Continuous Versus Discrete Market Games, Alexandre Marino, Bernard De Meyer Sep 2005

Continuous Versus Discrete Market Games, Alexandre Marino, Bernard De Meyer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

De Meyer and Moussa Saley [4] provide an endogenous justification for the appearance of Brownian Motion in Finance by modeling the strategic interaction between two asymmetrically informed market makers with a zero-sum repeated game with one-sided information. The crucial point of this justification is the appearance of the normal distribution in the asymptotic behavior of V n ( P )// n . In De Meyer and Moussa Saley’s model [4], agents can fix a price in a continuous space. In the real world however, the market compels the agents to post prices in a discrete set. The previous remark raises …

Testing For Non-Nested Conditional Moment Restrictions Via Conditional Empirical Likelihood, Taisuke Otsu, Yoon-Jae Whang Sep 2005

Testing For Non-Nested Conditional Moment Restrictions Via Conditional Empirical Likelihood, Taisuke Otsu, Yoon-Jae Whang

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We propose non-nested tests for competing conditional moment restriction models using a method of empirical likelihood. Our tests are based on the method of conditional empirical likelihood developed by Kitamura, Tripathi and Ahn (2004) and Zhang and Gijbels (2003). By using the conditional implied probabilities, we develop three non-nested tests: the moment encompassing, Cox-type, and efficient score encompassing tests. Compared to the existing non-nested tests which mainly focus on testing unconditional moment restrictions, our approach directly tests conditional moment restrictions which imply the infinite number of unconditional moment restrictions. We derive the null distributions and power properties of the proposed …

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Equitable Treatment In The Masculinized Prison Environment, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong, John R. Hepburn Sep 2005

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Equitable Treatment In The Masculinized Prison Environment, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong, John R. Hepburn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research suggests that employee perceptions of an organization’s support for policies that promote an equitable work environment may differ significantly by race and gender groups. This study examines such perceptual differences and their attitudinal effects on employee experiences within the unique context of a prison setting. Significant differences in correctional officer perceptions of policies are found to exist by race and gender groups. Contrary to expectations, all race and gender groups perceive strong organizational support for equal treatment policies. Moreover, the work experiences of White males are not negatively affected by perceptions of organizational support for equal treatment as had …

Ga-Facilitated Knn Classifier Optimization With Varying Similarity Measures, Michael R. Peterson, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer Sep 2005

Ga-Facilitated Knn Classifier Optimization With Varying Similarity Measures, Michael R. Peterson, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer

Kno.e.sis Publications

Genetic algorithms are powerful tools for k-nearest neighbors classifier optimization. While traditional knn classification techniques typically employ Euclidian distance to assess pattern similarity, other measures may also be utilized. Previous research demonstrates that GAs can improve predictive accuracy by searching for optimal feature weights and offsets for a cosine similarity-based knn classifier. GA-selected weights determine the classification relevance of each feature, while offsets provide alternative points of reference when assessing angular similarity. Such optimized classifiers perform competitively with other contemporary classification techniques. This paper explores the effectiveness of GA weight and offset optimization for knowledge discovery using knn classifiers with …

Overexposed: Issues Of Public Gender Imaging, Pamela K. Morris Sep 2005

Overexposed: Issues Of Public Gender Imaging, Pamela K. Morris

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

Make no mistake—it is popularity that makes pop culture important. And it is the powerful visual imagery of advertisements that helps define the largely artificial construction we call gender. Sex-role stereotyping and gender representations are typically studied in content analyses of television and magazine advertisements. Less common are investigations into outdoor advertising, a medium that is ubiquitous and the most democratic—everyone has equal access to visuals. This essay calls attention to and offers insights on advertisements in our outdoor visual space, focusing on gender representations. Capturing and analyzing these ephemeral images can show how they influence how we feel, think, …

Managing Newsroomcan Be A Piece Of Cake, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

You may never desire to be a manager, but you still have to manage. Your perspective changes depending on where you sit in the organizational chart. If you're in the lower part of the organizational chart, you may think you have to manage only yourself. If you're in the middle of the chart, you know the tug of war of managing down, across and up. If you're at the top, you know the challenge of managing down.
In truth, wherever you are in the chart, managing yourself, peers and the boss is required.

