A Developmental Approach To Teaching Internet Marketing, Rohan Miller, Ray Stace, Gwyneth Howell
A Developmental Approach To Teaching Internet Marketing, Rohan Miller, Ray Stace, Gwyneth Howell
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
Just as buying and selling over the Internet represents a new frontier for commerce, teaching students how to best use the Internet in marketing presents educators with new challenges and new opportunities. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of Internet commerce that must be confronted by educators is the general absence of inter-personal communication in customer exchanges. As most Internet marketing takes place using a self-service technology (SST) that enables customers to consume products independent of direct service employee involvement (Meuter, Ostrom, Roundtree and Bitner 2000), it seems inappropriate to teach marketing in an Internet environment by relying on traditional lecture-tutorial …

The Local Nature Of Digital Reference, Teresa U. Berry, Margaret M. Casado, Lana Dixon
The Southeastern Librarian
In response to the extensive availability of digital library resources and the rising number of remote users, many libraries now offer digital reference services through e-mail and chat. The growing use of interactive chat software with its real time interactive capability has prompted librarians to consider collaborative ways in which to offer this service. A concern expressed frequently in informal discussions of such collaborations is how difficult it would be for the staff at one library to answer questions for another, considering that many questions tend to be “local”. Intrigued by the perception of “local,” librarians at the University of …

Environmental Justice And Information Technologies: Overcoming The Information Access Paradox In Urban Communities, Wendy A. Kellogg, Anjali Mathur
Environmental Justice And Information Technologies: Overcoming The Information Access Paradox In Urban Communities, Wendy A. Kellogg, Anjali Mathur
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Scientific studies and resident testimony suggest that urban residents in low-income and minority communities have been subject to an unequal burden of environmental pollution and inequitable environmental enforcement practices. A key component of the equitable development and implementation of environmental policies is the participation of citizens and community-based organizations in the policy process. Such participation rests upon equitable access to agency-generated environmental information and effective use of that information by citizens. This article focuses on the adoption of Internet technologies by environmental agencies as a mechanism for disseminating information and the implications for low-income and minority residents in urban communities. …
Depictions Of Ethnicity And Gender On The Front Pages Of College And University Websites., Mackenzie Blair Frazier
Depictions Of Ethnicity And Gender On The Front Pages Of College And University Websites., Mackenzie Blair Frazier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined how women and men and people of different ethnicity are represented in the photographs found on the front screens of websites of colleges and universities offering four-year degrees and above in the United States. A content analysis analyzed 1,677 images of men and women found on the front pages of 412 colleges and university websites. A six-point Body Index Scale coding instrument was used to determine if emphasis was placed on the face or the body of the human image, determined through an analysis of where the images were cropped.
Frequencies of men and women were moderately …

Utilitarian And Hedonic Value Across Fulfillment-Product Categories Of Internet Shopping, Julie E. Francis, Lesley White
Utilitarian And Hedonic Value Across Fulfillment-Product Categories Of Internet Shopping, Julie E. Francis, Lesley White
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Extant Internet shopping literature identifies potential sources, and inhibitors, of utilitarian and hedonic value for consumers. However, Internet shopping is oftentimes treated as a relatively homogenous activity or the insights are accompanied by inexact qualifications such as 'in some situations' or 'for some types of products'. The present study enhances these insights in two ways. Firstly, the authors developed a Fulfillment-Product classification scheme that segments Internet shopping situations on the basis of shared marketing-relevant characteristics. Secondly, the study provides a more detailed analysis than has to date been performed by examining the sources and inhibitors of utilitarian and hedonic value …
The Use Of The Internet In The Personal Sales Function For Building Materials B2b Firms: Adding Value With Technology, Robert G. Grant
The Use Of The Internet In The Personal Sales Function For Building Materials B2b Firms: Adding Value With Technology, Robert G. Grant
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This paper seeks to explore the potential of the internet for adding value to members of a highly standardised and largely commodity priced industry. The focus is on the largely interpersonal area of personal sales to give an understanding of the need to look at processes underlying functions to get an appropriate evaluation of the potential benefits derived from the use of such technology. Beyond this, the paper deals with the analysis required to evaluate the potential impact of the adoption of technology based systems by such organisations to illustrate the complexity involved in such adoption. There are conclusions which …

Many genes can play a role in multiple biological processes or molecular functions. Identifying multifunctional genes at the genome-wide level and studying their properties can shed light upon the complexity of molecular events that underpin cellular functioning, thereby leading to a better understanding of the functional landscape of the cell. However, to date, genome-wide analysis of multifunctional genes (and the proteins they encode) has been limited. Here we introduce a computational approach that uses known functional annotations to extract genes playing a role in at least two distinct biological processes. We leverage functional genomics data sets for three organisms—H. sapiens, …
United States Diplomacy In The Age Of The Internet, Allison S. Greene
United States Diplomacy In The Age Of The Internet, Allison S. Greene
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The dynamics of international relations are constantly changing, and the origin of an extraordinary amount of that change can be traced to what has been coined the ‘Information Revolution.’ It is a revolution as profound and as significant as Gutenberg's invention of moveable metal type, and may result in social and political consequences of comparable magnitude. One of the most significant and far-reaching implications of this phenomenon is the emergence of the Internet. Since its inception, there have been many claims and assertions about existing and potential repercussions of the Internet within the diplomatic realm.
The purpose of this work …
Mediators Of Weight Loss In An Internet-Based Intervention For African American Adolescent Girls, Marney A. White
Mediators Of Weight Loss In An Internet-Based Intervention For African American Adolescent Girls, Marney A. White
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary aim of this study was to assess the process variables involved in a weight loss program for African-American adolescent girls. This internet-based intervention compared a behavioral treatment program to an educational treatment program; it was hypothesized that participants randomized to the behavioral condition would lose more weight at 6 months than those in the educational condition. Several process variables have been identified as affecting success in in vivo weight loss programs for adults and children, including program adherence, self-efficacy, and social support. The current study sought to broaden the understanding of these process variables as they pertain to …

The Internet is full of reliable sources that are filled with a wealth of business information. Some of these sites are fee-based with subscription prices that are much lower than those of the large commercial databases. Unfortunately, only a single subscriber may use most of those fee-based sites. That means the librarian must turn to sites that are free to the general public. Many of these free sites rival fee-based services for quality and quantity of information.

The technological innovations and unregulated use of the Internet have created a global medium for men’s sexual exploitation and abuse of women and children. The sex industry has aggressively adopted every new information technology to increase men’s sexual access to women and children. A mutually beneficial relationship exists between the Internet and sex industries. New technologies enable pimps to market women and children in prostitution or related activities, such as online strip shows, sex shows, and commercial voyeurism. The global communications forums have increased the visibility and exposure of women and children being exploited and abused, while conversely, increasing the …
