspectives: Testing For Associations Between Perceptions Of Inequality, Autonomy, Morality And Support For Redistribution Among Bsu Students, Lucas A. Fagundes

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Despite claims that we exist in an “Age of Acquiescence” (Fraser, 2015) to historically high levels of inequality, Americans across wage, gender, and political leaning all desire a more equal distribution of wealth (Norton & Ariely, 2011). However, this apparent consensus doesn’t necessarily translate into support for redistribution, at least in terms of greater taxation. Rather, according to recent findings by Northwestern University Professor Leslie McCall, Americans prefer instead to address wealth inequality through the expansion of opportunity (McCall, 2011). It may be that as individual perceptions of autonomy and the availability of opportunity increases, support for traditional redistribution decreases, …

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie Dec 2015

School Shootings And Moral Panics: Differences In Media Framing Based On Race, Class, And Socioeconomic Status, Kelly Ann Lavoie

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Media coverage of school shooting incidents are constructed using various frames that differ depending on the race, class, and socioeconomic status of the victims, perpetrators, and their communities. Moral panics have arisen as a result of these frames, having been constructed to instigate fear and affect policy in ways that can have negative effects on both students in general and, in particular, minority students in urban schools. In this study, I analyzed the framing language used in news content, the demographic information of the schools in which shootings occurred, and the amount of coverage afforded to the incidents. This content …

A Qualitative Exploration Of A Massachusetts Drug Court: How Are The 10 Key Components Applied?, Isabel Pires

Master’s Theses and Projects

With the overwhelming drug offense and policy changes that occurred in the 1980s, the criminal justice system was forced to create other methods of dealing with offenders suffering from substance abuse problems. Therefore, drug court was created as a diversion program. Drug court was first created in 1989 in Florida to offer a therapeutic method to assist offenders with substance abuse problems and criminal cases. The purpose of drug court was to prevent addicts from constant contact with the criminal justice system. Drug court professionals developed a guideline based on the therapeutic jurisprudence theory called the “10 key component”. The …

Immigrants From Cabo Verde In Italy: History And Paths Of Socio-Educative Integration, Clara Silva Oct 2015

Immigrants From Cabo Verde In Italy: History And Paths Of Socio-Educative Integration, Clara Silva

Journal of Cape Verdean Studies

Cape Verdean migration to Italy started in the early sixties of the nineteenth century as an exclusively female one, mostly caused by the demand for domestic workers by bourgeois families. In the late eighties, the Cape Verdean community migrated to Italy was still composed of more than 90% of women. In 1990, the introduction of a legislation setting forth the right to family reunification allowed many women to reunite with their husbands and children remained in their homeland. In Italy, the gradual social inclusion process and the creation of a network of Cape Verdean migrants’ association, allowed to overcome all …

Ending Slavery In Cabo Verde: Between Manumission And Emancipation, 1856-1876, Lumumba H. Shabaka Oct 2015

Ending Slavery In Cabo Verde: Between Manumission And Emancipation, 1856-1876, Lumumba H. Shabaka

Journal of Cape Verdean Studies

This article explores the ending of slavery in Cabo Verde by using the Committee of Protection of Slaves and Freed-person. Rather than just following the directives from Lisbon, it shows that local leaders were reluctant to establish the institution and cautiously approached the abolition of slavery in the colony. Nevertheless, enslaved Africans and their descendants fully exploited the new laws to gain nominal freedom. Like other parts of the Atlantic world, being freed was a state between manumission and emancipation, because there were struggles over payments, ‘rights’ for the manumitted individuals and mandatory seven years services were required by law.

“This Country Does Not Have My Back!”: Youth Experiences With A Parent Threatened By Deportation, Leila Rosa

Journal of Cape Verdean Studies

Using exploratory case study methodology and a critical theoretical perspective, this study examined the impact of parental deportation on three Cape Verdean youths, in one of the largest Cape Verdean immigrant communities in Southeast New England. A particularly focus is given to their schooling experiences following parental deportation as well as their understanding of the event of parental deportation. Participants expressed feeling isolated and disconnected in school and from extended family following their parents’ involvement with Immigration services. They questioned or denied their American identity despite being citizens by birth. They described fears and feelings of uncertainty about their future. …

Cape Verde And Its Diaspora: Economic Transnationalism And Homeland Development, João Resende-Santos Oct 2015

Cape Verde And Its Diaspora: Economic Transnationalism And Homeland Development, João Resende-Santos

