Death, Sex, And Hope Through The Arts: Developing An Expressive Arts-Existential Therapy Method For The Treatment Of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder, Michael Shirek Apr 2024

Death, Sex, And Hope Through The Arts: Developing An Expressive Arts-Existential Therapy Method For The Treatment Of Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder, Michael Shirek

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) is a newly recognized disorder mired in a history of terminological and diagnostic controversy. Emerging research into the disorder has pointed to shame as an intrinsic motivator of the compulsive cycle, which provides potential for therapeutic intervention. Although most empirically-based treatments approach CSBD through a behavioral, abstinence-based model, an integrated expressive arts-existential therapy approach may provide opportunity for effective, person-centered treatment which mitigates the risk of reinforcing the shame cycle. For this capstone thesis, I developed and implemented a three-session treatment method which uses expressive arts therapy to investigate existential themes of guilt, non-being, isolation, …

La Pausa Sagrada: Embodiment Of Relational-Cultural Mindfulness- Development Of A Method, Annalise Reinhardt Kohlberger

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This paper addresses the history, theory, and practices in relational-cultural therapy (RCT), mindfulness, and phototherapy, the theoretical and philosophical foundations upon which I developed a method integrating related practices and approaches. The method combined relational cultural mindfulness, mindful photography, and phototherapy for promoting stress reduction and well-being in Mexican mothers of children with developmental disabilities. Research shows that parents of children with disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience even greater amounts of parental stress, due to the child behavior problems presented in children with ASD and the holistic impact they have on family life (Torbet et al., 2019). …

Magic At Work! Exploring How Expressive Arts Therapies Support Healing From Trauma And Adverse Childhood Experiences: Developing A Method For Adolescents, Kendra Grant

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This thesis investigated how expressive art therapy interventions based on imagination, creativity, and magical thinking can help facilitate adolescents' emotional development and healing. The study focused on how adolescents can grow and heal from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and/or trauma by revisiting imaginative play and creativity, where the impossible is possible and magic exists; a place where they can explore and play again through externalized methods. The use of imagination in the healing of adolescents was explored through the development of a two-phase intervention (a) creating their own mythical creature and (b) building a home for their mythical creature. There …

A Hybrid Unsupervised Clustering-Based Anomaly Detection Method, Guo Pu, Lijuan Wang, Jun Shen, Fang Dong Jan 2021

A Hybrid Unsupervised Clustering-Based Anomaly Detection Method, Guo Pu, Lijuan Wang, Jun Shen, Fang Dong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In recent years, machine learning-based cyber intrusion detection methods have gained increasing popularity. The number and complexity of new attacks continue to rise; therefore, effective and intelligent solutions are necessary. Unsupervised machine learning techniques are particularly appealing to intrusion detection systems since they can detect known and unknown types of attacks as well as zero-day attacks. In the current paper, we present an unsupervised anomaly detection method, which combines Sub-Space Clustering (SSC) and One Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) to detect attacks without any prior knowledge. The proposed approach is evaluated using the well-known NSL-KDD dataset. The experimental results demonstrate …

Ensemble Neural Network Method For Wind Speed Forecasting, Binbin Yong, Fei Qiao, Chen Wang, Jun Shen, Yongqiang Wei, Qingguo Zhou Jan 2019

Ensemble Neural Network Method For Wind Speed Forecasting, Binbin Yong, Fei Qiao, Chen Wang, Jun Shen, Yongqiang Wei, Qingguo Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Wind power generation has gradually developed into an important approach of energy supply. Meanwhile, due to the difficulty of electricity storage, wind power is greatly affected by the real-time wind speed in wind fields. Generally, wind speed has the characteristics of nonlinear, irregular, and non-stationary, which make accurate wind speed forecasting a difficult problem. Recent studies have shown that ensemble forecasting approaches combining different sub-models is an efficient way to solve the problem. Therefore, in this article, two single models are ensembled for wind speed forecasting. Meanwhile, four data pre-processing hybrid models are combined with the reliability weights. The proposed …

A Method Of Uncertainty Analysis For Whole-Life Embodied Carbon Emissions (Co2-E) Of Building Materials Of A Net-Zero Energy Building In Australia, Mehdi Robati, Daniel J. Daly, Georgios Kokogiannakis Jan 2019

A Method Of Uncertainty Analysis For Whole-Life Embodied Carbon Emissions (Co2-E) Of Building Materials Of A Net-Zero Energy Building In Australia, Mehdi Robati, Daniel J. Daly, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The construction of new buildings requires the use of a substantial amount of materials, which have an associated embodied energy for manufacturing, transport, construction and end-of-life disposal. A number of inventories have been developed to collate the typical embodied energy or carbon emissions associated with different building materials and activities, and these can be used to quantify the environmental impacts of different construction methods. However, uncertainty exists in the estimation of embodied CO2-e emissions and other environmental impact results, due to i) inconsistencies in typical embodied carbon emissions values in inventories; ii) errors in estimations of material quantities; iii) assumptions …

