A Multivariate Test Of Evolutionary Stasis In Homo Sapiens, Jon Geoffrey Kleckner Jan 1989

A Multivariate Test Of Evolutionary Stasis In Homo Sapiens, Jon Geoffrey Kleckner

Dissertations and Theses

In the past, efforts to prove or disprove stasis in hominids have relied upon univariate tests such as Students's t-test. Severe methodological and interpretive problems arise from the misapplication of univariate statistics to questions concerning variation in shape through time. These are questions best addressed using the multivariate approach of morphometrics. Eighteen cranial dimensions drawn from 33 mid and late Pleistocene Homo sapiens were examined using principal component analysis (PCA). PCA divided the sample into two distinct morphologies. Archaic Homo sapiens of the mid Pleistocene clustered with Wurm I neanderthals and apart from post Gottweig early anatomically modern Homo sapiens. …

Evolution In Thermodynamic Perspective: An Ecological Approach, Bruce H. Weber, David J. Depew, C Dyke, Stanley N. Salthe, Eric D. Schneider, Jeffrey S. Wicken, Robert E. Ulanowicz Dec 1988

Evolution In Thermodynamic Perspective: An Ecological Approach, Bruce H. Weber, David J. Depew, C Dyke, Stanley N. Salthe, Eric D. Schneider, Jeffrey S. Wicken, Robert E. Ulanowicz

David J Depew

Recognition that biological systems are stabilized far from equilibrium by self-organizing, informed, autocatalytic cycles and structures that dissipate unusable energy and matter has led to recent attempts to reformulate evolutionary theory. We hold that such insights are consistent with the broad development of the Darwinian Tradition and with the concept of natural selection. Biological systems are selected that re not only more efficient than competitors but also enhance the integrity of the web of energetic relations in which they are embedded. But the expansion of the informational phase space, upon which selection acts, is also guaranteed by the properties of …

Plan Distrito Metropolitano. Quito Actual Fase 1. Proceso Urbano, Fernando Carrión Mena Dec 1988

Plan Distrito Metropolitano. Quito Actual Fase 1.

Breadth-Depth Or State-Trait Curiosity? A Factor Analysis Of State-Trait Curiosity And State Anxiety Scales, Gregory J. Boyle Dec 1988

Breadth-Depth Or State-Trait Curiosity? A Factor Analysis Of State-Trait Curiosity And State Anxiety Scales, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

Research into state-trait curiosity and anxiety has resulted in a simplication of the constructs involved, particularly in the curiosity domain. This field of research previously has been dominated by a wide variety of interpretations such as specific vs diversive curiosity, perceptual vs epistemic curiosity, and breadth vs depth curiosity. It has been shown however, that these particular interpretations of the curiosity construct can be encompassed more satisfactorily within a global state-trait model, thereby avoiding much of the confusion which has plagued curiosity research to-date. In order to provide support for the state-trait curiosity model, the present paper examines the factor …

Notes On Displaced Ces Functional Forms, Don Fullerton

Don Fullerton

This document shows how to add another parameter to a Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) utility function, derive demand functions, and solve for indirect utility and expenditure functions for the evaluation of money metric utility welfare changes from a price or tax change. It also shows how to calibrate the model, by solving backwards for the parameters that must have existed to generate the observed data.

Mood Induction, Interpersonal Perceptions, And Behavioral Rejection In Students With Depressed, Non-Depressed Disturbed, And Normal Roommates, Charles A. Sanislow, David V. Perkins, Deborah Ware Balogh Dec 1988

Mood Induction, Interpersonal Perceptions, And Behavioral Rejection In Students With Depressed, Non-Depressed Disturbed, And Normal Roommates, Charles A. Sanislow, David V. Perkins, Deborah Ware Balogh

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

The present study used the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) to select, based on multidimensional criteria, 51 college students who displayed depression alone, depression in conjunction with other psychological disturbance (PD), nondepressive PD, or no PD. All students had been living with randomly assigned roommates (RMs) for at least 10 wks. RMs of these students completed the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List, the Profile of Mood States, MMPI-168 Depression scale items, and items concerning roommate behavior. RMs of students depressed in conjunction with other PD were significantly more depressed themselves on 2 measures than were RMs of students in the …

Nonrandom Mixing Models Of Hiv Transmission, Peter Cramton, Edward H. Kaplan, A. David Paltiel Dec 1988

Nonrandom Mixing Models Of Hiv Transmission, Peter Cramton, Edward H. Kaplan, A. David Paltiel

Peter Cramton

Models of HIV transmission and the AIDS epidemic generally assume random mixing among those infected with HIV and those who are not. For sexually transmitted HIV, this implies that individuals select sex partners without regard to attributes such as familiarity, attractiveness, or risk of infection. This paper formulates a model for examining the impact of nonrandom mixing on HIV transmission. We present threshold conditions that determine when HIV epidemics can occur within the framework of this model. Nonrandom mixing is introduced by assuming that sexually active individuals select sex partners to minimize the risk of infection. In addition to variability …

Are Constitutional Cases Political?, Brian Slattery Dec 1988

Are Constitutional Cases Political?, Brian Slattery

Brian Slattery

To argue that constitutional adjudication is political does not carry us very far unless we go on to specify what the pursuit of politics entails, the goals it seeks to attain, and the basic principles informing its practice. The word political has no clearly defined meaning in modern usage. Rather, it has the chameleon-like capacity to change colours so as to blend with a variety of different conceptual backgrounds. Of course, if we adopt an Aristotelian notion of politics as the pursuit of the common good of a community and the individual goods of its members, we can agree that …
