This inquiry was a completed as part of the requirements for earning a master of the arts degree in Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation for the student William Clifton at SIT Graduate Institute. It was an independent practitioner inquiry based on the methodology of Grounded Theory that utilized qualitative research by way of in depth interviews and a focus group to understand how the identity shaped the experience of Sudanese migrants living in Jordan. Due to the many difficulties in accurately determining the location of legacy minefields, demining personnel need traditional and sometimes improvised methods for locating and verifying contamination. With a unique combination of terrain, vegetation, water resources and soil types, the Jordan Valley requires specialized minefield survey and clearance methods to avoid harming the environment.

Aisha, a Syrian native, lived in Latakia with her Palestinian husband and six children. Their children were not allowed to attend school because of their Palestinian heritage. In the past, refugee status was considered a short-term consequence of conflict. Today, protracted refugee situations (PRS) are the norm rather than the exception. This shift has forced humanitarian actors to develop new strategies to handle the challenges of working with refugees in the long-term. This project discusses the effects of Syrian refugees on the economy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It aims at determining whether Syrian refugees have had an effect on GDP, unemployment levels, and price indexes (inflation). It also investigates whether they have had costs and benefits on Jordan and whether the benefits have outweighed the costs. It shows that Syrian refugees have had mixed effects on GDP, unemployment, and inflation, and that they have been mainly benefit to Jordan’s economy.