Journal of Cape Verdean Studies

This study examines the historical role of the diaspora in Cape Verde’s socioeconomic development. It analyzes the prospects and limitations of its diaspora as a transnational economic development resource. While it is policy oriented, the study offers a conceptual framework to analyze its diaspora engagement policies and efforts since 1975. Cape Verde has emerged as a success story. The diaspora’s contribution was one of the four essential factors behind this relative success: migration and remittances, overseas development assistance, large scale public investments, and reasonably sound policies and stewardship of public finances. Today Cape Verde confronts an adverse set of conditions …

Empirical Assessment Of Lifestyle-Routine Activity And Social Learning Theory On Cybercrime Offending, Elizabeth Phillips

Master’s Theses and Projects

The Internet and its overwhelming possibilities and applications have changed the way individuals carry out many routine activities such as going to work or school, or socializing. Social networking sites such as Facebook are ideal settings for interacting with others, and unfortunately, are also ideal settings for committing cybercrimes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the occurrence of online offending against individuals, specifically harassment, stalking, impersonation, and sexting. Self-report surveys collected from a sample of 274 college students were examined using a negative binomial statistical analysis to determine possible relationships between risky online and offline lifestyles as well …

A New Presidential Genre: Analyzing The United Nations Addresses From Truman To Obama, Kory Hoyt May 2015

A New Presidential Genre: Analyzing The United Nations Addresses From Truman To Obama, Kory Hoyt

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This article explores American presidential rhetoric at the opening general assembly of the United Nations. An exploratory study was conducted by examining addresses made by all United States Presidents that spoke at the United Nations General Assembly (1946-2014). It is argued that this semi-annual speech, which has been made almost every year since the presidency of Harry Truman, can be considered a distinct presidential genre. Using a genre (generic) criticism as a framework it was found that these characteristics are consistent across the speeches of all of the Presidents. These are characteristics are: (1) international meditation on values, (2) assessing …

College Students And Time Use: Do Working And Nonworking Students Spend Their Time Differently?, Heidi D'Amato May 2015

College Students And Time Use: Do Working And Nonworking Students Spend Their Time Differently?, Heidi D'Amato

Honors Program Theses and Projects

With the necessity of having a college degree to participate in today’s society, there is increased pressure on young people to enroll in college and become fully functioning, independent members of society. The financial toll that college takes on students has created a need for students whose parents cannot pay their full tuition or have financial aid cover the costs to step up to fill the economic gap. This has created two distinct groups of college students—those who work and those who do not. By analyzing the time use activities of each group, this research shows that working students spend …

The Effect Of Stereoscopic (3d) Movies On Psychological And Physiological Experiences, Dawn M. Sarno May 2015

The Effect Of Stereoscopic (3d) Movies On Psychological And Physiological Experiences, Dawn M. Sarno

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Despite the recent rise in the popularity of 3D entertainment technology, there is surprisingly little research on the psychophysiological experience of watching 3D movies. Previous studies suggest that exposure to stereoscopic (3D) images in training environments (e.g., flight simulators) can cause discomforts including eyestrain and visually induced motion sickness. However, existing research on 3D entertainment has been mixed and has relied primarily on retrospective, non-experimental research designs, which do not allow us to draw clear causal conclusions. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychological and physiological effects of viewing 3D movies using a controlled, manipulated experiment. Eighty-two …

Analysis Of Political Language Manipulation: Changing Public Perceptions Of The Poor Through The War On Poverty And Popular Literary Fiction, Sarah Mcguire

Honors Program Theses and Projects

I propose to explore the rhetoric and language surrounding poor people of color both through common culture in literature and political speeches and documents of contemporary politicians between the years 1965 and 1992. I am particularly interested in the evolution of the Johnson administration’s War on Poverty between the 1970s and 1990s. Additionally, the Reagan administration’s tear down of the welfare system in the 1980s is another area of interest. I will specifically be examining how images of the poor have been manipulated in order to preserve the power of the elite and how portrayals of poverty shift in the …

Biases In Race And Social Desirability Within Jury Simulations, Michelle Hallaran May 2015

Biases In Race And Social Desirability Within Jury Simulations, Michelle Hallaran

Honors Program Theses and Projects

This study examined how the defendant’s race and the victim’s social desirability influence sentencing. Participants were randomly assigned to read one of four crime scenarios, featuring either a Black or White defendant or a socially desirable or undesirable victim. For each scenario the defendant’s race was manipulated and participants were shown a picture of either a Black or White male. Data were collected at two different time periods, because of potential influence of media coverage of racial bias in jury decisions. Therefore, the effects of defendant race, victim social desirability, and time period were tested through an experiment using a …