Which Source Possesses The Most And Highest Quality Data On The Empirical Aspects Of Criminal Events? A Theory Of Opportunity And Necessary Conditions, Scott Jacques Jan 2019

Which Source Possesses The Most And Highest Quality Data On The Empirical Aspects Of Criminal Events? A Theory Of Opportunity And Necessary Conditions, Scott Jacques

CJC Publications

Offenders and nonoffenders possess valuable information about crime. But which possesses the best data? This is a complex issue, so I narrow my focus to data on empirical aspects of criminal events. Drawing on the necessary conditions perspective, I theorize that a source’s possession 1) of data varies directly with its involvement in cases; 2) of representative data varies inversely with nonrandom involvement in cases and nonrandom siphoning off from the larger group to which it belongs; and, 3) of accurate data varies inversely with time since involvement in cases. Those general principles suggest that offenders, especially active ones, possess …

Late Paleoindian Land Tenure In Southwest Wyoming: Towards Integrating Method And Theory In An Analysis Of Taphochronometric Indicators Of Time-Averaged Deposits In The Wyoming Basin, Wyoming Usa, Cynthia D. Highland

Anthropology Department: Theses

According to Bailey (2008), substantive time perspectivism acknowledges that different types of phenomena operate over different time spans and resolutions as a matter of course while methodological time perspectivism concerns the notion that the nature of the data at our disposal, as well as the timescale of observation we choose to view it with, will affect the types of patterns that are possible to detect in the archaeological record. This thesis explores these ideas further. It is a pilot study of southwest Wyoming Late Paleoindian land tenure embedded within an extended critique of Wandsnider (2008). To Wandsnider’s original sample of …

Modeling Change Trajectories For Mental Health Symptoms And Functioning During Psychotherapy, Elizabeth Wynn May 2018

Modeling Change Trajectories For Mental Health Symptoms And Functioning During Psychotherapy, Elizabeth Wynn

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Psychological symptoms are routinely measured in clinic settings using self-report surveys to help researchers understand the nature of client progress. Past studies have generally used metrics that compare client scores at two time points (beginning and end of treatment) to classify progress by whether there has been significant improvement or deterioration in their symptom levels. However, contemporary practice often uses more frequent (e.g., weekly) assessment. Thus, methodologies incorporating data from every assessment, such as multilevel modeling, are used to provide more nuanced information about change trajectories. Though there is research on the uses of both methodological frameworks, little research has …

Human Action Segmentation Based On A Streaming Uniform Entropy Slice Method, Cheng Peng, Sio-Long Lo, Jie Huang, Ah Chung Tsoi Jan 2018

Human Action Segmentation Based On A Streaming Uniform Entropy Slice Method, Cheng Peng, Sio-Long Lo, Jie Huang, Ah Chung Tsoi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Segmentation of human actions is a major research problem in video understanding. A number of existing approaches demonstrate that performing action segmentation before action recognition results in better recognition performance. In this paper, we address the problem of action segmentation in an online manner. We first extend the clustering-based image segmentation approach into a temporal one, where hierarchical supervoxel levels for action segmentation are generated accordingly. We then propose a streaming approach to flatten the hierarchical levels into one based on Uniform Entropy Slice (UES), in order to preserve important information in the video. The flattened level contains the silhouette …

The Method Of Educational Assessment Affects Children's Neural Processing And Performance: Behavioural And Fmri Evidence, Steven J. Howard, H Burianova, Alysha Calleia, Samuel Fynes-Clinton, Lisa K. Kervin, Sahar Bokosmaty

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Standardised educational assessments are now widespread, yet their development has given comparatively more consideration to what to assess than how to optimally assess students' competencies. Existing evidence from behavioural studies with children and neuroscience studies with adults suggest that the method of assessment may affect neural processing and performance, but current evidence remains limited. To investigate the impact of assessment methods on neural processing and performance in young children, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify and quantify the neural correlates during performance across a range of current approaches to standardised spelling assessment. Results indicated that children's test performance …

An Elasto-Plastic Method For Analysing The Deformation Of The Railway Ballast, Qideng Sun, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Nimbalkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this study, a series of monotonically drained triaxial tests were conducted using the large-scale cylindrical triaxial apparatus. The effect of particle breakage and confining pressure on the mechanical behaviour of ballast were investigated. Based on the experimental findings, mathematical expressions for critical state stress ratio and specific volume are proposed to incorporate the evolution of particle breakage during monotonic shearing. An elasto-plastic constitutive model is formulated within the critical state soil mechanics framework in order to capture the stress-strain behaviour and degradation of ballast. The non-linear variation of shear strength envelope at a given range of confining pressures is …
