A Scale For Assessing Hearing Adults’ Beliefs About The Capabilities Of Deaf Adults, Paul James Berkay, Emmett J. Gardner, Patricia J. Smith
A Scale For Assessing Hearing Adults’ Beliefs About The Capabilities Of Deaf Adults, Paul James Berkay, Emmett J. Gardner, Patricia J. Smith
JADARA
This paper describes the Opinions About Deaf People (ODP) Scale, a scale for assessing hearing adults' beliefs about the capabilities of deaf adults. It addresses a specific gap in instrumentation, as previous instruments assessing attitudes about deaf persons were not specifically developed to assess this domain. They were adapted from instruments designed to measure attitudes toward other disabilities or general attitudes toward disabilities. The scale addresses a variety of commonly held misconceptions about deaf people. These misconceptions were identified from literature review and interviews with deaf professionals. This paper includes a copy of the GDP scale and administration and scoring …
Applications Of Gestalt Therapy In Deafness Rehabilitation Counseling, David B. Peterson, Debra L. Gough
Applications Of Gestalt Therapy In Deafness Rehabilitation Counseling, David B. Peterson, Debra L. Gough
JADARA
Techniques used in Gestalt therapy can be applied to working with clients who are deaf in a rehabilitation counseling setting. Gestalt therapy focuses on the whole person, encouraging the assessment of both assets and liabilities. Such a focus avoids the emphasis of disability exclusively. This approach teaches awareness, utilizing the client-therapist relationship and dialogue as tools in the counseling process. The importance of dialogue in the process is emphasized to maximize client involvement. The theory is phenomenological and emphasizes individuality, a focus that discourages the drawing of stereotypes regarding people who are deaf. Acknowledged is the need for individual consideration …
The Development Of A Communication Assessment Paradigm For Use With Traditionally Underserved Deaf Adults, Greg Long, Robin Alvares
The Development Of A Communication Assessment Paradigm For Use With Traditionally Underserved Deaf Adults, Greg Long, Robin Alvares
JADARA
Within the congenitally deaf population there exists a sizeable number of individuals who are considered to be traditionally underserved. These individuals are characterized by severe communication deficits irrespective of modality (e.g., speech, sign language, reading, writing). Unfortunately, there are few evaluators, and fewer assessment protocols, available to assess the communication skills of this population. Addressing this issue, this paper will describe this population, discuss limitations associated with current communication assessment strategies, and subsequently provide a model to structure communication assessment built upon a functionally based, ecological perspective.

Job Coaching: A Means To Reduce Unemployment And Underemployment In The Deaf Community, Pamela J. Belknap, Kimberly A. Korwin, Nancy M. Long
Job Coaching: A Means To Reduce Unemployment And Underemployment In The Deaf Community, Pamela J. Belknap, Kimberly A. Korwin, Nancy M. Long
JADARA
Historically, vocational rehabilitation approaches to assisting deaf people to succeed in employment have been lacking. This contributes to unemployment and underemployment among the deaf community. This article discusses barriers to employment experienced by deaf people, the traditional role of vocational rehabilitation services, and service gaps related to job retention and advancement. A model for the provision of job coach services is provided that calls for the coach to be a member of a team providing routine ongoing services. Current and future efforts to develop coach training opportunities are described as well.
Assessing The Need For A Job Coaching Curriculum In The Baltimore-Washington Area, Peggy Muth
Assessing The Need For A Job Coaching Curriculum In The Baltimore-Washington Area, Peggy Muth
JADARA
The trend to move consumers from sheltered workshop settings into community employment has created new career paths for rehabilitation professionals. One of these career paths is that of a Job Coach. Currently, in the Baltimore-Washington area, there are no formal programs preparing college students to enter this emerging profession. A survey was conducted in the Baltimore-Washington area, and a subsequent review of the literature was performed to determine if there was a need for a college level curriculum to prepare individuals to become Job Coaches to work with consumers who are deaf. The results of the survey and review of …
Attention Advisors And Mentors: A Suggested Study Technique For Deaf College Students, Robert B. Gonzales
Attention Advisors And Mentors: A Suggested Study Technique For Deaf College Students, Robert B. Gonzales
JADARA
Deaf college students can develop a programmed study method that has been used successfully with college students for over twenty-five years. This study method will improve students grades if they will dedicate themselves to this technique rather than waiting until the lastminute to cram. Deaf students can continually review the knowledge base of lecture and textbook information by studying independently and especially by using an instructor or peer mentor. Students need to establish appropriate time management for studying and writing term papers. Deaf students must develop assertiveness in the college classroom when the lecture presentations are not clear. Successful deaf …