The Quest For Body And Voice In Assia Djebar's So Vast The Prison, Susannah Rodríguez Drissi Sep 2005

The Quest For Body And Voice In Assia Djebar's So Vast The Prison, Susannah Rodríguez Drissi

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Using Northrop Frye's definition of the quest novel and Joseph Campbell's writings, Susannah Rodríguez Drissi explores in her paper, "The Quest for Body and Voice in Assia Djebar's So Vast the Prison," the motif of the journey as Djebar adapts it to her female characters. Rodríguez Drissi proposes that in previous studies concerning the hero -- such as in James Frazer's The Golden Bough or in Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces -- women are relegated to a secondary role. Recently, however, it has become evident that the study of the woman as "heroine" is necessary to a …

Hybridity And Whiteness In Claudine C. O'Hearn's Half And Half: Writings On Growing Up Biracial And Bicultural, Heather Latimer Sep 2005

Hybridity And Whiteness In Claudine C. O'Hearn's Half And Half: Writings On Growing Up Biracial And Bicultural, Heather Latimer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Hybridity and Whiteness in Claudine C. O'Hearn's Half and Half: Writings on Growing up Biracial and Bicultural," Heather Latimer examines the autobiographical collection Half and Half: Writings on Growing up Biracial and Bicultural assembled and edited by Claudine C. O'Hearn. Latimer's analysis reveals how current models of hybridity theory are performed, articulated, and exemplified in the texts of O'Hearn's volume. In her analysis, Latimer explores the anxiety and tension about whiteness within hybridity theory, often reflected in the performance of hybrid aesthetics. Latimer argues that while some authors in Half and Half avoid talking about whiteness as …

Anita Desai's Fasting, Feasting And The Condition Of Women, Ludmila Volná Sep 2005

Anita Desai's Fasting, Feasting And The Condition Of Women, Ludmila Volná

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Anita Desai's Fasting, Feasting and the Condition of Women" Ludmila Volná presents a critical culture-based reading of Desai's novel Fasting, Feasting, a work that deals with the condition of women (not only) in India. Volná analyzes both female and the male sensitivities in the novel where Desai makes use of a double symbolic of food expressed throughout the novel by (not only literal) hunger. In Volná's view, Desai's Hindu imagery of sun/fire as patriarchal power and water, which, as the counterpart of the sun and fire, represents recognition of women’s condition and a possible way to …

Watsuji And Deleuze And Guattari In The Climate Of Culture, Seth Jacobowitz Sep 2005

Watsuji And Deleuze And Guattari In The Climate Of Culture, Seth Jacobowitz

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Seth Jacobowitz, in his paper "Watsuji and Deleuze and Guattari in the Climate of Culture," analyzes theories of cultural properties in Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus alongside Watsuji Tetsuro's prewar Climate and Culture. At stake in these investigations is the status of the West as a universalizing particular ratified by these authors in the instance of its own critique. We are confronted on the one hand with Deleuze and Guattari's exoticized, Orientalist promise of an alternative economy of meaning derived from the Balinese term for "plateau" and the morphology of the rhizome and, on the other hand, …

The Problematics Of A Social Constructivist Approach To Science, Bryce Christensen Sep 2005

The Problematics Of A Social Constructivist Approach To Science, Bryce Christensen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "The Problematics of a Social Constructivist Approach to Science," Bryce Christensen takes John Gray's hope that science can serve as a remedy for anthropocentrism as an entry point for discussing the debate between scientific realists and social constructivists. Christensen examines the way science appears to buttress the realist position when it confronts humans with truths that contradict their expectations and desires. In his discussion, Christensen also surveys the ways that science fits within social constructivist theory when it serves identifiable social needs or advances identifiable group interests. Further, Christensen identifies eschatological cosmology as an extreme test case …

Globalization, Ideology, And Narratives Of The East Asian Financial Crisis, Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee Sep 2005

Globalization, Ideology, And Narratives Of The East Asian Financial Crisis, Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Globalization, Ideology, and Narratives of the East Asian Financial Crisis," Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee analyzes the narratives of the East Asian financial "crisis" in 1997-98, arguing that it took place in the course of restructuring the world economy so that the first world would keep its hegemonic power. The East Asian financial crisis spread rapidly to the rest of the globe and in this urgent situation, the IMF: International Monetary Fund played its now typical role as a "savior of the world." Before the financial crisis, the East Asian economy was considered to be an exemplary model from …
